வத்திக்கான் பணியாளர்களின் குழந்தைகளுக்கான 2023-ஆம் ஆண்டு கோடைகால பயிற்சி முகாமில் பங்கேற்ற 5 முதல் 13 வயது வரையிலான ஏறத்தாழ 250 குழந்தைகளைச் சந்தித்த திருத்தந்தை பிரான்சிஸ் அவர்கள், அவர்களுக்கும் அவர்களை வழிநடத்துவோருக்கும் ஊக்கமளிக்கும் வார்த்தைகளை வழங்கினார்.

எங்களின் கதாநாயர்களாக விளங்கும் பெற்றோருக்கு நாங்கள் எம்மாதிரியான செய்தியை வழங்க வேண்டும் என்று Edoardo என்ற குழந்தை எழுப்பிய கேள்விக்குப் பதிலளித்த திருத்தந்தை, அவர்தம் பெற்றோரின் வளர்ப்புக்காகவும் அர்பணிப்புக்காகவும் அடிக்கடி அவர்களுக்கு நன்றி தெரிவிக்குமாறு அவர்களைக் கேட்டுக்கொண்டார்.

உங்களின் கதாநாயகர்கள் யார் என்று Elena என்று இளம்பெண் கேட்ட கேள்விக்கு, தனது தாத்தா பாட்டிதான் என்று அப்பெண்ணுக்குப் பதிலளித்த திருத்தந்தை பிரான்சிஸ் அவர்கள், ஞானம் நிறைந்த அவர்களுடன் உரையாடுவது அவசியம் என்றும் எடுத்துரைத்தார்.

இன்றைய டிஜிட்டல் உலகில் நாம் எப்படி கதாநாயகர்களாக விளங்க முடியும் என்று Raphael என்ற இளைஞன் எழுப்பிய கேள்விக்கு, இந்த விடயத்தில் நாம் நேர்மறையான கண்ணோட்டத்துடன் செயல்படவேண்டும் என்றும், அதேவேளையில், இதில் நாம் தவறாகக் கையாளப்படுவதைத் தவிர்க்க வேண்டும் என்றும் வேண்டுகோள் விடுத்தார் திருத்தந்தை.

இறுதியாக, இயேசு படிப்பித்த செபத்தை அவர்களுடன் இணைந்து செபித்தபின் அவர்களுக்குத் தனது அப்போஸ்தலிக்க ஆசீரை வழங்கிய திருத்தந்தை, ஒருவர் ஒருவருக்காக செபிப்பதை எப்போதும் நினைவில் வைத்துக் கொண்டு, அதைத் தங்கள் பெற்றோர், தாத்தா, பாட்டி மற்றும் நண்பர்களிடம் எடுத்துச் செல்லுமாறும் கேட்டுக் கொண்டார்.

இந்த இளம் குழந்தைகளில் சிலர் வரும் ஆகஸ்ட் மாதம் 1 முதல் 6 வரை போர்த்துக்கல்லின் லிஸ்பனில் நிகழவிருக்கும் உலக இளையோர் மாநாட்டில் கலந்துகொள்ள உள்ளனர்.

ஜூலை 18, செவ்வாய்க்கிழமை காலை, பெங்களூரு மருத்துவமனையில் புற்றுநோய்க்காக அனுமதிக்கப்பட்டிருந்த ஓமன் சாண்டி அவர்கள் மரணமடைந்த நிலையில், அவரது இழப்பினால் வருந்தும் குடும்பத்தார்க்கு ஆறுதல் செய்தி ஒன்றினை அனுப்பியுள்ளார் கர்தினால் ஆலஞ்சேரி.

80 வயதான ஓமன் சாண்டி அவர்கள் இருமுறை கேரளா மாநிலத்தின் முதலமைச்சராக  தேர்ந்தெடுக்கப்பட்டு சிறப்புடன் ஆட்சி செலுத்தியவர் என்றும், 50 ஆண்டுகள் சட்டமன்ற உறுப்பினராகவும், இரண்டு முறை முதலமைச்சராகவும் பணியாற்றி, மாநில மக்களின் இதயங்களில் ஆழமான தாக்கத்தை ஏற்படுத்தியவர் என்றும் குறிப்பிட்டுள்ளார் கர்தினால் ஆலஞ்சேரி.

