Mararikulam:  A coastal village in south Kerala is close to becoming the first woman-friendly panchayat in India.

Mararikulam Grama Panchayat, which borders the Arabian sea, is transforming itself into a safe haven for women and female children, where they can move freely, fearlessly as well as live in dignity and pride.

This economically backward panchayat is making remarkable progress in implementing effective programs for the empowerment of women, after conducting various scientific studies and analysis.

Most of the women folk living of this seashore village are fish sellers and daily wage labourers.

Mararikulam, widely considered the first women friendly Panchayat in the country, is setting a model for the whole world by making women and girls capable of self-defense.

The women living in this Panchayat now have the courage to tackle attempts of harassment or molestation. Many of them regularly travel by public transport late at night or early in the morning to sell fish.

In this panchayat, where a self protection programme is being implemented in an extensive manner, over 7,262 girls from schools from the upper primary to 12th levels have so far been trained in Taekwondo, the martial art form which combines combat and self-defense techniques with sport and exercise.

The panchayat also has plans to start awareness classes for boys on how to behave with as well as treat women. The local administration has also implemented a slew of schemes for ensuring the safety of women.
