Saint Joseph the Worker
Saint Joseph the Worker
On
May 1, 1955, Pope Pius XII granted a public audience to the Catholic
Association of Italian Workers, whose members had gathered in Saint
Peter's Square to celebrate the tenth anniversary of their society. They
were solemnly renewing, in common, their promise of loyalty to the
social doctrine of the Church, and it was on that day that the Pope
instituted the liturgical feast of May 1st, in honor of Saint
Joseph the Worker. He assured his audience and the working people of
the world: You have beside you a shepherd, a defender and a father in
Saint Joseph, the carpenter whom God in His providence chose to be the
virginal father of Jesus and the head of the Holy Family. He is silent
but has excellent hearing, and his intercession is very powerful over
the Heart of the Saviour.
We
can conclude from the role for which Saint Joseph was chosen and named
by Heaven that he was a man of tried virtue and consummate holiness. No
other mortal man would ever hold a higher office. Saint Joseph surpassed
all the Saints of the Old Law in sanctity; in him the virtue of his
ancestors reached its culmination and perfection. Like Abraham, he was a
man of faith and obedience; like Isaac, one of prayer and vision; like
Jacob, he was patient and self-sacrificing; like Joseph of Egypt, his
chastity was inviolable. And like David, of whom he is the direct
descendant, he is a royal intercessor according to the heart of God. Ite ad Joseph — Go to Joseph; to
Joseph of Egypt, the pharaoh told the needy to go for assistance to
receive the grain that would save their lives. To the new Joseph, the just man to
whom the Son of God Himself was subject as to a father, all Christians
can go with confidence, and he will see to their spiritual and temporal
needs with paternal goodness.

China scoffs at predictions of growth in Christianity
China scoffs at predictions of growth in Christianity
Estimate is 'obviously an exaggeration' says official.
| St. Ignatius Cathedral, Shanghai |
"The estimate is unscientific and obviously an exaggeration. China advocates religious freedom and we are not against people's right to believe in any religion. In this respect, an estimate of the number of Christians makes little sense," an official told the Global Times on condition of anonymity.
The Christian community in China is estimated to grow to 160 million by 2025 and the figure will exceed 247 million by 2030, according to Yang Fenggang, director of the Center on Religion and Chinese Society at Purdue University in Indiana.
Yang told the Global Times via e-mail Thursday that his conclusions are based on annual growth rate calculated by available figures, and the result is only the probability of future growth trends, rather than an absolute certainty.
"Based on the Pew Research Center's Report of Global Christianity, the Christian population in China took up some 5 percent of total population in 2010 [67 million], while it is widely recognized that there were 3 million Catholics and 3 million Protestants around 1980, which would make an annual growth rate of around 10 percent," Yang said.
Yang added that he used a lower growth rate by counting in statistics from 1950 to 2010 when there were restrictions on religious activity during the Cultural Revolution (1966-76).
There were only 1 million Protestants and 3 million Catholics in 1949, he claimed. China's population was approximately 541 million at that period of time.
He pointed out that official statistics are often underestimated, but the development of Christianity in China is often exaggerated by the authorities, which has resulted in many strict yet unnecessary restrictions and may turn out to be contrary to maintaining social stability.
"Scientific studies must be in line with the truth without over or underestimations to mislead senior officials as well as the public," Yang noted.
In 2010, the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences (CASS) put the number of Protestants at some 23 million, according to a survey on religion in China. The figure was about 1.8 percent of the total population.
Another report from the Institute of Social Science Survey at Peking University showed that the percentage rose slightly to 1.9 percent in 2012, indicating 26 million Protestants in China.
Shen Guiping, a religious studies expert at the Central Institute of Socialism, told the Global Times previously that Yang and Pew's estimates may not be accurate, as they have made a looser definition of who is a practicing Christian.
CASS usually identifies Christians if they attend religious activities weekly, Shen said, while the other estimates may have taken other elements into account, such as attendance at illegal religious activities.
"Those estimates reflect that research fellows or institutes intend to encourage the development of Christianity in China," Shen said.

Obama joins in tributes to new papal saints
Obama joins in tributes to new papal saints
'Their work and testimony did not just change the Catholic Church, but the whole world'.
“Pope John XXIII articulated powerful roles for the Church in the cause of global peace and justice, and by convening the Second Vatican Council he revolutionized not only aspects of worship but the Catholic Church’s relationship with other faith communities,” President Obama said in his statement.
“Pope John Paul II helped inspire the Solidarity movement in Poland, a movement that spread and eventually helped to end communism in Eastern Europe, and he spoke out forcefully against apartheid in South Africa and genocide in Rwanda. He had a special rapport with young people, drawing many of them to the Church’s work and teachings,” the president added.
The canonization of the two Popes also gave President Obama a chance to pick up on the recent meeting he had with Pope Francis in the Vatican: “We celebrate these Saints and the leadership of His Holiness Pope Francis, and we look forward to continuing to work with Pope Francis and Catholics around the world to advance peace and justice for all people.”

Chinese authorities demolish sanctuary of Wenzhou church
Chinese authorities demolish sanctuary of Wenzhou church
Sources say some church staff have also been detained.
| Demolition begins on the main sanctuary of Sanjiang Church in Wenzhou |
Since early April, congregants had stood watch over the structure amid fears that authorities would remove a giant cross on the top of the main sanctuary, as local sources say the government had issued orders for the removal of 14 other crosses from churches in and around the area.
“Roads leading to the Sanjiang Church were blocked this morning. Armed police and officers from the Special Task Force were dispatched to the district,” said a Protestant source who asked not to be named.
The source added that security forces have also made several arrests.
“At least five Sanjiang Church leaders as well as Xu Kede, a pastor at the nearby Tengqiao Church who visited Sanjiang over the weekend, have now been detained,” the source said.
Since last week, at least 3,000 congregants took up residence in Sanjiang Church to prevent authorities from removing the sanctuary’s cross.
Church officials had been negotiating with local authorities, who argued that part of the complex had been built illegally on farmland it did not own. The church agreed to remove four storeys of the six-storey annex by April 24.
In response, they began removing four of the six storeys of a church annex behind the main sanctuary. However, a further requirement to remove the church’s cross because it was “too big” scuttled the dialogue and drew congregants to the complex to defend the “symbol of their faith,” the source said.
In retaliation, local authorities began detaining church staff and last week prosecuted one of the church’s pastors for illegally occupying the farmland on which part of the church stands.
The source added that authorities also threatened local businesspeople who supported the church with closure of their offices if they continued to support the congregation.
Another source who also spoke on condition of anonymity said the main aim of the authorities seemed to have been the removal of the cross.
“Their real aim was to remove the cross.”
News of the demolition follows a report last week of the growth of Christianity in China, which led a Central Party member to deny the report.
In response to reports that Christianity could become the majority religion in the country, the party’s former head of religious affairs, Ye Xiaowen, told state-run Global Times that the claim was exaggerated.
“It is completely meaningless to predict how many people might believe in Christianity in China in the future,” said Ye Xiaowen.
