The remains of the graves at the cemetery of the St Joseph’s Metropolitan Cathedral bordering the road will be relocated to vaults.
After the relocation, the Airport-MLA Hostel road stretch, which is 9.56 km long, would be widened.
On the first day alone, the mortal remains in the five graves were shifted to the vaults after ceremonial rituals were performed in the presence of family members.
The road widening works had hit a roadblock following the petition filed by Pharmacy Council Employees’ Union against the construction of vaults.
“Nearly 10 million rupees have been spent toward construction of the vaults, which has been met by the government and the church together. A total of 22.8 cents of land had been given for road widening and the government has allocated 28 cents behind the cemetery for the construction of vaults,’’ said Fr. Pius Lawrence, assistant vicar of the Cathedral.
The mortal remains of various graves are shifted to a coffin before the rituals are performed by the priest.
The mortal remains of ten graves are expected to be shifted in a day. In the cemetery, the remains of those from nearly eight parishes including Vellayambalam, Thrikkannapuram and Neyyattinkara are also buried.
“The church talked with the families and convinced them about the need for the relocation. The relocation is being done by experts. Burials in future will be only in the vaults and the families who have a family vault on the ground can conduct burials there,” said Fr Lawrence.
