Pope appeals for peace and support for war-ravaged Syria
As the United Nations warns that Syrian communities are facing an unprecedented hunger crisis, Pope Francis urges nations to fund programs to help support people suffering in the Middle East.

Pope Francis appealed for donor nations to pledge their support for the Middle East at the 4th Brussels Conference on “Supporting the Future of Syria and the Region”.
“Let us pray for this important meeting, so that it might improve the dramatic situation of the Syrian people and those nearby, especially in Lebanon, in this serious social-political and economic crisis, which the pandemic has made even more difficult,” he said at the Angelus address on Sunday.
The Pope mentioned the countless children who suffer hunger, and urged leaders to seek peace.
The Brussels donor-pledging conference takes place online on Tuesday, 30 June. The funding summit is being hosted by the European Union and co-chaired by the United Nations. Heads of several UN agencies are also participating.
Covid-19 in Syria
Even though most of Syria’s relatively low number of confirmed Covid-19 cases have been identified in rural Damascus, there are serious concerns that Syrians – 9 in 10 of whom live on $2 or less a day – are dangerously exposed to the disease should it reach them.
The United Nations World Food Programme (WFP), the world’s largest humanitarian organization that is assisting almost 100 million people in around 83 countries each year, has warned about the spectre of hunger looming large over Syria.
200 percent food-price hike
WFP, which has made an impassioned appeal for funding to sustain its massive nutrition programme worldwide, estimates that 9.3 million Syrians, which is more than half of the country's population, are now food insecure.
“Syria today is facing an unprecedented hunger crisis as the prices of basic foods reach levels unseen even at the height of the nine-year conflict,” said WFP spokesperson Elisabeth Byrs, noting a 200 percent food price hike in under a year.
The UN’s food-assistance agency is helping 4.8 million people with food assistance in Syria, but to continue the programme WPF urgently needs $200 million.
Unless new funding is available by August, WFP has warned that it will be forced to drastically cut rations, as well as the number of people reached with food as of October of this year.
Over 13 million displaced or refugees
With more than half of Syria’s pre-war population - over 13 million people – now displaced across the country or refugees, UN humanitarian coordinating body OCHA also echoed the need for international support at next Tuesday’s funding summit in Brussels.
“A generation of children has known nothing but hardship, destruction and deprivation,” said OCHA spokesperson, Jens Laerke. “Now over 11 million people still inside Syria need aid and protection. The economy across the region is imploding, in Syria it is imploding, not least due to the impact of COVID-19,” he said.
Archbishop Paglia: healthcare systems must be rethought and reformed
The Pontifical Academy for Life, the Dicastery for Promoting Integral Human Development, and representatives of the Latin American Bishops' Conferences host an online meeting to call upon societies to reform their healthcare systems in the wake of the pandemic.

The Pontifical Academy for Life recently released a document entitled, “Pandemic and Universal Fraternity”. This document was at the centre of an online meeting held on Monday afternoon between the Pontifical Academy, the Dicastery for Promoting Integral Human Development, and representatives of Latin American Bishops’ Conferences (CELAM), which comprises Colombia, Central America, Cuba, and Mexico.
CELAM representatives expressed their desire to encourage “a dialogue” on health problems and on the common good, describing it as “a first step to save lives.”
Released at the end of March, the Document, calls for “an alliance between science and humanism” that should guide our response to the crisis.
Equal opportunities
According to Archbishop Paglia, "the Document released on 30 March underlines two decisive conclusions”.
The first concerns universal access to the best opportunities for prevention, diagnosis and treatment – which, he stressed, “should not be reserved only for a lucky few." He added that the distribution of a vaccine as soon as it is available in the future will be an important test case.
A new Document
Archbishop Vincenzo Paglia, President of the Pontifical Academy for Life, discussed some of the Academy’s most important contributions during the Covid-19 pandemic. He noted the Academy published the "Pandemic and Universal Fraternity" document on March 30, adding that in the coming days a second document will be released.
