In the letter, the PLFI has sought 5 crore rupees as extortion, failing which the cardinal, who is also the Ranchi archbishop, would be killed.
"You have made moolah by spreading religion (evangelicalism), which is why you should give some cut to the organization. The police can do us no damage. The police do not have the capacity to arrest our men. If you do not pay, you will be killed," the letter read.
A self-styled PLFI zonal commander of Jharkhand Bengal region, Raj Kujur, sent the letter to the Cardinal’s house seeking the extortion money with a deadline of 15 days for the payment.
The district police have launched an investigation to find out whether the letter, sent from Kuchhu village under Ormanjhi block on the outskirts of the state capital, is authentic.
"The cardinal is an important leader of the Christian community. We have provided adequate security at his house. He will also be given security cover when he moves," city SP Jaya Roy said.
The cardinal house informed the Lower Bazaar police station about the threat letter on Monday evening.
