Hindi broadcaster gets Vatican Radio award
She holds Master’s degree in Hindi and German from Bombay University.
Juliet Christopher is from the Hindi language service of Vatican Radio’s South Asian Section.
Archbishop Claudio Maria Celli, President of the Pontifical Council for Social Communications, was the chief guest on the occasion and gave away the awards on Sept. 28, the Feast of St. Gabriel, Patron of the Vatican Radio.
Jesuit Father Andrea Koprowski, program director of Vatican Radio, said that Christopher has been working in the Hindi language of Vatican Radio’s South Asian Section for the last 25 years.
Highlighting her dedication, professionalism and deep sense of Christian values, he said that these qualities help her to explain the teaching of the pope and of the Church with considerable proficiency.
Christopher not only contributes to the audio, but also to the website and the newsletter in Hindi, which are sent daily to more than 4,000 subscribers.
Jesuit Father Federico Lombardi, director General of Vatican Radio, said that besides being a good journalist, Christopher is also a good teacher of Indian dance.
He recalled her dance around the central altar at St. Peter’s Basilica on the occasion of the Synod of Asia in 1998 and added that she is probably the only woman in the world who had done that.
Christopher was born and brought up in Indore, Madhya Pradesh.
She is a disciple of late Fr. George Proksch, SVD, one of the pioneers of inculturation in India and the founder of Gyan Ashram in Mumbai.
She holds Master’s degree in Hindi and German from Bombay University.
Besides Christopher, Cecilia de Avolio Malak from the Spanish section received the awards from the Program departments.
The other two awardees are from Vatican Radio’s administrative department - Laurentia Savi and Carla Goats.
