Fresh probe demanded in Karnataka church attacks

The state witnessed at least 24 attacks on Church institutions and Christians in 2008.

Bangalore:  A legislator in Karnataka has demanded a fresh probe into the incidents of church attacks in the state.

J R Lobo, representing Mangalore constituency, pointed out in the state assembly that the report submitted by Justice Somashekhara Commission on the attacks is full of contradictions.

He asserted that in view of these things, there was a strong case of holding fresh investigation into these incidents.

“The above report has not specifically said anything about the persons and organizations involved in the attacks, or politicians who instigated them. Moreover, none of the culprits have been punished. In such a scenario, how can the people have faith in the government?” he questioned.

The state witnessed at least 24 attacks on Church institutions and Christians in 2008.

The Justice B. K. Somasekhara commission in its 1,000-page report said “no true Hindu” had a role in the attacks.

The report was flayed by the Christian community in the state.

Lobo said that the brand image which Mangalore once enjoyed, is now facing danger from incidents of moral policing, which has given rise to a situation of apprehension and fear.

Stating that the previous BJP government in the state had saffronized the text books during its term, he demanded for the dissolution of text book committees and to form them afresh by bringing together expert educationists.