தனது ஆழ்ந்த கடவுள் நம்பிக்கையின் அடிப்படையில் வாழ்க்கையில் ஒவ்வொரு நெருக்கடிக்கும் தீர்வுகாண பாடுபட்டவர் என்றும், தீர்க்க முடியாத பிரச்சனைகளில் அவற்றை கடவுளின் விருப்பத்திற்குக் கையளித்து வாழ்ந்தவர் என்றும் கூறினார் கர்தினால் ஆலஞ்சேரி.

கேரள மக்களை  அதிகமாக நேசித்தவர், மக்களால் அதிகமாக நேசிக்கப்பட்டவர் ஓமன் சாண்டி என்று தனது இரங்கல் செய்தியில் தெரிவித்துள்ள கர்தினால் ஆலஞ்சேரி அவர்கள், அரசியல் ஆர்வலர்கள் மத்தியில் ஆசிரியராகவும், ஆளும்கட்சி, எதிர்க்கட்சி என்ற பேதமின்றி அனைவரிடமும் மரியாதையுடன் நடப்பவராகவும், அரசியல் நடவடிக்கைகளுக்கு ஒத்துழைக்கக் கூடியவராகவும் திகழ்ந்தவர் என்றும் எடுத்துரைத்துள்ளார்.

இந்திய பிரதமர் நரேந்திர மோடி, காங்கிரஸ் தலைவர் மல்லிகார்ஜுன் கார்கே, சமாஜ்வாதி கட்சி தலைவர் அகிலேஷ் யாதவ், இந்திய யூனியன் முஸ்லிம் லீக் தலைவர் இ.டி.முஹம்மது பஷீர் ஆகியோர் உட்பட பலர், ஓமன் சாண்டி அவர்களின் மறைவிற்கு இரங்கல் தெரிவித்து வருகின்றனர்.

மேலும், முன்னாள் முதல்வரின் மறைவிற்கு இரங்கல் தெரிவிக்கும் வகையில் ஜூலை 18, 19 ஆகிய இரு நாட்களை கேரள அரசு, விடுமுறையாக அறிவித்துள்ளது.

 

Pope upholds Brazilian BECs' commitment to promote an outgoing Church

Pope Francis sends a message of encouragement to a Basic Ecclesial Communities (BECs) meeting in Brazil, emphasizing that the Church must never remain “hidden”.

Pope Francis has encouraged Brazilian Basic Ecclesial Communities (BECs) to continue working for an "outgoing" Church, saying that a Church that goes out to the world is stronger.

He gave this encouragement as the group opened their 15th Inter-ecclesial Meeting, which kicked off on 18 July in Rondonópolis, in the Brazilian State of Mato Grosso, on the theme “Basic Ecclesial Communities: an outgoing Church pursuing the full life for all men and women”.

The event gathers about 1,500 participants from across Brazil to discuss the current social and economic challenges facing the country, including the negative impact on local communities and the environment of indiscriminate mining activities, and the ongoing commitment of Basic Ecclesial Communities to transform and update the Church’s mission in rural areas, urban centres and peripheries.

Participants include representatives of the regional BECs, of indigenous peoples, and of Quilombo communities (descendants of Afro-Brazilian slaves who escaped from slave plantations – ed.), leaders of social organizations linked to the Church, social activists, religious men and women, priests and 63 bishops, as well as guests from other Christian Churches.

Discussions, running until 22 July, are focused on five thematic areas including: Synodality and Power in the Church; the Political and Social Dimension; the Economy of Francesco; Integral Ecology and Education.

Going out in the world makes the Church stronger

In a short video message, Pope Francis said he wished to convey his closeness to all participants, and asked the Brazilian Basic Ecclesial Communities to continue their precious work in line with the theme chosen for the session.

He compared the Church to water, saying “if the water in the river doesn't flow, it stagnates and becomes unhealthy." He therefore insisted that the Church must not remain "hidden".

“When the Church goes out (to meet the world), it walks and it feels stronger.”

Increasing the role of the laity in the Church

Basic Ecclesial Communities are a Christian movement aimed at encouraging lay faithful to participate in the mission of the Church at the grassroot level, thus promoting a new way of “being Church”.

They began to spread in Latin America, and in particular in Brazil, in the 1960’s encouraged by the emphasis the Second Vatican Council and the 1968 Latin American Medellin Conference gave to a more active engagement of the laity in living and witnessing to the Gospel in society.

Opening the meeting on Tuesday, Bishop Gabriele Marchesi of Floresta, reference bishop for the BECs and a member of the Commission for Laity of the National Conference of Bishops of Brazil (CNBB), expressed his hope that the gathering may give a new energy to the Brazilian Basic Ecclesial Communities  and help increase the role of the laity in the local  Church.