The upcoming document will be dedicated to the theme of Public Health: "Humana communitas in the era of a pandemic: Reflections on the Rebirth of Life".
Archbishop Paglia also anticipated that the Academy is working on a text on the elderly, "who have been and continue to be the most numerous victims of the pandemic.”
He explained that these texts are given to everyone for reflection, in order to help us understand “the meaning of what is happening in the world today”.
Archbishop Paglia reiterated Pope Francis’s words of warning that we are living through an era of “epochal change”. We realise how “timely” this statement is, said Archbishop Paglia, as there is no doubt that that "the whole horizon of healthcare must be rethought, both at a regional and at an international level.”
Responsible scientific research
The second conclusion regards the definition of responsible scientific research.
Archbishop Paglia explained that much is at stake, ranging from “the integrity of scientific research, to its freedom in terms of economic profit.” In this context, Archbishop Paglia explained that there is a call on international institutions to rethink aspects relating to the health of all members of the human family living in the common home: the planet."
Amid growing fragmentation
During the forum, sociologist Gianni Tognoni, denounced the "fragmentation" of governments' and scientists' responses to the crisis.
Msgr. Hector Fabio Henao, from Caritas Colombia, made note of the gravity of the current environmental crisis and its impact on health. Archbishop Carlos Garcias from Mexico insisted on the solidarity and responses that the Church can provide to populations in difficulty.
Bishop Alfonso Miranda, also from Mexico, discussed the importance of generating hope and giving concrete answers in the face of the social crisis caused by the pandemic.
Bishop Elkin Alvarez spoke of the serious "disarticulation of institutions" and the lack of responses to the needs of the people in Colombia.
Bishop Elkin Alvarez was asked to accompany the reflection of the Church in Latin America to ensure that the Church itself is capable of generating hope and solidarity.
Archbishop Paglia concluded the forum reiterating that "we need to reform the health system." But, he said, the world above all needs "a decisive change towards a civilization of love, solidarity, fraternity."
New Directory for Catechesis released
The Pontifical Council for Promoting the New Evangelization releases a new Directory for Catechesis, providing guidelines for the Church’s mission of proclaiming the Gospel through catechesis and evangelization.

The long-awaited updated Directory for Catechesis was released in the Vatican on Thursday. It was drafted under the direction of the Pontifical Council for Promoting the New Evangelization. It was approved by Pope Francis on 23 March - the liturgical memorial of Saint Turibius of Mongrovejo, a 16th century saint who gave a strong impetus to evangelization and catechesis. This latest edition comes as a follow-up to the “General Catechetical Directory” of 1971, and the “General Directory for Catechesis” of 1997 both of which were issued by the Congregation for Clergy.
The new Directory seeks to highlight the close link between evangelization and catechesis. It underlines that every baptized person is a missionary called to find new ways of communicating the faith with commitment and responsibility. In this regard, the new Directory proposes three major principles of action: Witnessing, Mercy and Dialogue. The new Directory containing over 300 pages, and is made up of 3 parts divided into 12 chapters.
Formation of Catechists
The first part, entitled “Catechesis in the evangelizing mission of the Church”, treats the formation of catechists.
The Directory points out that in order to be credible witnesses of the faith, catechists have to be “catechized before being catechists.” This involves working with gratuitousness, dedication and integrity, according to a missionary spirituality that is an antidote from “sterile pastoral fatigue”.
Catechists are also called to be vigilant in performing their specific task “so that absolute protection is guaranteed to every person, particularly to minors and vulnerable person.”
Catechetical process
The second part - “The process of catechesis” - underscores the importance of a “profound and effective communicative model”. It proposes the use of art through the contemplation of beauty as a means of connecting with God, and sacred music as a way of instilling the desire for God in the heart of people.
The role of the family also comes to the fore. There those being evangelized can live the faith in a simple and spontaneous way. It is also where people can receive Christian education in a humble and compassionate manner.
