Theologian Puthanangady dies

The funeral services will be conducted in Bangalore on Saturday morning.

Aluva:  Renowned theologian Father Paul Puthanangady, who was suffering from cancer, passed away today at his Salesain house in Aluva, Kerala. He was 79.

The funeral services will be conducted in Bangalore, where he worked long time, on Saturday morning, according to the website of the Catholic Bishops' Conference of India.

The burial services will be held at the Salesian Cemetery, Kristu Jyoti College, Bangalore.

The health of the Salesian, who completed 50 years as a priest this year, deteriorated over the past few days. Salesians' Bangalore provincial Father Thomas Anchukandom anointed him a week back.

Father Puthanangady, former director of the Bangalore-based National Biblical Catechetical and Liturgical Centre (NBCLC), had suffered a hipbone fracture after a fall on August 30. He underwent a surgery in Kerala.

He taught Liturgy and Sacramental Theology at Kristu Jyoti College, was a leading proponent of inculturation.

He was the chief organizer of the Indian Church's observation of two millennia of existence of Christianity, titled Yesu Krist Jayanti 2000.

Father Puthanangady was the Episcopal Vicar for Religious at the Archdiocese of Bangalore.
