Saint Jerome Saint Jerome, born in Dalmatia in 329, was sent to school in Rome. His boyhood was not free from faults; his thirst for knowledge was excessive, and his love of books, a passion. He had studied under the best masters, visited foreign cities, and devoted himself to the pursuit of learning. But Christ had need of his strong will and active intellect for the service of His Church. He told him in a supernatural experience he never forgot that he was not a Christian, but a Ciceronian: Your heart is where your treasure is, said the Lord to him — that is, in the eloquent writings of antique times. Saint Jerome obeyed the divine call, making a vow never again to read profane works, and another of celibacy. In Rome he had already assisted a number of holy women to organize houses of retirement where they consecrated themselves to God by vow. Calumnies, arising from jealousy, made a certain headway against the scholar whose competence was beginning to attract honors.
He fled from Rome to the wild Syrian desert, and there for four years learned in solitude, intense sufferings and persecution from the demons, new lessons in humility, penance and prayer, and divine wisdom. I was very foolish to want to sing the hymns of the Lord on foreign soil, and to abandon the mountain of Sinai to beg help from Egypt, he declared.
Pope Damasus summoned him back to Rome, and there assigned to the famous scholar, already expert in Hebrew and other ancient languages, the task of revising the Latin Bible. Saint Jerome obeyed his earthly Head as he had obeyed his Lord. Retiring once more in 386 to Bethlehem, the eloquent hermit sent forth from his solitary cell not only a solidly accurate version of the Scriptures, but during thirty years' time, a veritable stream of luminous writings for the Christian world. He combated with unfailing efficacy several heresies being subtly introduced by various personages in his own region and elsewhere.
For fourteen years the hand of the great scholar could no longer write; but Saint Jerome could still dictate to six secretaries at a time, to each on a different subject, in those final years. He died in his beloved Bethlehem in 420, when over 80 years old. His tomb is still in a subterranean chapel of its ancient basilica, but his relics were transported to Saint Mary Major Basilica of Rome, where the crib of Bethlehem is conserved.

Prayer vigil held for pastor imprisoned in Iran

Thursday marked two years since Saeed Abedini was jailed for his faith.

It has been two years since Pastor Saeed Abedini was imprisoned in Iran for preaching his Christian faith. On Thursday evening, his wife Naghmeh Abedini and Christian evangelist Franklin Graham hosted a prayer vigil in Washington, DC to encourage worldwide prayer for those imprisoned for their faith.

"The kids and I are longing to see Saeed returned home safely to us," Naghmeh Abedini said in a press release. "The kids have been suffering for too long. Our family is ready. It is time. We are praying for a miracle. My hope is that, as thousands gather together on September 26, our governments and leaders will be reminded of the importance of religious freedom for all and continue to pressure Iran to secure Saeed’s release.”

Thousands were expected to gather for vigils in about 30 countries according to the Be Heard Project, which is coordinating the event.

A similar event took place in 2013 on the one-year anniversary of Abedini's arrest. One day later President Obama called Iranian President Hassan Rouhani to express concern about Abedini’s treatment and called for his release.

Abedini was arrested in July 2012 while building a government-approved orphanage, and he is currently serving an eight-year sentence for threatening national security.

A press release stated that the pastor's plight "remains urgent as he faces physical torture, malnourishment, death threats and psychological abuse at the hands of the Iranian regime and fellow inmates, including those affiliated with the Islamic State."

Pope sacks bishop in Paraguay for promoting alleged pedophile priest

A Vatican statement said the removal of Rogelio Livieres Plano was made for 'serious pastoral reasons'.

Vatican City:  Pope Francis on Thursday sacked a Paraguayan bishop accused of protecting and promoting a priest described by his former church superiors in the United States as "a serious threat to young people".

In a statement, the Vatican said the removal of Ciudad del Este Bishop Rogelio Livieres Plano had been a "painful decision taken for serious pastoral reasons".

There was no mention of the precise circumstances behind the dismissal of the conservative bishop, as opposed to the more customary acceptance of his resignation.

The move follows a visit to Paraguay by senior Vatican officials charged with investigating a case that had led to a public war of words between the South American country's senior clerics.

