Alappuzha:
Retired Bishop Peter Michael Chenaparambil of Allepey passed away following a cardiac arrest Thursday morning while undergoing treatment at a private hospital in Kochi. He was 83.

He had been in hospital since Sunday due to age-related ailments. Bishop Stephan Athipozhyil of Alleppey will lead the funeral services at the Mount Carmel Cathedral of Alappuzha (Allepey) Friday evening.

Bishop Chenaparambil took charge as the second bishop of the Allepey on September 4, 1983, and remained in the post till December 7, 2001.

Officials said the bishop, who took over from first Bishop Michael Arattukulam, will be remembered for his social service initiatives aimed at improving the lives of his people.

With the help of national catholic agencies, Bishop Chenaparambil had implemented a rainwater-harvesting project in the diocesan area, where people faced problems because of shortage of drinking water. He also popularized solar-powered hearths for cooking.

Born to Michael and Josephine of Chenaparambil in Manakodam in Thuravoor on December 8, 1929, he was ordained priest in Pune on June 1, 1956.

A qualified teacher, he also worked as parish priest, social worker, corporate manager, and vicar-general in the diocese. He had also served as the secretary general of the Kerala Catholic Bishops Conference (KCBC).

Pope John Paul II named him the Bishop of Alappuzha diocese on November 19, 1982. Bishop Stephan Athipozhyil took over from him in 2001.
