Pope Francis released from hospital returns to Vatican
The Pope leaves Gemelli hospital on Wednesday morning and visits the Basilica of Saint Mary Major to pray before the icon of the Virgin Mary Salus Populi Romani before returning to the Vatican just before 12 pm.

The Director of the Holy See Press Office, Matteo Bruni, has confirmed that the Holy Father was discharged from Agostino Gemelli Hospital shortly after 10.30 this morning.
In responding to questions from journalists, he noted that "Before returning to the Vatican, the Pope went to the Basilica of Saint Mary Major where, before the icon of the Virgin Mary Salus Populi Romani, he expressed his gratitude for the success of his surgery and offered a prayer for all the sick, especially those he had met during his stay in hospital. Shortly before midday he returned to Casa Santa Marta."
Pope Francis later sent a tweet via his @Pontifex profile: "I thank all those who have been close to me with prayer and affection during my hospital stay. Let us not forget to pray for the sick and for those who assist them."
Hospitalization and surgery
Wide media coverage focused on the Pope’s operation and hospitalization. It began quietly after the noontime Angelus of July 4th. In the early afternoon that day, the Director of the Press Office issued a statement that instantly became breaking news on what would usually be a sleepy summer Sunday in Rome, when he said the Pope had left his Casa Santa Marta residence and headed to the Agostino Gemelli University Hospital for a "scheduled surgery". Finally, close to midnight the Press Office issued the first medical bulletin noting that the Pope "has reacted well" to the operation due to a "diverticular stenosis of the sigma".
The affection of the world
His hospitalization marked the beginning of a week in which the eyes of the world moved from Saint Peter's Square to the tenth floor of Gemelli Hospital. Crowds began to gather outside the hospital, looking up out at the 10th floor windows out of curiosity, but also to accompany in prayer Pope Francis convalescing in the rooms up there. Among the first to wish the Pope a speedy recovery are Patriarch Bartholomew I and the Imam of al-Azhar Al Tayyeb. Soon from every part of the world, especially via social media, messages full of affection flooded in. Among the most expressive ones were cards from children hospitalized in Pediatric Oncology, a department located in front of the Pope's recovery rooms. The Pope visited with some of them on Monday afternoon and blessed them together with their families and the hospital staff.
Close to the sick
Daily mid-day medical updates marked the days of his hospitalization with reassuring press bulletins describing the Pope as alert and doing well after his operation. They then recounted his continuing recovery up to the completion of his post-operative treatment on Monday, when it was announced a few more days were added to his expected week-long hospitalization in order to complete the needed therapy. As concern for the Pope’s state of health became less urgent, the Pope’s stay at Gemelli Hospital presented opportunities to show his closeness to the sick and underscore the universal responsibility to assist and help them.
The highlight came last Sunday when the Pope made his first public appearance for the noontime Angelus led from the balcony of the tenth floor rooms. The crowds below cheered the Pope when he appeared, noticing he looked like he was doing well with his recovery. The Pope made an appeal for "good health service, accessible to all". He also stressed that no one, from sick children to the elderly, should be "left alone" and that everyone "may receive the anointing of listening, closeness, tenderness and care."
International Religious Freedom Summit takes place in Washington, DC
The first ever International Religious Summit takes place in Washington, DC, with the support of the US Catholic Bishops' Conference.

Washington D.C. is hosting the first ever International Religious Freedom Summit (IRC) this week. The event, which was announced in April by the United States Commission on International Religious Freedom (USCIRF), started on July 13 and runs through to July 15 , in a mixed format, bringing together more than 40 organizations of different faiths and countries committed to upholding religious freedom across the world.
The USCCB's support
The IRC Summit is co-sponsored by the Committee on International Justice and Peace of the United States Catholic Bishops’ Conference (USCCB) and will be held on a yearly base. Other organizations taking part include Aid to the Church in Need, the Pontifical Foundation of the Catholic Church supporting the Catholic faithful and other Christians where they are persecuted (ACN) , the Knights of Columbus, Churches for Middle East Peace, Open Doors , but also Muslim and Jewish organizations.
Religious persecution on the rise
The aim of the Summit is to provide insights on international religious freedom and address violations against religious liberty while providing a support group for those who are being persecuted for their faith. Religious persecution is on the rise in many countries: according to a Pew Forum on Religion & Public Life, 83 percent of the world’s approximately 7 billion people now live in countries with high government or social hostilities involving religion and persecution.