"This grave decision of the Holy See was taken for serious pastoral reasons and was motivated by the greater good of unity in the church of Ciudad del Este and the episcopal communion in Paraguay," the Vatican statement said.

Livieres had been publicly attacked by his colleagues in Paraguay for his sponsorship of an Argentinian-born priest who was removed from his parish in the US state of Pennsylvania in 2002 following a civil suit over the alleged abuse of boys in his pastoral care.

The Church reportedly settled the suit in 2006 with a payment of US$400,000.

The priest, Carlos Urrotigoity, was sent to Canada for psychological assessment. According to US media reports, the assessment concluded that the priest was "locked into" a sexual attraction to male minors, that he should be banned from the ministry and that he should have no contact with young people.

Despite that verdict, Urrotigoity was able to resume his Church career. He moved to Paraguay in 2004 and has prospered there under the wing of Livieres, who is thought to be a member of the conservative Opus Dei sect.

In February of this year, Urrotigoity was named as Livieres's vicar-general, the number two in the diocese and the official with responsiblity for investigating allegations of inappropriate sexual behaviour by priests.

In the United States, Urrotigoity came under the authority of the Bishop of Scranton.

Earlier this year the Scranton diocese posted a statement on its website in which it said that the then-bishop Joseph Martino had warned everyone concerned about the danger posed by the Argentinian priest, including the papal ambassadors in the United States and Paraguay.

"In every instance, Bishop Martino clearly expressed his reservations concerning Father Urrutigoity, who was identified as posing a serious threat to young people."

Publicity surrounding the case triggered a spat within the Paraguyan church hierarchy. When the Archbishop of Asuncion demanded that Urrutigoity be removed, Livieres responded by calling the senior cleric "a homosexual".

Alarmed, the Vatican in July banned Livieres from ordaining priests and ordered him to remove Urrutigoity from his position.

The Church is sensitive to charges, levied by both the United Nations and thousands of abuse victims, that, for years, it instinctively protected serial sex offenders within the clergy.

US-based victims advocacy group SNAP questioned the Vatican's failure to explain clearly the reasons for Thursday's dismissal.

"For perhaps the first time ever, the Vatican has punished a bishop, who protected and promoted a credibly accused sex offender cleric," SNAP's Barbara Dorris wrote in an email.

"The trouble is no one is sure that's why Ciudad del Este's bishop is being punished. But a corrupt bishop's removal beats a corrupt bishop's resignation."

The Vatican insists that, under Francis's leadership, it has acted to root out behaviour the pontiff has described as akin to a "Satanic Mass".

In a move sanctioned by Francis, Polish cleric Jozef Wesolowski was this week placed under house arrest pending an unprecedented trial under Vatican law for the sexual abuse of minors and possession of child pornography.

Former archbishop Wesolowski, 65, was defrocked in June after a Church tribunal found that he had abused minors during his 2008-13 stint as the Vatican's ambassador to the Dominican Republic.

Church tribunals have resulted in the defrocking of nearly 850 priest for sex abuse in the last decade, during which time hundreds of millions have been paid to settle compensation claims by victims of abuse.

Christian pastor shot dead in Pakistan prison

Gunman also wounds 70-year-old British man on death row.

Pakistan:  Christian pastor Zafar Bhatti’s trial for violating Pakistan’s blasphemy law never got to the court verdict stage. That’s because Bhatti was shot dead Thursday in his Rawalpindi prison cell in an attack that also wounded his cellmate, 70-year-old British citizen Muhammad Asghar.

The motives of the alleged gunman, a member of an elite police unit, aren’t known. Regardless, Bhatti and Asghar are the latest victims of Pakistan’s dangerously ambiguous and discriminatory blasphemy law.

Police arrested Bhatti in 2012 on suspicion of sending “blasphemous” text messages, despite evidence indicating that the phone from which the messages were sent didn’t belong to him.

Ashgar’s conviction in January — based on allegations that he claimed to be a “prophet” of Islam — ignored evidence that he suffers from mental illness. Asghar, who was diagnosed with paranoid schizophrenia in the United Kingdom in 2010, declared his prophethood in court and even included a reference to it on his business card, a government prosecutor said at the time of his trial.

An official at Adiyala Prison in Rawalpindi confirmed that Asghar had been shot by a “jail employee” and was now “in a stable condition”.

