Chandigarh:  A newly built church in Baddi in Solan district of Himachal Pradesh was dedicated to St. Teresa of Kolkata, within hours of the saint being canonized by Pope Francis in the Vatican on Sept 4.

Bishop Ignatius Mascarenhas of Simla-Chandigarh blessed and inaugurated the new church in honour of Mother Teresa at 4.30 pm, soon after the canonization at 2 pm.

Hundreds of faithful from most of the neighbouring parishes gathered at the new church for the event. The Holy Eucharist was concelebrated by the bishop and many priests. In his homily, the local ordinary explained about the life of Mother Teresa and how she humbly rendered her service to people of all communities both at home and abroad.

The people of Baddi are very happy that the parish is named after Mother Teresa as the Missionaries of Charity nuns were the first religious order to open a centre here to serve the hundreds of people in need of care and love.

The prelate said he is delighted that the church’s inauguration coincided with the canonization of its patron saint.