Raising public awareness
The summit also aims to create a coalition of global organizations that together will push for the cause of religious freedom in world, as it raises public awareness and boosts political strengths for the movement. “Every culture, nation, religious or political system must strive to better protect religious freedom, a vital human right”, Bishop David J. Malloy, chairman of US Bishops’ Committee on International Justice and Peace has pointed out.
Topics discussed and speakers
The topics discussed during the meeting include: the protection of refugees; sectarian violence in Nigeria; the use hi-tech for persecution purposes, religious discrimination and rising religious nationalism. Cardinal Timothy M. Dolan, Archbishop of New York and chairman of the USCCB’s Committee for Religious Liberty, Mike Pompeo, former US Secretary of State and Nancy Pelosi, Speaker of the US House of Representatives are amongst the speakers.
The USCIRF
The USCIRF is a U.S. federal bi-partisan commission created by the International Religious Freedom Act (IRFA) of 1998 with the task of monitoring violations of religious freedom internationally and making policy recommendations to the President, the Secretary of State, and the Congress. Its findings and recommendations are published in an annual report.

Pope sends blessing to new Minister General of Friars Minor
Pope Francis congratulates Father Massimo Fusarelli, who was elected minister general of the Order of Friars Minor on Tuesday.

Members of the general chapter of the Order of Friars Minor (OFM), simply known as the Franciscans, on Tuesday elected their new minister general. Italian priest Fr. Massimo Fusarelli, 58, will head the worldwide order for the term 2021-2027.
Pope Francis sent a message conveying his prayers and blessings to the new Minister General of the Franciscan order of the Friars Minor.
“Having learned of your election,” the Pope said in a telegram, “I congratulate you and assure you of my prayers and blessings, that the Lord may assist you and protect you in the performance of your service.”
The Pope further prayed that St. Francis may be an encouragement to Fr. Fusarelli in leading his friars.
New Minister General
The news of the election was made public on Tuesday by Cardinal João Braz de Aviz, Prefect of the Congregation for Institutes of Consecrated Life and Societies of Apostolic Life, designated by Pope Francis as the Cardinal delegate to preside over the General Chapter of the Order of Friars Minor.
The Chapter meeting, which runs from 3 – 18 July at the San Lorenzo da Brindisi International College saw the participation of 118 delegates from all over the world, including Fr. Francesco Patton, the Custos of the Holy Land.
The newly-elected Minister General is the 121st successor of St. Francis of Assisi, succeeding U.S. Franciscan Fr. Michael Perry, who was elected minister general in 2013 to continue the term of the then minister general Fr. José Rodríguez Carballo, whom Pope Francis transferred to the Vatican as secretary of the Congregation for Institutes of Consecrated Life and Societies of Apostolic Life. Fr. Perry was re-elected as minister general in 2015.
Fr. Massimo Fusarelli OFM
Born in Rome on March 30, 1963, Fr. Fusarelli grew up in the Italian capital with his family. He met the Friars Minor in the parish of San Francesco di Tivoli and professed his first vows on July 30, 1983. After his novitiate, he attended philosophy and theology at the Antonianum, the Pontifical University of Saint Anthony, obtaining a bachelor’s degree in theology in 1988. He professed his solemn vows on January 8, 1989, and on September 30 was ordained a priest.
He obtained a licentiate and then a doctorate in patristic theology from Rome’s Augustinian Patristic Institute in 1992. He taught patristic theology at the Institute of Religious Sciences of the then Pontifical Athenaeum Antonianum from 1991 to 1996.
From 1990 to 1999, he was animator of the vocation and youth ministry and from 1996 national coordinator. In this capacity, he was called to be a member of the National Council of the National Vocations Center of the Italian Bishops' Conference. From 1999 to 2003 he was formator of the friars of temporary profession, provincial councilor and provincial and national moderator of ongoing formation. From 2003 to 2009, Fr. Fusarelli was called to the General Curia as general secretary for formation and studies of the Order of Friars Minor.
He was Provincial Definitor, Animator of the pastoral care of vocations and then of ongoing formation; General Secretary of Formation and Studies from 2003 to 2009; General Visitor for the Province of Naples and then for the unification process of the Provinces of Northern Italy; He was elected Provincial Minister of the Province St. Bonaventure (Lazio and Abruzzo regions) on July 2, 2020.
Pope Francis: Don't throw plastic in the sea!

Pope Francis reminded the faithful on Sunday, 11 July, that today is Sea Sunday: “dedicated in a special way to all those who rely on the sea for their work and livelihood."
Celebrated annually, Sea Sunday, is a day for people to come together to pray for seafarers and fishers and thank them for the vital role they play in all of our lives.