In the face of new family scenarios in contemporary society, Christians are called to accompany others with closeness, listening and understanding in order to restore hope and trust to all.
A culture of inclusion
The Directory also highlights the importance of “welcoming and recognizing” the differently-abled. It stresses that they are witnesses to the essential truths of human life and are to be welcomed as a great gift. Their families also are deserving of “respect and admiration”.
In the same way, catechesis should focus on acceptance, trust and solidarity for migrants, who, far from their homeland, may experience a crisis of faith. Migrants are to be supported in the fight against prejudices and the serious dangers they may face, such as human trafficking.
Preferential option for the poor, catechesis for prisoners
The Directory calls for attention to be given to prisons describing them as an “authentic mission land”. It proposes that for prisoners, catechesis should be the proclamation of salvation in Christ, as well as caring listening which shows the maternal face of the Church.
As regards the poor, catechesis should educate people about evangelical poverty. It should also promote a culture of fraternity and foster indignation among for faithful against situations of misery and injustice suffered by the poor.
Parishes, schools and Church associations
The third part, entitled “Catechesis in Particular Churches”, is dedicated to catechesis in parishes, ecclesiastical movements and other Church associations.
Parishes are highlighted as “examples of community apostolate” which should provide creative catechesis adapted to people’s lived experience. Other Church associations are also recognized as having “a great evangelizing capacity” that adds to the “Church's richness”.
Regarding Catholic schools, the Directory proposes a movement from being "scholastic-institutions" to becoming "scholastic-communities" of faith with an educational project based on Gospel values. It also notes that teaching religion is distinct from, but complementary to, catechism.
Stressing that “the religious factor is an existential dimension that should not be overlooked,” the Directory affirms that “it is the right of parents and students” to receive an integral formation that takes the teaching of religion into account.
Cultural and religious pluralism
The Directory points out that ecumenism and interreligious dialogue with Judaism and Islam is a special area for catechesis. Catechesis must “encourage the desire for unity” in order for it to be a true instrument of evangelization.
It calls for a dialogue that combats anti-Semitism, and promotes peace and justice with Judaism. At the same time, it urges the faithful to avoid superficial generalizations in order to foster dialogue with Islam.
In our contemporary context of religious pluralism, the Directory calls for catechesis that can “deepen and strengthen the identity of believers”, promoting their missionary impetus through witnessing as well as “friendly and cordial” dialogue.
Technology and the digital world
The Directory reaffirms that science and technology are at the service of the person and should be directed towards improving the living conditions of humanity.
It proposes that catechesis should be directed towards educating people in the proper use of the digital culture, which has both good and bad elements. Catechesis should also focus on helping young people distinguish truth and quality amid the “culture of the instantaneous.”
Other themes highlighted by the Directory include the call to a “profound ecological conversion”. Catechesis promotes this conversion through attention to the safeguarding of creation and the avoidance of consumerism.
It also highlights that catechesis is to inspire labour according to the Social Doctrine of the Church with special attention to the defense of the rights of the weakest. In addition, it encourages the development of catechetical material produced on the local level and organization at the service of catechesis including the Synod of Bishops and Episcopal Conferences.
India’s Ranchi Archdiocese reaches out socially disadvantaged groups
As the world continues to face the economic downturn of the Covid-19 pandemic, despite easing of lockdowns in many countries, the Archdiocese of Ranchi, in the eastern Indian state of Jharkhand, is particularly reaching out to disadvantaged groups.

Bringing humanitarian aid, solidarity and consolation to humanity, without any discrimination of ethnicity, religion, culture or social class. This is the thrust of the emergency outreach programme of Ranchi Archdiocese in eastern India’s Jharkhand state.
India, which has been registering record highs of new Covid-19 infections recently, is currently in Phase 5 of the lockdown, June 1-30. While restrictions are continuing in high-risk containment zones, they have been partially relaxed elsewhere in what is termed as “Unlock 1” phase.
