Christians are worried: Sangma tells parliament

Sangma, who is a Christian himself, expressed concern over growing incidents of anti-Christian violence in the country; saying: "we are worried and also scared."

New Delhi:  Amid controversies pertaining to attacks on churches and re-conversion row often putting the Modi government on the defensive, the former Lok Sabha speaker and NCP MP, P A Sangma Thursday said that several Christian institutions have made out a "better" citizens of Indians across the country.

Quoting Mother Teresa for having said once that she had "converted" people --- Hindu to a "better Hindu" and a Muslim to a "better Muslim", the law maker from Meghalaya said, "there are instances when a number of prominent Indians and politicians have had early education in Christian institutions.

"The Union Minister Piyush Goyal is a Don Bosco product, so am I," he said in Lok Sabha participating in a debate on Motion of Thanks to President's address to the joint sitting of Parliament.

Similarly, he said, "we have converted L K Advani from a Hindu to a better Hindu because he studied in St Patrick school and Jyoti Basu was a product of St Xavier’s".

Sangma, who is a Christian himself, expressed concern over growing incidents of anti-Christian violence in the country; saying: "we are worried and also scared."

But he lauded the Prime Minister Narendra Modi for his statement that his government will protect people of all caste and religion.