"The employee has been arrested and investigations have been launched," the official said, requesting anonymity because he is not authorized to speak to the media.

Blasphemy is an extremely sensitive issue in Pakistan, where 97 percent of the population is Muslim. Section 295-C of Pakistan’s penal code makes the death penalty mandatory for blasphemy, though no one has yet been executed for the crime. The vagueness of the blasphemy law has long spelled peril for Pakistan’s religious minorities.

The law allows prosecution for derogatory remarks about Islam based on criteria including “imputation, innuendo, or insinuation, directly or indirectly” without providing criteria for such assessments.

Targets of the law have included Christians and the minority Ahmadiyya community, a heterodox sect that identifies itself as Muslim but has been declared non-Muslim under Pakistani law.

Bhatti and Ashgar are only the law’s latest victims. On 7 May, unidentified gunmen killed human rights activist and lawyer Rashid Rehman in an apparent reprisal for his willingness to represent people charged under the law. Rehman’s attackers remain at large.

Last week, gunmen shot dead University of Karachi professor Muhammed Shakil Auj for his liberal views on Islam. Auj had been labeled a "blasphemer" in a text message campaign.

Meanwhile, thousands have been charged under various provisions of the law since it was added to the penal code in 1986, including several dozen in 2013 alone.

At least 18 people are currently on death row for blasphemy in Pakistan, while another 20 are serving life sentences.

Mulling direct flights to Sri Lanka: Goa CM

Over five million devotees are expected to attend the event.

Panaji:  The Goa government is considering introduction of direct flights to and from Sri Lanka to facilitate travel for pilgrims from the island nation to the Exposition of Spanish saint Francis Xavier, a 40-day decennial event beginning Nov 22.

A Catholic Church official from Goa, also said that direct flights between Sri Lanka and Goa would help tap an increasing synergy between believers in St. Francis Xavier and recently cannonised Sri Lankan St. Joseph Vaz, who was of Goan origin.

"We are considering (the proposal). A request has come, which in-principle I have accepted. I cannot guarantee because it is not in my hands. We are trying to work out flights from Sri Lanka," Goa Chief Minister Manohar Parrikar told reporters, adding that a request would be made to the central government for this.

Every ten years, remains of the missionary saint, also called the 'Patron Saint of Goa', are kept on public display at an event called the Exposition of St. Francis Xavier at the Old Goa Church complex located 10 kms from here.

Earlier, the body was on permanent display. However, after noticing deterioration of the corpse, which was for nearly two centuries incorruptible, church authorities decided to allow devotees view it only once every 10 years during Exposition.

Over five million devotees are expected to attend the event.

This year more people from Sri Lanka are expected, Parrikar said

Fr. Alfred Vaz, a Goan Roman Catholic, chief organizer of the event, said that 2,000 to 3,000 Sri Lankans visit the remains of St. Francis Xavier in Goa, who also has a following in the island nation.

"A lot of Goans also go to Lanka too because of Saint Vaz and the legacy of work he has left there," Vaz told IANS.

Vaz was a 17th century priest who left Goa to spread Christianity in Sri Lanka subsequently. The process to formally cannonise him as a Catholic saint is almost complete.

After Jayalalithaa jailed, Panneerselvam takes over

Jayalalithaa was jailed late Saturday after a special judge sentenced her to four years in prison for amassing wealth illegally when she was chief minister in 1991-96. She was also fined Rs.100 crore.

Chennai:  Tamil Nadu's ruling AIADMK Sunday elected Finance Minister O. Panneerselvam as chief minister to succeed the jailed J. Jayalalithaa, who Saturday began serving a four-year prison sentence for corruption.

Panneerselvam, 63, who once ran a tea stall which is still with his family, once become the chief minister in similar circumstances in 2001 and held the post until Jayalalithaa bounced back.

The unanimous decision on Panneerselvam came hours after he and a few AIADMK leaders met Jayalalithaa at the Bangalore Central Jail and she told them to elect a new leader quickly to "assuage the hurt feelings" of the thousands of party cadres in Tamil Nadu following her jailing.

As AIADMK supporters massed in hundreds at the party headquarters in the heart of Chennai raised the V sign, AIADMK sources said Panneerselvam would call on Governor K. Rosiah to stake claim for the chief minister's post.

