Cardinal urged to appeal against death penalty of Veerappan aides

He was urged to appeal to the President of India.

Thiruvananthapuram:  A Tamil Nadu-based people’s movement has urged Cardinal Mar Baselios Cleemis to intervene in the case of four Veerappan aides, who are on death penalty.

The people’s movement, SAMAM, along with family members of the four accused of colluding with forest brigand Veerappan, submitted a memorandum to the Cardinal in this regard.

They asked him to appeal to the President of India against the death penalty given to the four.

The president had recently rejected their mercy plea.

The four convicts in the case are Simon, Belevendiran, Gnanapragasam and Meesai Madayyan from Martalli village in Karnataka.

As of now, the four convicts are awaiting death sentence at Belgaum prison.

Meera Mathew, SAMAM national convener, said the Cardinal had assured he would make an appeal for them on behalf of the Catholic Hierarchy of India.