As Pope Francis points out, it is also a day in which to highlight the importance of caring for the sea and its ecosystem.
Speaking after the Angelus prayer, the Pope said he is praying for seafarers and he exhorted everyone to take care of the oceans and of the seas.
“Take care of the health of the sea: no plastic in the sea!” he said.
8 million tons plastic enter the ocean every year
UN figures show 8 million tons of plastic enter the ocean annually, killing marine life and feeding into the human food chain.
Pope Francis makes many references to the need to care for oceans and seas in his encyclical “Laudato sì, On Care for Our Common Home”. In paragraphs 40-41, he writes: "Oceans not only contain the bulk of our planet’s water supply, but also most of the immense variety of living creatures, many of them still unknown to us and threatened for various reasons...Particularly threatened are marine organisms which we tend to overlook, like some forms of plankton; they represent a significant element in the ocean food chain, and species used for our food ultimately depend on them...In tropical and subtropical seas, we find coral reefs comparable to the great forests on dry land, for they shelter approximately a million species, including fish, crabs, molluscs, sponges and algae. Many of the world’s coral reefs are already barren or in a state of constant decline. 'Who turned the wonderworld of the seas into underwater cemeteries bereft of colour and life.'"
In a letter to business leaders at a 2018 Vatican conference on the fourth World Day of Prayer for the Care of Creation, he said “We cannot allow our seas and oceans to be littered by endless fields of floating plastic.”
“We need to pray as if everything depended on God’s providence, and work as if everything depended on us,” he said.
Holy See calls for shared responsibility to protect refugees and migrants
The Holy See's Permanent Mission to the United Nations calls for shared responsibility in protecting refugees and asylum seekers.

As forced migration continues to grow dramatically across the world, more generous resettlement policies are needed, together with a “stronger commitment to responsibility sharing”, the Holy See has reiterated.
According to the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) the number of forcibly displaced people fleeing from wars, violence, human rights violations, as well as natural disasters, has risen up to 82.4 million worldwide in 2020.Not just numbers
In a statement addressed on Monday to the 81st Standing Committee of UNHCR’s Executive Committee, the Vatican Permanent Mission to the United Nations and Other International Organizations in Geneva reminded that these people are not just numbers, but “fellow sisters and brothers”. This is why – it said - Countries should commit to a shared responsibility to ensure that “no one is left behind”, as Pope Francis has called for.
The need for a durable solution
The Vatican Permanent Mission said it is “regrettable” that the pandemic has “also become a crisis of protection as well as another cause of delay in the achievement of durable solutions”, reminding that the right to seek asylum is enshrined in the Refugee Convention of the Geneva and “ultimately acknowledges that we are one human family”.
Inadequate response to problems faced by refugees and asylum seekers
It expressed particular concern that in certain circumstances, the pandemic “has challenged fundamental norms of refugee law, particularly the right to seek asylum and the cardinal principle of non-refoulement”. The statement noted that, as the pandemic continues, “the problems faced by refugees and asylum seekers remain without an adequate response”, while “struggles of host communities remain unanswered”. “Resettlement quotas have dropped“ and the “impacts on access to healthcare and education have been enormous, with refugees often excluded from access to these basic goods”, it pointed out.
The need for stronger cooperation and solidarity
The Vatican Permanent Mission therefore called for a stronger “cooperation and solidarity, with the aim to assist effectively those States hosting a large number of refugees”, also remarking that refugees and displaced persons “are not merely the objects of assistance”, but are “subjects of rights and duties” that can give positive contributions to the hosting countries.
Balance between States' public health concerns and the right to seek asylum
While acknowledging and respecting the exclusive right of States to manage their own borders, the Holy See finally reaffirms “that it is possible to balance public health concerns and the respect for the principle of non-refoulement and the right to seek asylum”.

Pope appoints 2 bishops in Indonesia
Pope Francis on Saturday appointed an archbishop in Palembang and a bishop in Padang in Indonesia.
Among the other appointments of Pope Francis on July 3 are a bishop each in Chad and Mexico, and 2 bishops in Italy.
Palembang Archdiocese
In Indonesia, he transferred Bishop Yohanes Harun Yuwono of Tanjungkarang as Archbishop of Palembang, in south Sumatra province. His appointment on the eve of his 57the birthday came after the Pope accepted the resignation of Archbishop Aloysius Sudarso of Palembang. Archbishop-elect Yuwono was born on July 4, 1964, in Way Ray - Padang Dermin, in the diocese of Tanjungkarang. He completed his philosophical and theological studies at Saint Petrus Inter-diocesan Major Seminary in Pematangsiantar, Sumatra.