The development came amid lingering tensions in Tamil Nadu, where a 45-year-old committed suicide by hanging from a tree near Kancheepuram town while a 17-year-old girl student was battling for life in Madurai after setting herself ablaze to protest the jailing of Jayalalithaa.

In Bangalore, AIADMK men and women members gathered in large numbers and refused to budge without meeting their jailed leader. Police refused them permission to proceed to the jail where orders have been imposed banning the assembly of five or more people.

Carrying posters with pictures of 'Amma', demonstrators from Hosur, Krishnagiri and Dharmapuri districts of Tamil Nadu staged noisy protests on Bangalore's outskirts.

"We won't go till we are allowed to meet Jayalalithaa. She did so much for our welfare. It is unfair to jail her," a group of women screamed.

Earlier Sunday, Jayalalithaa told a few cabinet ministers who called on her in jail to convene a meeting of all legislators in Chennai and elect a new leader to serve as chief minister, an AIADMK leader told IANS.

The meeting lasting a hour was held over breakfast in the visitors' room of the Bangalore Central Jail.

Jayalalithaa was jailed late Saturday after a special judge sentenced her to four years in prison for amassing wealth illegally when she was chief minister in 1991-96. She was also fined Rs.100 crore.

Jayalalithaa's lawyers are expected to meet her later to discuss remedies to secure bail from the high court.

After spending Saturday night in a special cell in the jail's women's wing, the 66-year-old Jayalalithaa woke up at 5.30 Sunday and took a brisk walk on the lawn.

"She is fine. She had sugarless coffee and went through three Tamil newspapers and an English daily that her personal assistant brought for her," a jail official said.

The jail warden, however, refused to allow a special chair brought from Chennai for the use of Jayalalithaa, who suffers from back pain.

"As per the prison manual, we cannot allow outside things like furniture unless the court permits and doctors recommend," the warden said.

In Chennai, DMDK leader A. Vijaykant met Tamil Nadu Governor K. Rosaiah and sought protection for political parties in the state against violence unleashed by AIADMK cadres.

"I sought protection for all the parties in the state," Vijaykant said, after AIADMK supporters allegedly attacked rival political leaders as well as their homes and offices following Jayalalithaa's jailing.

Across the state, AIADMK supporters forced shopkeepers to down their shutters. Two government buses were set on fire. Traffic on the roads was thin.

But the situation was better in Tamil Nadu Sunday, compared to late Saturday.

Buses and shops were open in some cities but bus services in Salem, Cuddalore, Villupuram and some other cities did not operate. Bus services from Tamil Nadu to Karnataka remained suspended.

Church group moves cautiously in flood relief work

New Delhi:  Caritas India, the social service arm of the Catholic bishops in India postponed distribution of relief on Friday in Surankote block of flood affected Jammu and Kashmir state not yielding to pressure from certain families.

“Families in Surankote were demanding 82 tents out of which 38 families had already received tents from the Government,” said Caritas Officer Alin Naik,

“We postponed the distribution of tents there in consultation with the Sub-divisional magistrate” he added.

Officer Naik said that the decision was taken in order that the tents are fairly distributed to many other vulnerable people in Poonch, as identified by Caritas team.

Relief distribution on Friday could not proceed beyond 91 wash kits, 5 Non Food Item (NFI) kits and 5 tents in Surankote block and in a neighboring village.

Today as planned, the team hopes to distribute 50 Wash Kits (Water, Sanitation and Hygiene), 50 NFI and about 40 tents at Surankote and a few neighboring villages of Poonch district.

Meanwhile, Executive Director Fr. Frederick D’Souza expressed gratitude to the people of Delhi for pouring in financial support to Caritas’ work at Jammu and Kashmir.

“Within a couple of days from our appeal in the papers of Delhi, we are in a receipt of donations in lakhs to our account” Fr. D’Souza said.

Church set ablaze in Madhya Pradesh

Bhopal:  Some unidentified people set ablaze a church in Mandla district of Madhya Pradesh on Friday night after they broke open its gates.

Incident took place at Pakritola Ghutas village and heavy police force has been deployed in the village after the case was reported on Saturday morning.