“Every layman and woman, every community has to know that they are called to be protagonists in the life and mission of the Church,” he said.

Brazilian BECs held their first national inter-ecclesial meeting in 1975.

 

Elderly people symbolize the transmission of faith from age to age

As the Third World Day for Grandparents and the Elderly approaches on Sunday, the Dicastery for Laity, Family and Life renews its invitation for Christians to celebrate the event by attending Mass or visiting those who are alone.

Sunday, 23 July, marks the Third World Day for Grandparents and the Elderly. The theme chosen for this year is “His mercy is from age to age,” recalling a passage from Luke’s Gospel.

Ahead of the celebration, the Dicastery for Laity, Family and Life has released a statement reminding the faithful that Holy Mass that will be presided over by Pope Francis at 10 a.m. local time inside St. Peter’s Basilica, and it will see the participation of over 6,000 people, including “many elderly people from all over Italy.”

Specifically, “grandparents accompanied by their grandchildren and families, elderly residents living in retirement and residential nursing homes, as well as many elderly people who are active in parish, diocesan and associational life.”

From age to age

The statement highlighted how at the end of the celebration, five elderly people - one representative from each continent - “will symbolically hand over the World Youth Day Pilgrim's Cross to five young people leaving for Lisbon.”

The gesture symbolizes the “transmission of faith from age to age” but also “the commitment that the elderly and grandparents have accepted, at the invitation of the Holy Father, to pray for the departing youth and accompany them with their blessing.”

All those who will attend the event at St. Peter’s will receive a specific prayer to offer for the Day, along with a copy of the Pope’s message to grandparents and the elderly.

 'Women Deliver 2023': a female approach to build a better society

As 6,000 women from all over the world come together in Kigali, Rwanda, to take part in a project to create more integrated environments, Lia Beltrami presents works supported by the Dicastery for Communication and highlights the importance of networking.

The "Women Deliver" 2023 International Conference has gathered over 6,000 women from across the globe in Kigali, Rwanda, from 17 to 20 July.

Dialogues and sharing

The convention is one of the largest multi-sectoral gatherings to promote gender equality, held every three years and for the first time in Africa.

The meeting featured dialogues and sharing of best practices organized by civil society groups, governments, individuals, foundations and charities, youth groups, and communities facing systemic discrimination.

The program presented both in-person and online discussions, with topics ranging from health to economics to education to art.

At the opening ceremony were present, among others, the presidents of Rwanda, Senegal, Ethiopia, Guinea, and Graça Machel, Nelson Mandela's third wife. 

"Networking is the key"

Lia Beltrami, filmmaker and art director, participated on behalf of the World Women's Observatory, an initiative of the World Union of Catholic Women's Organisations (WUCWO). She is the author of the exhibition Women's Cry and the documentary In-Visibles, both projects supported by the Vatican Dicastery for Communication (Vatican News' parent organization).

"Networking is the key," according to Ms. Beltrami, who underlined the presence of international foundations and Nobel prize-winners parallel to the presentation, as well as "start-ups carried out by women in Rwanda."

Women's Cry

Ms. Beltrami focused on her Women's Cry exhibition, which is part of a larger project called "Emotion to generate change," aimed at touching "hearts through art." 

The 26 photos, portraying thematics ranging from labour and motherhood to environmental issues, are all accompanied by a quote from the Encyclical letter Fratelli tutti.

"After years where it all became online, to meet in person so many women from all corners of the world is a thrill," Ms. Beltrami affirmed, stating how "there is no one-size-fits-all thinking," but, instead, "there is room for everyone."

She also noted the importance of the presence of the Catholic world through the exhibition, a very "advanced perspective," which allowed Women's Cry to be selected as a finalist at the WD2023 Arts & Film Festival along with 140 other works.

In-Visibles

The artist also touched on her other project, the movie In-Visibles, which has already been awarded at the Stockholm Film Festival and the Charity Film Festival in Monte Carlo and selected to be screened at six other festivals.

"It means that these invisible women are not so invisible anymore," Ms. Beltrami observed, also emphasizing how important it is for Africa to host such an impressive crossroads of women carrying experiences that might serve as a stimulus for other realities where the condition of women is still low-profile.

That same Africa that, recalling Pope Francis' appeals, must not be forgotten. 

A call that, according to Ms. Beltrami, has been well-received. "I have already found women here who had gone to see the Pope in Congo and South Sudan. They told me they had gone to hear him 'because his voice is a beacon for everyone', this they told me, even many non-Catholics."
