The death of Cardinal Lourdusamy

Vatican City, 2 June 2014 (VIS) – The Holy Father has sent a telegram of condolences to Archbishop Anthony Anandarayar of Ponticherry and Cuddalore, India, for the death last night in Rome of Cardinal Simon D. Lourdusamy, aged 90, prefect emeritus of the Congregation for the Oriental Churches and archbishop emeritus of Bangalore, India. In his text, the Pope expresses his gratitude for the cardinal's “priestly life spent in spreading the Gospel first in India and subsequently in service to the Universal Church” and commends his noble soul to the Lord.

Cardinal Lourdusamy's funeral will be held on 5 June at 11.30 a.m. at the altar of the Vatican Basilica, and will be presided by Cardinal Angelo Sodano, dean of the College of Cardinals. At the end of the Eucharist, Pope Francis will administer the rites of “Ultima Commendatio” and “Valedictio”.

Thai Buddhist abbots charged with child abuse

Bangkok:  Thai police on Wednesday said they had charged five defrocked Buddhist abbots with sexually abusing eight boys at monasteries around the northern city of Chiang Mai.

The abuse was discovered after police rescued one boy from the abuse ring last year, police said, adding all the children involved were under 15 years of age.

"Four of the abbots volunteered to disrobe, but one denied the charges and was forcibly defrocked," Major General Prachuab Wongsuk, of the northern police region, told AFP.

He said police found alcohol and pornography during a search of living quarters at five monasteries.

Police believe the abbots were acting together and Prachuab predicted that more monks would be arrested soon.

Those charged face a maximum of 20 years in jail if convicted. Monks in Thailand, where some 95 percent of the population are practising Buddhists, have been hit by a series of scandals, with local media reporting cases of drug-taking, drinking, gambling and visiting prostitutes.

In September, authorities seized nearly $800,000 worth of assets, including a Porsche and a Mercedes-Benz, from a monk who was defrocked for a controversial trip in a private jet and who was also accused of fathering a child by an underage girl a decade earlier. AFP

Pope's date with Israel and Palestine presidents set

Three will meet and pray together on June 8.

Vatican City:  "We will soon decide on a date and then we’l discuss the content," the Custodian of the Holy Land, Pierbattista Pizzaballa, had told SIR, the Italian Episcopate’s religious information service. Francis asked Pizzaballa to organise the prayer meeting in the Vatican, which he announced at the end of the mass he celebrated in Bethlehem last Sunday. The official date has now been set and was announced by the Vatican spokesman, Fr. federico Lombardi: it will take place on Sunday 8 June (the feast of Pentecost) in the Vatican.

As is known, the prayer meeting between the Pope, the Palestinian president Abu Mazen and Israeli president Shimon Peres must take place before the latter’s mandate comes to an end.

The purpose of this meeting is not to attempt mediation or discuss new road maps: Francis wants to keep the encounter strictly religious.

“The purpose of the meeting will be to pray not to mediate,” Francis said on the return flight from the Holy Land to Rome. “The two presidents and I will only meet to pray and I believe that prayer is important and doing this helps. Then they will go home. There will be a rabbi, a Muslim and me. I have asked the Custody of the Holy land to deal with the practical side of things,” Francis went on to say.

As the Pope confirmed in another part of the interview, the meeting was supposed to take place in the Holy Land but did not because of “logistical” problems.

When he made the surprise announcement about the invitation extended to the two presidents last Sunday in Bethlehem, Francis said: "In this place where the Prince of Peace was born, I desire to invite you, President Mahmoud Abbas, and President Shimon Peres, to raise together with me an intense prayer to God for the gift of peace. And I offer my house in the Vatican to host you in this encounter of prayer."

"Everyone wants peace, many people build it every day with small gestures, many suffer patiently and bear the fatigue of many attempts to build it. And everyone - especially those who are at the service of their people - have a duty to be the instruments and builders of peace, above all in prayer."

"Building peace is hard, but living without peace is a torment. All men and women of this earth and of the whole world are asking us to bring before God their ardent desire for peace.”

Yesterday, when Francis went through the various moments of his pilgrimage in the Holy Land, Francis mentioned the prayer meeting and referred to Abu Mazen and Peres as “men of peace and builders of peace.”