"A case has been registered under relevant sections. Prima facie it seems to be work of some elements who committed the crime after getting inebriated. We have launched a hunt to nab the accused," Mandla SP Gaurav Rajput told the Times of India.

"Police personnel have been deployed in the village to avoid any flare up," Rajput said.

Sources said religious books, furniture, musical instruments etc and all things kept in the church were gutted.

Four empty bottles of alcohol were also found near a hand-pump in front of the church, added sources.

"There are around 50 families of the community in the village and around 200-250 people gather for Friday prayers but there has never been any dispute till now. In charge priest also ruled out any dispute or enmity with anyone," Bicchia police station in charge, Ramesh Shakya told the newspaper.

"There is no law and order situation in the village, but precautionary measures are being taken," he said.

Mumbai cardinal asks to vote for ‘good governance’

Mumbai:  Cardinal Oswald Gracias, the archbishop of Mumbai, says he want catholics in Maharashtra to vote for "good governance" in the upcoming state elections.

"We will appeal to voters to vote for good governance. India, and Mumbai of course, needs a government that promises inclusive growth, one that takes care of everybody," the cardinal told Times of India.

"Yet, whichever party or candidate people choose to vote for, I exhort them to cast their vote," Cardinal Gracias said.

Catholics have traditionally supported Congress party and Church leaders have in earlier occasions urged to vote for a secular party, which media interpreted as veiled support for Congress.

The Cardinal's call to vote for good governance is also seen as deviation from the traditional path as the Catholics in the city have taken firm political decisions, including to contest the polls as independent candidates.

East Indian community in the city has announced plans to contest the forthcoming assembly elections. Although they have formed a political party of their own named Maharashtra Swaraj Party (MSP) a few days ago, they will have to fight as independent candidates because the new outfit is yet to be registered, Times of India reported.

Civic activist Ashish Fernandes will contest from Dahisar while Andheri (East) will see Jancy Varghese join the fight. Prominent advocate Godfrey Pimenta, who is the trustee of the Watchdog Foundation, will stand from Vile Parle and his counterpart in Kalina is advocate Vivian D'souza.

D'souza is president of the Bombay East Indian Association. Advocate Shane Cardoz hopes to be elected in Bandra (West). All these social activists are contesting seats which have a sizeable population of East Indians.

However, this will likely fragment the Christian vote in Mumbai, which traditionally supported Congress.

During the 2014 Lok Sabha election, some priests made a slight diversion towards the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) saying the Congress had done precious little for Christians through the years.

However, since AAP is not fighting the assembly elections, the Christian vote will go divided between independent and Congress candidates.

The Synod could use a woman's touch

What good is a family synod comprised of post-middle age celibate males?.

Tokyo:  The Extraordinary Synod for the Family that will be held in Rome next month has attracted more attention than any synod since their introduction following Vatican II.

The media are focused on the possibility that changes may be made in such matters as birth control and reception of the Eucharist by Catholics who have divorced and remarried. The majority of Catholics who are aware of the synod are focused on those same concerns.

In the meantime, five cardinals are among those who have authored a book that is clearly meant to head off any relaxing of discipline inspired by Pope Francis' pastoral approach. In fact, they go beyond trying to head off relaxation and actually attempt to refute the pope, though they use Cardinal Walter Kasper (whose views the pope has endorsed) as their ostensible target. Clearly, they are worried.

However, low expectations are in order. There may in fact be some pastorally oriented moves at the synod, but it is unlikely that there will be immediate change. A call for "more reflection, study and prayerful consideration" is the likely outcome.

As with just about everything in the Catholic Church, decisions about what is worth consideration and what should result from such reflection will be made by people representative of no one but themselves.

Though celibate males are a statistically insignificant portion of the human race and even of the Church, the synod for the family will consist of post-middle-age celibate males who, in the phrase jokingly used by clerics, "have no children to speak of". Those men do not live in families, and probably have not done so since adolescence. They do not know of what they will speak nor the implications of what they will decide.

Even worse, the larger portion of the Church and the group most intimately involved in the life of families -- women -- will only be present as a few decorative elements.

Pope Francis has admitted that the Catholic Church has "not yet come up with a profound theology of womanhood", and has named five women to the International Theological Commission, bringing women members to 16 percent. So what?

