Bishop Enrico Dal Covolo, vice chancellor of Pontifical Lateran University, wanted the institute to start such doctoral programs. He said this while addressing the faculty of the institute at the end of his two-week-long tour of India that concluded last Sunday.
The top official of the university encouraged the Institute to begin doctoral programs in the theology of consecrated life and reminded that this possibility is already granted to the institute by its very incorporation to the Lateran University.
Father Xavier E. Manavath, director of the institute, said his theology center is among five privileged institutes in the world incorporated to Pontifical Lateran University that can offer doctoral degrees. It is the only such institute in India, he said.
"It is a matter of great significance that Bishop Enrico has chosen this Year of Consecrated Life as the right occasion to visit Sanyasa Institute of Consecrated Life and encourage it for its further growth and development," said Father Manavath
The Institute was opened in 2002 as a theological and formational resource center for Consecrated Life in the Church. Sanyasa is one among the four similar institutes of Consecrated life, run by the Claretian Missionaries. The others are in Rome, Madrid and Manila.
During the six days visit to the institute, the bishop addressed the students and the teaching faculty. He appreciated the Institute for its identity as the only institute in India for the study and reflection on the theology of consecrated life.
Among the nearly 4,000 students in the Pontifical Lateran University, a good number of them are from India. Nearly 40 theological institutes and colleges from all over the world are affiliated or aggregated to the Lateran University.