Addressing the many faithful present at the General Audience, the Pope said: “I ask you, do not leave us alone: pray, pray so that the Lord may give us peace, give us peace in that blessed land!” In an article published on the Time website yesterday, Christopher J. Hale wrote: “Francis’ successful overture was especially remarkable considering the failed efforts by the United States earlier this spring to get both sides to the table to begin negotiated peace talks.

However, this could be the boost that Secretary of State John Kerry needed to revive this peace process, which has been largely dormant for the past four years.”

Kerala awaits Javadekar’s decision on Western Ghats

Thiruvananthapuram:  People of Kerala are eagerly waiting to see what decision federal Environment Minister Prakash Javadekar takes on reports prepared by the Madhav Gadgil and K Kasturirangan panels on how to conserve the Western Ghats.

Javadekar recently announced that a decision would be taken at a meeting in New Delhi on June 4.

Kasturirangan was roped in by the environment and forests ministry to head a 10-member High-Level Working Group (HLWG) to advise the federal government on the recommendations made by the Gadgil-led experts panel on how to conserve the ecologically fragile Western Ghats.

The Western Ghats is a Unesco recognised natural heritage site comprising a contiguous forested mountain range, which stretches from Kerala to southern Gujarat.

The panel report has faced opposition in several states in the Western Ghats belt, including Kerala and Goa.

The Western Ghats Ecology Expert Panel (WGEEP), also known as the Gadgil Commission, submitted its report to the federal government on August 31, 2011.

But following huge resentment over the report from six states, including Kerala, the then Congress-led government appointed a panel headed by noted space scientist Kasturirangan to study the Gadgil report.

Following the Kasturirangan report, the ministry in November 2013 came out with an order which laid out five conditions applicable to 123 villages in Kerala.

The order prohibits mining and setting up of thermal plants, and restricts construction of buildings to less than 20,000sqm. It also says no township project in these villages can exceed 50 hectares, and industries in the red category cannot be set up in these villages.

Kerala was also unhappy with Kasturirangan’s report.

After public outcry from the Catholic Church, residents of Idukki and other hill districts, a notification was issued by the forests ministry in March that accepted the directions to keep agricultural land, plantations and habitations out of 123 villages that were classified by the HLWG as ecologically sensitive areas (ESAs).

Through this notification, the total area in Kerala that would come under the Western Ghats came down from 13,108sqkm to 9,993sqkm.

This includes 9,107sqkm of forests and 886sqkm of rocky areas and meadows where there is no human habitation.

The Kerala State Biodiversity Board (KSBB), which was entrusted with the job of preparing the fresh demarcation as directed by the forests ministry, however, appears to be puzzled with Javedekar’s statement.

“The matter is sub-judice and the issue is being looked into by the Green Tribunal. Of the six states through which the Western Bhats passes (Maharashtra, Gujarat, Karnataka, Goa, Tamil Nadu and Kerala), when the Gadgil Committee report came, three states were ruled by the BJP and all of them opposed it.

“Hence, the Kasturirangan Committee was appointed,” said KSBB member-secretary KP Laladhas. While the Congress and its allies and the Left have been opposing both the reports, the BJP’s Kerala unit has been batting for implementing the Gadgil report.

The BJP on Sunday got a new partner on the issue when the Church of South India, in a letter read out in all its churches, said all people should speak out about their concerns on the protection of environment.

Goa wants Pope for St. Francis Xavier's exposition

Panaji:  Goa, where Catholics comprise nearly 30 percent of the state's 1.4 million people, wants to invite Pope Francis to the exposition of Spanish saint Francis Xavier, scheduled to be held later this year.

The external affairs ministry would be requested to invite Pope Francis for the exposition, union Minister of State for Tourism Shripad Naik, elected from Goa, said Saturday.

"If the Church makes the request to invite the Pope to Goa, we will help speed up the process with the external affairs ministry," Naik said.

Every 10 years, the remains of the missionary saint, also called the "Patron Saint of Goa", are lowered from the silver casket in which they are permanently stored, for viewing by the faithful.

Earlier, the body was on permanent display. However, after church authorities noticed deterioration of the corpse they decided to have it viewed only once every 10 years.

St. Francis Xavier, who hailed from Navarra in Spain, was sent by the then Pope as an apostolic nuncio (ecclesiastical diplomat) in 1541 at the request of the king of Portugal, after explorers led by Afonso de Albuquerque captured the city of Goa.

He was also responsible for initiating the process for the Spanish Inquisition in Goa, which saw tenets of Christianity imposed by force and violence on Goan subjects.

