New Delhi:  Pope Francis has accepted the resignation of Bishop Prasad Gallela of Cuddapah, and has appointed BIshop Gali Bali (79), retired Bishop of Guntur, as its Apostolic Administrator on Dec. 10.

Bishop Gallela, 56, has been facing multiple court cases over an accusation that he misappropriated diocesan funds to support his "wife" and teenage son, but the bishop has denied the charges.

He has been served notice to appear on Aug. 18 before Lok Adalat, a government-approved forum, to amicably settle cases pending in courts.

Two lay Catholics, 40-year-old Mesa Ravi Kumar and 65-year-old Byreddy Chinnappa Reddy, jointly moved a criminal complaint against the prelate in June this year.

The bishop has consistently denied charges.

Two years ago he was kidnapped and attacked by unidentified men.

The bishop was blind-folded, handcuffed and forcibly taken away while he was travelling home after celebrating Mass

Two priest of his own diocese were under investigation for kidnapping and attacking the bishop.

Cuddapah, which has some 114,800 Catholics, is a suffragan diocese of Hyderabad Archdiocese.
