Warangal diocese gets new bishop

The new bishop’s episcopal installation is likely to take place in June.

 

New Delhi:  Pope Francis has appointed Fr. Udumula Bala Showreddy as new bishop of Warangal Diocese.

The appointment was made public in Rome Saturday at noon local time, corresponding to 15:30 hours, Indian Standard Time.

This is the first appointment made by the pope after he took over as the head of the Catholic Church.

The new bishop’s episcopal installation is likely to take place in June.

Fr. Showreddy was born in Ghanpur in Andhra Pradesh in 1954 and was ordained a priest in 1979.

The designated new bishop is currently working as deputy secretary general of the Conference of Catholic Bishops of India (CCBI) in Bangalore.

Fr. Showreddy has done Licentiate and Doctorate in Moral Theology at Alphonsianum, Rome.

He was also Teaching Moral theology at St. John’s Regional Seminary, Hyderabad from 1994 to 2006.

Archbishop Thumma Bala of Hyderabad, while congratulating the new appointee, said the Catholic Church is dedicated for the service of people in word and deed, with special reference to the poor and needy.