He was ordained a priest on December 8, 1992, for the diocese of Pangkalpinang. Thereafter, he was assigned the following responsibilities:
- 1993-1994: Assistant parish priest in Sungaliat and responsible for the parish of Mentok.
- 1994-1998: He obtained a licentiate in Islamology from the Pontifical Institute of Arabic and Islamic Studies - PISAI in Rome, Italy.
- 1998-2008: Formator at the Saint Petrus Inter-diocesan Major Seminary; lecturer in Islam at the STFT Saint Yohanes Institute of Philosophy and Theology and rector of the preparatory course in Pematangsiantar
- 2008-2009: During a sabbatical year in the Philippines he took a short course at the East Asian Pastoral Institute in Manila, the Philippines.
- 2009-2010: Rector of the Saint Petrus Inter-diocesan Major Seminary in Pematangsiantar and professor of Islam at STFT Saint Yohanes.
- Jul. 19, 2013: Appointed bishop of Tanjungkarang and consecrated on the following October 10
- Oct. 10, 2013: Consecrated bishop.
Diocese of Padang
Elsewhere in Indonesia, Pope Francis appointed Father Vitus Rubianto Solichin S.X., as bishop of the Diocese of Padang, in West Sumatra province. The 52-year-old priest of the Pious Society of Saint Francis Xavier for the Foreign Missions (Xaverians), is a lecturer in the major seminary and rector of the School of Philosophy, Jakarta.
The See of Padang has been vacant since the death of Bishop Martinus Dogma Situmorang, O.F.M. Cap., on November 19, 2019.
Father Solichin, was born on 15 November 1968 in Semarang, Java Island. He entered Saint Petrus Canisius Minor Seminary in Mertoyudan, Semarang, and later the Pious Society of Saint Francis Xavier for the Foreign Missions (Xaverians). He continued his philosophical studies at Driyarkara High School of Philosophy, Jakarta, and theological studies at Wedabhakti Pontifical Theological Faculty, Yogyakarta. He professed his religious vows in the Xaverian Congregation on March 18, 1996. Following his priestly ordination on July 7, 1997, he held the following responsibilities.
- 1997-2001: Obtained a licentiate in sacred Scripture at the Pontifical Biblical Institute in Rome, Italy.
- 2001-2007: Professor of sacred Scripture at Driyarkara High School of Philosophy and Major Seminary in Bandung.
- 2007-2012: Obtained a degree in Biblical theology at the Pontifical Gregorian University, Rome. Since 2013: Professor and vice-chairman for Academic Affairs at Driyarkara in Jakarta; member of the Xaverian Formation Team and the Xaverian Provincial Council of Indonesia.
- Since 2015: Rector of the Jakarta School of Philosophy.
- Since 2018: President of the Indonesian Biblical Scholars Association.
Jailed Indian Catholic Priest Jesuit Stan Swamy dies, awaiting bail
The 84-year-old ailing rights activist breathed his last on July 5 in a Mumbai Hospital, where he was being treated for Covid-19. Father Swamy was a Jesuit for 64 years, and a priest for 51 years.

Father Stan Swamy, the jailed 84-year-old Indian Jesuit priest who was championing the rights of indigenous and marginalized people in eastern India’s Jharkhand state, died on Monday. He breathed his last at 1.30 pm at the Holy Family Hospital in Bandra, Mumbai, where he was admitted for treatment over a month ago.
“We are deeply saddened at the passing away of Fr. Stan Swamy. We give thanks to God for Fr. Stan’s life and commitment to the poor indigenous people and their struggles,” wrote Cardinal Oswald Gracias of Bombay in a brief statement. "Fr. Stan’s arrest was very painful,” lamented the cardinal who is President of the Catholic Bishops’ Conference of India (CBCI). “Under the Indian criminal law, one is innocent until proved guilty,” he wrote. “Fr. Stan’s case did not even come up for hearing. We were eagerly waiting for the case to be taken up and the truth to come out," the cardinal wrote.
Arrest
India’s National Investigation Agency (NIA) that is tasked with fighting terrorism and sedition under the controversial Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act (UAPA), arrested Father Swamy on October 8 from Bagaicha, a Jesuit social action centre on the outskirts of Ranchi, the capital of the eastern state of Jharkhand.
The following day, he was lodged in Taloja Jail, near Mumbai. He was arrested for alleged links with Maoist insurgents who were said to have been behind the caste-based violence in Bhima Koregaon village in Maharashtra state in January 2018, in which one person was killed and many others injured. Fifteen others, including scholars, lawyers, academicians, cultural activists and an ageing radical poet, have also been implicated in the same case.
