Amaravati bishop becomes Nagpur archbishop

The seat of archdiocese of Nagpur was vacant since the death of Archbishop Abraham Viruthakulangara.

New Delhi:  Pope Francis appointed Bishop Elias Gonsalves of Amravati the archbishop of Nagpur on Dec. 2.

The seat of archdiocese of Nagpur was vacant since the death of Archbishop Abraham Viruthakulangara. He did unexpectedly of a heart attack in Delhi on April 19, 2018.

Bishop Gonsalves, a native of Thane in Maharashtra, studied at St. Pius X Seminary, Mumbai and was ordained priest in 1990 in Vasai for the Archdiocese of Bombay.

After his studies, he served as Assistant Parish Priest at Nandakhal, Vasai he served the Mumbai archdiocese in various capacities.

He was appointed Bishop of Amravati in 2012. As Bishop, he has been in charge of Catholic Education in the Western Region Catholic Bishops’ Council.
