Kochi:  St. Mary’s Orthodox Cathedral, near the Ernakulam boat jetty, is celebrating the 90th year of its consecration.

Then a little church, it was consecrated on October 6, 1926. Considering the increase in the number of the faithful reaching the church, it was expanded in 1962.

Mureekkal Jacob Kathanar was appointed the first vicar of the church, said a statement here on Thursday.

The idea of building a house of prayer for members of the Orthodox Church in Ernakulam city was conceived as the faithful had to go to Karingachira in those days to attend church services. Some of the faithful got together to buy a plot of land near the boat jetty in 1922.

Those involved in the works included the first Chief Justice of the High Court of Kerala, K.T. Koshy; advocate P. V. Philip; and editor of Deepam, T. Thomas.

Kochi witnessed rapid growth over the years and the church near the boat jetty was raised to the status of a cathedral in 2001.

The 90th anniversary celebrations were inaugurated on April 3 by Catholicos Baselios Marthoma Paulose II.