After his death in 1552 in Shanchuan, China, his body was first ferried to Malacca in Portugal. In 1637, it was placed in the newly-built Basilica of Bom Jesus, built by the Jesuits in Goa.

Believers regard it as a miracle that the body has survived for nearly 500 years, while sceptics argue that the mortal remains of the saint have been embalmed which has ensured its survival.

A festival is held every year Dec 3, with nearly a million believers paying homage, some even walking hundreds of kilometres to the church complex in Old Goa.

Andhra Bishops support development of new states

They assured the support of the Catholic Church and Christian Community for just, inclusive, equitable and sustainable development of the new states.

Secunderabad:  The top body of Catholic bishops in Andhra Pradesh assured the support of the Christian Community for the sustainable development of the new states of Seemandhra and Telangana that came into being Monday.

The Andhra Pradesh Bishops’ Council (APBC), which is an apex body of the Catholic Church in both the states of Telangana and Seemandhra, promised prays for Telugu people to realize a “Bangaru Telangana” and “Swarna Andhra Pradesh” with prosperity, peace and harmony.

Their statement assured the support of the Catholic Church and Christian Community for just, inclusive, equitable and sustainable development of the new states.

A delegation of APBC including bishops and priests met the would-be Chief Ministers of both the states with view to extent their support and assure prays.

In a memorandum both the would-be chief ministers were reminded that the Church, though a minority, contributes over 25 percent of charitable services to the society in the fields of education, health care and social welfare, particularly to the poorer and weaker sections.

"To better these services, both the Chief Minister-elects were requested by APBC to take action on the urgent issues of the Church-run Educational Institutions and the concerns of the Christian Minority Community," a press release from APBC said.

A delegation of APBC May 21 met K. Chandrasekhar Rao, president of Telangana Rashtra Samiti (TRS) in Hyderabad, and congratulated him on being chosen as the first chief minister of Telangana.

The delegation was led by APBC secretary Bishop Poola Anthony of Kurnool. Others in delegation included Bishop G. Joji of Nalgonda, Bishop Udumala Bala of Warangal and APBC deputy secretary Father Anthoniraj Thumma.

Delegation’s appointment with Nara Chandrababu Naidu, President of Telugu Desam Party (TDP) and Chief Minister–elect of residuary Andhra Pradesh, was cancelled. APBC official Father Anthoniraj Thumma other leading priests greeted him the next day on behalf of APBC at TDP party office in Hyderabad.

7. சார்ஸ் (SARS) மற்றும் மெர்ஸ் (MERS) நோய்களுக்கு மருந்து கண்டுபிடிப்பு

மே,31,2014. உலக அறிவியலாளர்களுடன் இணைந்த சுவிஸ் ஆய்வாளர்கள் கொரோனா (Coronavirus) என்ற ஒரு வகை கிருமிக்கான புதிய தடுப்பு மருந்தினை கண்டுபிடித்துள்ளனர்.

கொரோனா என்ற கிருமியினால் ஏற்படும் சார்ஸ் (SARS) மற்றும் மெர்ஸ் (MERS) ஆகிய நோய்கள் மனிதனின் மேல் மற்றும் கீழ் சுவாச தடங்களைத் தாக்கி பாதிப்பை ஏற்படுத்துகின்றது.

இதனால் 2002ம் ஆண்டு உலக முழுவதும் இந்த நோய் தாக்கப்பட்டு 800க்கும் மேற்பட்ட மக்கள் உயிரிழந்துள்ளனர். இதனையடுத்து சவுதி அரேபியாவில் சுமார் 636 பேர் பாதிக்கப்பட்டதுடன், 193 பேர் பலியாகினர்.

இந்நிலையில் இந்நோயை போக்குவதற்கான மருந்தை சுவீடன் நாட்டை சார்ந்த எட்வர்ட் என்ற அறிவியலாளரும் சுவிசை சேர்ந்த வால்கோர் என்ற ஆய்வாளரும் தங்களது ஆராய்ச்சி குழுவினருடன் இணைந்து, k22 என்ற மருத்தை கண்டுபிடித்துள்ளனர்.

மேலும் இந்த மருந்து கொரோனா வைரஸ் கிருமியை தாக்கிக் கொல்லும் வல்லமை படைத்தது என அவர்கள் கூறியுள்ளனர்.
