New bishop appointed for Jammu-Srinagar diocese
He succeeds Bishop Peter Celestine, who resigned after reaching the retirement age of 75.
Fr. Pereira also has been appointed as the apostolic administrator of the diocese until the date of his taking possession as a bishop, according to a press relase.
The announcement of the new bishop coincided with the feast of St. Francis Xavier.
Fr. Pereira succeeds Bishop Peter Celestine, who resigned after reaching the retirement age of 75.
The bishop-elect was born on June 1, 1964 in Vasai diocese of Maharashtra. He was ordained a priest in 1993 for Jammu-Srinagar diocese.
He served as the rector of the St. Paul’s Minor Seminary in Jammu from 2000-2003 and the vicar general and secretary of the Jammu-Srinagar bishop from 2004-2009.
He was the parish priest of Our Lady of Fatima Church in Bishnah from 2009-2012. Since 2012, he has been serving as the principal of the Burn Hall Higher Secondary School in Srinagar.