Serious health issues, Covid-19
Father Swamy who suffered from Parkinson’s disease had difficulty in even sipping water from a glass and depended on co-prisoners for his other basic needs. Besides, he also had hearing impairment and other age-related ailments.
The NIA court denied him bail twice, forcing him to twice move the Bombay High Court for bail. In the second week of May, the priest’s family members sought his release on grounds that he had contracted Covid-19 and was unable to even speak to his lawyers. While hearing his bail plea on health grounds on May 21 through a video linkup, the Bombay High Court sensed Fr. Swamy’s failing health, and offered him treatment in a government or private hospital. But the Jesuit turned down the offer, saying all he wanted was bail to go back to his home. “I would rather suffer, possibly die very shortly if this were to go on,” he said. He explained that when he arrived at the prison, his bodily systems “were very functional”, but in the over 7 months in prison, “there has been a steady, slow regression” of his health.
The Jesuit Conference of South Asia (JCSA) which also announced the death of Father Swamy said he was undergoing treatment at the intensive care unit of the Holy Family Hospital in Mumbai, where he was shifted from the Taloja prison following a High Court order on May 28. The ailing priest tested positive two days later.
JCSA said “the Bombay High Court was hearing some petitions, seeking bail and a constitutional challenge to a section of UAPA, on July 5 when his lawyer announced Stan Swamy’s death.” “He suffered a cardiac arrest at 4.30 am on Saturday, and deteriorated thereafter,” JCSA said.
Indian Church remembers Fr. Swamy
In his statement, Cardinal Gracias noted that “Fr. Stan worked tirelessly for the underprivileged and downtrodden, giving them a sense of dignity and upliftment.” The CBCI president said he personally witnessed the priest’s “dedication to the exploited tribals”. “This work had its own challenges, but Fr. Stan worked single-mindedly for the poor.” He hopes that “the truth will come out soon and his name will be cleared of all criminal conspiracy”.
The Archdiocese of Ranchi where Father Swamy served hailed him as “a champion of tribal rights, a fighter for justice and a symbol of courage”. “The fact that this sick man suffering with Parkinson disease was arrested at the age of 84, refused bail for over 7 months, not even allowed a sipper and finally contracted COVID in jail, itself is a sad reflection on those who got the innocent man arrested and the courts that refused to give him bail,” said a statement signed by Archbishop Felix Toppo of Ranchi and Auxiliary Bishop Theodore Mascarenhas. “The ‘caged parrot’ now sings in heaven but its blood is on our hands," they wrote, “May the hand of God intervene to bring justice to all innocent victims of insensitivity, vindictiveness and injustice. We have lost Fr. Stan Swamy but we still hope in the God of justice,” they added.
The Jamshedpur Jesuit Province, to which Father Swamy belonged, also expressed “a deep sense of pain, anguish and hope” at the death of the “servant in mission of justice and reconciliation”. In a Facebook post, Father Jerome Cutinha noted that the “author of life” had given Father Swamy “a mission to work among the Advasis [indigenous], Dalits [downtrodden] and other marginalized communities so that the poor may have life and life to the full, with dignity and honour”. “The Society of Jesus [Jesuits], at this moment, recommits itself to take forward the legacy of Fr. Stan in hits mission of justice and reconciliation,” Father Cutinha wrote.
Fr. Swamy’s commitment
Father Swamy has denied all charges against him saying Bhima Koregaon is “a place that I have never been to in all my life.” However, sensing his imminent arrest, he had released a video message explaining his situation. He said that what was happening to him was not something unique or happening to him alone. “It’s a broader process that is taking place over the country.” Prominent intellectuals, lawyers, writers, poets, activists and student leaders, he said, “are all put into jail just because they have expressed dissent…”.
This however did not dim his resolve to pursue his convictions. “I am happy to be part of this process because I am not a silent spectator,” he said in the video. He explained that with the creation of Jharkhand state in 2000, there were issues, such as displacement and land alienation because of mining, factories townships and dams”, in which the people who owned that land were not consulted. He engaged young activists to resort to the country rulings or laws that empowered the indigenous people in issues regarding their lands and territories.
Born on April 26, 1937, Father Swamy joined the Jesuit on May 30, 1957. He was ordained a priest on April 14, 1970. He took his final vows as a Jesuit on April 22, 1981. He died on July 5, 2021, thus becoming India’s oldest prisoner charged with terrorism to die in custody, awaiting bail.