Until women are in a position to actually exercise authority, it is window-dressing. More significant is the fact that the commission the pope appointed to develop a more pastoral approach to annulments contains not one female member and only one male representative of the laity who will be affected by the work of the commission.

As is invariably the case when there are calls for a more just order, whether in society or the Church, the response is that changes must not be made precipitously. "Slowly, slowly" is the motto.

But hasn't a wait of some 15-18 centuries been slow enough?

Those who actually read the New Testament and early Church history instead of reading into the New Testament and early Church history developments that came later know that Jesus was scandalously unconventional in his dealings with women and included them among his disciples.

The early Church had women in leadership roles (Junia, Prisca, Lydia, et al). So, female-free leadership in the Church is not an evolution, but a deviation. Making changes is a restoration and there is no excuse to further postpone a return to the ancient tradition.

This is not a call for the ordination of women. Ordination is not required for someone to exercise a role in leading the Church and setting directions. There have until fairly recently even been lay cardinals.

I have a suggestion for how Pope Francis might fast-track the restoration of women to leadership in the Church.

At present, cardinals retire at 75, but retain their voting rights in conclaves until age 80. As of today, 34 cardinals are in that category. How about lowering the age at which cardinals can be part of a conclave to what is already their retirement age and filling the immediate openings and the six current vacancies with women, thus making them one-third of the 120 electors?

This will bring women into the leadership, and will incidentally enable Pope Francis to better shape the College of Cardinals who will elect his successor. Then, he could bring married men into the college as other openings appeared. One third of electors women, one third lay men and one third clergy would be a good way to show the world that we truly believe that the Church is the whole people of God, inspired by the Holy Spirit and each and all responsible for the evangelization of the world.

That's not going to happen. But, unless and until some equally radical changes are made to the way the Church is led, from the smallest parish to the whole world, the women and men who are the overwhelming majority of Catholics will continue to watch with bemused indifference or frustrated anger as celibates pontificate and legislate about love, sex, family, child rearing and all the other elements of non-clerical life.

ராவல்பிண்டியின் Adyala சிறையில், கிறிஸ்தவப் போதகர் Zafar Bhattiயின் உடல் குண்டுக் துழைத்த காயங்களுடன் கண்டுபிடிக்கப்பட்டது. 2012ம் ஆண்டு ஜூலை மாதம் தேவ நிந்தனைக்குற்றம் சுமத்தப்பட்டுச் சிறைவைக்கப்பட்ட 45 வயதான Zafar Bhatti மீதான குற்றச்சாட்டிற்கு இதுவரை எந்த ஆதாரங்களும் சமர்ப்பிக்கப்படவில்லை என, ஆசியச் செய்தி நிறுவனம் கூறியது.

9. வளர்ச்சியடைந்த நாடுகளில் புகலிடம் தேடுவோர் எண்ணிக்கை அதிகரிப்பு

செப்.27,2014. பொருளாதாரம் வளர்ச்சியடைந்த நாடுகளில் புகலிடம் கேட்டு விண்ணப்பிப்போரின் எண்ணிக்கை வெகுவாக அதிகரித்துள்ளதாக ஐ.நா.வின் அகதிகளுக்கான நிறுவனம் (UNHCR) தெரிவித்துள்ளது.

இந்த ஆண்டின் முதல் ஆறு மாதங்களில் இவ்வெண்ணிக்கை மூன்று இலட்சத்து முப்பதாயிரமாக அதிகரித்துள்ளதாக ஐ.நா. கூறியுள்ளது.

கடந்த இருபது ஆண்டுகளில் இல்லாத அளவுக்கு, 2014ம் ஆண்டில் புகலிடம் கேட்போரின் எண்ணிக்கை அதிகரிக்கும் நிலை ஏற்பட்டுள்ளதாகவும், இதற்கு சிரியாவிலும் இராக்கிலும் தொடரும் மோதல்களே முக்கிய காரணம் எனவும் UNHCR கூறுகின்றது.

ஜெர்மனியிலும் அமெரிக்க ஐக்கிய நாட்டிலுமே மக்கள் அதிகமாகப் புகலிடம் கேட்பதாகச் சொல்லப்படுகின்றது.
