High Court stays Lutheran bishops' consecration

High Court stays Lutheran bishops' consecration

The secretary of the Church said the order comes after he moved the High Court with an appeal against the earlier order of single judge.

Chennai:  A Division Bench of Madras HC has stayed the proposed consecration service of the new Bishop of Tamil Evangelical Lutheran Church (TELC), scheduled for Monday at Tranquber in Nagapttinam district of Tamil Nadu.

TELC Secretary D Ravindran released the copy of the Madras HC order to the media here and said the order comes after he moved the High Court with an appeal against the earlier order of single judge.

The earlier order directed the TELC Nagapttinam district Collector and Superintendent of police to provide adequate protection for the proposed consecration service and also for a public meeting at Porayar tomorrow.

Admitting the writ appeal filed by Mr Ravindran, Justice S Manikumar and Justice K B K Vasuki had submitted that the single judge order of the court dated May 8, 2014, did not go deep into in the contention made by the applicant E D Charles, who fabricated a document and produced it before the court stating that S Edwin Jayakumar will assume office as the Bishop of TELC on May 19.

Hence, the writ appeal of Mr Ravindran was allowed and his plea that the Division Bench of the High Court stay the proposed consecration service as also a public meeting at Porayar.
