Caritas exhibits organic agricultural practices at Kissan Sammelan

The Caritas team discussed with over 600 farmers from Ajmer about their problems.

 

Alwar:  Caritas India exhibited its organic agricultural practices theKissanSammelan at Holawas village in Rajasthan’sAlwar district on April 17.KrishiVigyan Kendra (KVK)Bansur organized the eventthat brought together all stakeholders in agriculture:farmers, innovators, scientistsand government officials.

The Caritas team discussed with over 600 farmers from Ajmer about their problems, and provided information regarding organic farming and the ongoing Ankur Project in Rajasthan.

Rajyavardhan Singh Rathore, Minister of State for Information and Broadcasting, was the Chief Guest of the event. The minister encouraged the farmers to take up new technologies and concepts for more production.

While visiting the stalls, Rathore enquired about Caritas work and areas of intervention. Caritas officials briefed him about Ankur project and SAF-BIN’s works related to organic farming and livelihood. The farmers of Ankur project also cited their experiences. The minister showed interest in Caritas works and shared his plan for a new project in the area and planned a meeting to discuss further. He asked the Sarpanch of Holawas village to guide Caritas in their area so that a survey can be done to identify major issues and how Caritas can help in solving those issues.

Apart from the minister,scientists and officials, over 300 farmers interacted with the Caritas team and had a view of the works implemented by Caritas India.

Being the second largest herd of livestock amongst Indian states, farmers at the sammelan showed interest in cultivation of Azolla, which is very beneficial for milking cattle.

Principal scientist from KVK insisted that farmers adopt new and modern technologies for agriculture and focus on organic agriculture and water conservation.

KVK hopes the exchange of ideas at the event will ultimately lead to developing necessary strategies to combat challenges faced in the agriculture sector of Rajasthan like frequent droughts, low productivity, deteriorating soil health and lack of integrated farming approach.