Subsequent “Unlock” phases will allow reopening of further activities such as educational institutions, international air travel, operation of metros and recreation, depending on state government plans.
Regardless of religion or caste
Archbishop Felix Toppo of Ranchi and Auxiliary Bishop Theodore Mascarenhas, together with priests, seminarians and young people, have helped over 300 needy Harijan Muslim and tribal families.
This emergency work of the archdiocese assumed a particular significance on the feast of the Sacred Heart of Jesus, June 19th. "The feast indicates the overflowing love of the heart of God which flows to humanity through Jesus,” Archbishop Toppo told Fides. “Christians are called to share this same love with others."
The food kits containing rice, legumes, soybeans and other ingredients, were distributed to over 50 Harijan or disadvantaged families in their homes in the Dom Koch shanty. They were also distributed to over 90 needy families of Kafur shanty.
The president of the Catholic youth of the Archdiocese, Kuldip Tirkey, explained that local community leaders have been deployed to provide help “to all people in need without distinctions of caste, belief, ethnicity".
Focus on disadvantaged groups
Bishops, priests, nuns and Catholic faithful of numerous other Indian dioceses have also been reaching out to migrants in difficulty, women, poor families and others by distributing food, medicines and other essential goods.
Ranchi Archdiocese has been particularly focussing its attention on discriminated and disadvantaged groups.
Earlier on June 16, the archbishop led a team to two villages of Ranchi District, where they distributed food rations and sanitizing kits to more than 170 families of freedom fighters.
Food rations and sanitation kits were also distributed on Trinity Sunday, June 7, more than 1000 cycle rickshaw pullers of Ranchi city, who were suddenly robbed of their only source of daily livelihood when the Indian government ordered a nationwide lockdown on March 24 to prevent the spread of the Covid-19 pandemic.
Out of Jharkhand’s 32 million population, 9 million belong to tribal groups. About 1.5 million people in the state are Christians, half of whom are Catholics.
Ireland gets new Prime Minister
The leader of one of Ireland’s main political parties replaces Leo Varadkar as Prime Minister or taoiseach on Saturday following an historic deal.

The leader of Ireland’s Fianna Fail party, Micheál Martin was elected Taoiseach or Prime Minister on Saturday after the country’s parliament or Dàil met in special session.
Mr. Martin was expected to meet with Irish President, Michael D Higgins to receive his seal of office.
His election comes after the three political parties: Fianna Fail, Fine Gael and the Green Party voted to approve a coalition deal Friday night.
The two larger centre-right parties needed the support of the Greens to have a working majority in the Irish parliament.
This historic deal comes after no party received a majority vote in a February General election.
In the last few months, coalition talks were put on hold due to the coronavirus pandemic.
Under the agreement, Fianna Fail's Micheál Martin will become prime minister for the first half of a five-year term and hand back to outgoing Prime Minister Leo Varadkar of Fine Gael in December 2022.
Mr. Martin’s new Cabinet is expected to meet Saturday evening. He will also appoint members of the country’s upper house of parliament or Seanad.
For decades both parties have been the dominant forces in Irish politics, and have their roots in Ireland's 1920s civil war.
This is the first time, however, they will share power.

US Bishops issue annual child and youth protection report
The U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops’ Secretariat of Child and Youth Protection releases its 2019 Annual Report.

The United States Conference of Catholic Bishops (USCCB) announced on Thursday that its Secretariat of Child and Youth Protection has released “Findings and Recommendations on the Implementation of the Charter for the Protection of Children and Young People.”
The 2019 report for the year July 1, 2018 to June 30, 2019 shows that 4,220 adults came forward with 4,434 allegations of abuse. The figures are a marked increase compared to the previous year.
The statement says that the rise is due in part to new complaints that were added during trials, compensation programs and bankruptcy proceedings in progress.
The document also shows 37 allegations were made by current minors, of which 8 were substantiated, 7 were unsubstantiated, and 6 were unable to be proven. Twelve allegations are still under investigation, 3 others were referred to religious orders, and 1 was referred to another diocese.
