Bishops' office calls for peace on world peace day
Pope Francis, who is widely viewed as an apostle of peace, presents the world a new key to peace: Fraternity.
In a press statement, Fr. Charles Irudayam, secretary OPJD, also requested the faithful to pray for peace in the world, particularly in Palestine-Israel as the World Week of Peace for Palestine-Israel is observed during Sept. 21 - 27.
“The International Day of Peace comes to greet the world at a time when war, violent conflicts and strife are choking the world,” he said.
Sept. 21 was established as International Day of Peace by the UN General Assembly in 1981 with the objective of strengthening the ideals of peace, both within and among all nations and peoples.
Twenty years later, in 2001, the General Assembly established the day as an annual day of non-violence and cease-fire.
“This year’s International Day of Peace theme, Right of Peoples to Peace, recognizes the 30th United Nations General Assembly Declaration on the Right of Peoples to Peace,” he said in the statement.
Fr. Irudayam stated that much before the UN realised the significance of peace, the Catholic Church has been steadily promoting the cause of peace.

“Without fraternity it is impossible to build a just society and a solid and lasting peace,” the pope had said in his World Peace Day message.
