Pope: Youth Olympic Games a sign of hope emerging from world of sport

Pope Leo XIV sends his greetings to the participants in the Youth Olympic Games taking place in Senegal, he recalls the beatification of the Georgia Martyrs in Savannah, praises the upcoming World Week of the Poor, and asks for prayers for the dead, “especially for those whom no one remembers.”

Vatican News

Speaking during his Angelus address in St Peter’s Square on Sunday, Pope Leo XIV mentioned the Youth Olympic Games taking place in Senegal’s capital, Dakar, from 31 October to 13 November, and he expressed appreciation for the event that offers a platform for understanding and mutual respect.

The Pope told those present that the Games are for athletes aged between 15 and 18 and mark the first Olympic event to be hosted on the African continent.

“In addition to the sporting competitions, the programme includes educational and cultural activities aimed at promoting Olympic values and fostering understanding among young people from all over the world,” he said.

“Here, once again, we see a sign of hope emerging from the world of sport! I warmly greet and bless all the participants.”

Beatification of Georgia Martyrs

Pope Leo also mentioned the beatification of the Georgia Martyrs, which took place on Saturday, 31 October, in Savannah, Georgia.

“Yesterday, in Savannah, Georgia, in the United States, Pedro de Corpa and four companions, members of the Order of Friars Minor, who were killed in hatred of the faith in 1597, were beatified,” he said.

Noting that they were originally from Spain, the Pope said, “They generously responded to the Lord’s call to evangelize the peoples of the Americas, even to the point of giving their lives,” and he invoked these martyrs' intercession for all missionaries of the Gospel.

World Week of the Poor

Pope Leo also praised the upcoming World Week of the Poor promoted by the Friars Minor from 8 to 15 November that will take place in Rome.

“I congratulate the sons of Saint Francis who, through this initiative, are placing the poor at the centre, just as the Lord Jesus did and as Saint Francis of Assisi did. I also thank the civil authorities and law enforcement agencies for their full cooperation,” he said.

Commemoration of All Souls

Finally, the Pope reminded the faithful that on Monday afternoon, 2 November, on the Commemoration of All the Faithful Departed, he will celebrate Mass at Rome’s Verano Cemetery.

“During these days, let us feel united, in the communion of saints, with the vast family of brothers and sisters who have preceded us on our earthly pilgrimage. Let us pray for the dead, especially for those whom no one remembers.”

Candlelight procession for peace at St Mary Major on October 31

As October, traditionally dedicated to Marian prayer, draws to a close, a candlelight prayer gathering takes place on the evening of October outside Rome’s Papal Basilica of Saint Mary Major, for the protection of all those suffering from violence and division around the world.

Vatican News

As October draws to a close, a month traditionally dedicated to Marian prayer, the Papal Basilica of Saint Mary Major in Rome is organising a Candlelight Procession for Peace, entrusting to the maternal intercession of the Blessed Virgin Mary the desire for reconciliation among peoples and peace throughout the world.

The event is scheduled for the evening of Saturday, October 31 at 9 pm CET, in the square in front of the basilica. From there, participants will set out on a candlelight procession around the perimeter of the basilica complex.

Praying for those who suffer

Participants will join in a communal moment of prayer, with particular remembrance of populations affected by war.

The invocation to Rome’s beloved Salus Populi Romani will thus become a plea for protection not only for the “people of Rome,” but for all those who, wherever they may be, are suffering because of violence and division.

Peruvian Archbishop on Pope’s visit: For Latin Americans he is 'one of them'

Archbishop Lizardo Estrada Herrera, who succeeds Archbishop of Cusco, Richard Daniel Alarcón Urrutia, who died on October, 30 speaks to Vatican News about the exemplary ministry of his predecessor and the joy and excitement brewing in Peru for Pope Leo XIV’s upcoming visit.

From the coastline overlooking the Pacific Ocean to the Amazon rainforest, from colonial cities to the Andes, Peru is awaiting Pope Leo XIV.

The country is the third stop on his Apostolic Journey to Latin America, after Uruguay and Argentina, which will take place from November 6 to 17.

The people are joyfully awaiting the “Peruvian” Pope, an Augustinian who served as a missionary in the Piura region and in Trujillo during the 1980s and 1990s. In 2015, Pope Francis appointed him Bishop of Chiclayo, and five years later also named him Apostolic Administrator of the Diocese of Callao.

Peru is a multi-ethnic nation that has remained close to the heart of “Father Roberto,” and he has never forgotten his “querida diócesis” (beloved diocese) of Chiclayo, not even after his election to the papacy.

A festive atmosphere is spreading throughout the country in these days as it prepares to welcome the Pope. However, Peru has also been saddened by the death, on October 30, of the Archbishop of Cusco, Richard Daniel Alarcón Urrutia.

Archbishop Lizardo Estrada Herrera, appointed by the Pope as Coadjutor Archbishop of Cusco on August 29 and Secretary General of the Latin American and Caribbean Episcopal Council (CELAM), spoke to the Vatican’s media outlets about his predecessor.

An Augustinian religious originally from Apurímac, Archbishop Estrada Herrera described he considerable social commitment of his predecessor, his concern for the poorest and most vulnerable, the formation of the clergy, attention to young people, and his extensive collaboration with the Peruvian Episcopal Conference, particularly in promoting the synodal process.

Archbishop Estrada Herrera also discussed the social reality of his country, recalling the years when Father Robert Prevost was his formator, and expressed his heartfelt anticipation of the arrival of the Successor of Peter.
