Film festival on St Teresa begins in Shillong
The festival opened with Mother Teresa and Me, a film made by Gautam Lewis who was raised by Saint Teresa in Kolkata.
Organized by the World Catholic Association for Communication's India chapter, the Mother Teresa International Film Festival (MTIFF), 2016, kicked off in Kolkata on August 26. The festival, which celebrates the canonization of Teresa, will end in Shillong on Sept 9 and then move on to Jowai where it will be held from September 14 to 17.
Twenty films, documentaries and short films showcasing the global icon's pioneering work will be screened at the festival which will travel to different cities in India and to 50 other countries.
The Shillong leg of MTIFF, 2016, was inaugurated by governor V Shanmuganathan in the presence of a host of dignitaries, including principal secretary to the governor MS Rao, East Khasi Hills DC PS Dkhar, Archbishop of Shillong Archdiocese Most Reverend Dominic Jala, London-based photographer and filmmaker Gautam Lewis and Sister Lipika of the Missionaries of Charity.
Addressing the inaugural function, Shanmuganathan said Saint Teresa embodied love, peace, strength, hope and service for the world. "She served the destitute, lepers, abandoned children, old people, the poorest of the poor and the downtrodden. Because she understood their pain, she was a solace, a helping hand and a source of comfort to them," he said.
The governor observed that in a world where people identify themselves by the power they hold, or the money they possess, Saint Teresa's greatness lay in her identification of herself with the love of God. The inaugural function was a colourful event with students of city schools putting up performances.
The festival opened with Mother Teresa and Me, a film made by Gautam Lewis who was raised by Saint Teresa in Kolkata after his parents abandoned him when he was an infant.