During the same period, the findings reveal that American dioceses and eparchies helped and gave psychological support to 1,138 new victims and their families. Together with them, 1,851 victims and family members who reported abuse in previous audits continued to be assisted.
In 2019, more than 2.6 million background checks were conducted on clergy, staff and volunteers working for the Church. In addition, 2.6 million adults and 3.6 million children and youth were involved in information and awareness training programs to help recognize and report abuse.
The report also looks at how dioceses are implementing the measures in the Charter for the Protection of Children and Young People, also known as the Dallas Charter, launched by the American bishops in 2002 in response to allegations of sexual abuse of minors by clergy.
Inspections carried out in 64 dioceses and eparchies and an examination of data provided by 130 other dioceses found only three to be partially non-compliant: the Diocese of Oakland, the Philadelphia Archdiocese of the Ukrainians and the Diocese of St. Thomas of Syro-Malabar.
Three eparchies, on the other hand, did not participate in the audits: the Syro-Malankarian eparchies of St. Mary Queen of Peace, St. Peter the Apostle of St. Diego of the Chaldeans and St. Nicholas of the Ukrainians of Chicago.
The new report is based on audits conducted by law firm, StoneBridge Business Partners, and includes an investigation carried out by CARA, the Research Center for the Apostolate at Georgetown University.

वाटिकन सिटी, बुधवार 24 जून 2020 (वाटिकन न्यूज) : बुधवार 24 जून को संत पापा फ्राँसिस ने वाटिकन के प्रेरितिक भवन के पुस्तकालय में आम दर्शन समारोह को जारी रखते हुए सभी श्रोताओं को अपना संदेश दिया। इसके उपरांत संत पापा ने इटालियन श्रोताओं का अभिवादन कर उन्हें कलीसिया द्वारा निर्धारित संत योहन बपतिस्ता के जन्म दिन की याद दिलाई।
संत पापा ने कहा, "आज संत योहन बपतिस्ता का जन्मदिन समारोह है।" आइए, हम उनसे सीखें जो येसु के अग्रदूत थे और सामर्थ्य के साथ सुसमाचार की गवाही देने की क्षमता रखते थे, हम अपने मतभेदों से परे, सद्भाव और मित्रता को बनाए रखते हुए, विश्वास की उद्घोषणा कर सकें।”
संत पापा ने स्पानी भाषा बोलने वाले श्रोताओं को अपने संबोधन में यह भी कहा कि, संत योहन बपतिस्ता और राजा दाऊद दोनों जानते थे कि सच्चे ईश्वर के प्रति लोगों का ध्यान कैसे खींचना है।
उन्होंने प्रार्थना की कि उनका उदाहरण सभी विश्वासियों के लिए प्रोत्साहन का स्रोत बने, ताकि "हम प्रार्थना के माध्यम से ईश्वर की मित्रता की तलाश कर सकें और हमारा उदाहरण ईश्वर को अपने विश्वासियों के बीच और सभी विश्वासी पुरुषों और महिलाओं को ईश्वर तक तक लाने में मददगार साबित हो।"
सृष्टि की सुंदरता में ईश्वर
उत्तरी गोलार्ध में वर्तमान समशीतोष्ण मौसम की ओर अपने विचारों को मोड़ते हुए, संत पापा फ्राँसिस ने उम्मीद जताई कि गर्मी का मौसम "ईश्वर की उत्कृष्ट रचना में ईश्वर को ढँढ़ने, चिंतन करने और महसूस करने का सुन्दर अवसर हो।"
उन्होंने प्रार्थना की कि कोविद -19 संकट के बावजूद, छुट्टियों का मौसम "आराम का एक शांतिपूर्ण समय, सृष्टी की सुंदरता का आनंद लेने और हमारे तथा ईश्वर के बीच संबंधों को मजबूत करने का समय हो।"
