Kerala bishops fight state's liquor policy

The apex body of the Catholic hierarchy in the state said in a circular that the government should prove its sincerity in forming a people-friendly policy.

Kochi:  The Kerala Catholic Bishops’ Council (KCBC) has demanded an action plan to make the sate liquor free in next 10 years saying the current policy is not aimed at people’s welfare.

The apex body of the Catholic hierarchy in the state said in a circular that the government should prove its sincerity in forming a people-friendly policy.

The circular issued by Bishop Remigius Inchinaniyil, chairman of KCBC’s anti-liquor committee, was read out in Catholic churches during the Sunday Mass.

The day was observed as anti-liquor Sunday by the Catholic church. The bishops alleged the government had failed to present the goal of achieving a liquor-free state over 10 years in a meaningful manner.

The circular said unless the government came out with a blueprint for action in this regard, its moves could be viewed only with suspicion it said.
