Pope to meet relatives of Israeli hostages and Palestinians suffering in Gaza

Next Wednesday, Pope Francis will meet separately with several relatives of Israeli hostages held in Gaza and with family members of Palestinians suffering from the Israel-Hamas war.

By Vatican News

The Director of the Holy See Press Office, Matteo Bruni, announced on Friday that Pope Francis will hold a pair of separate encounters on Wednesday, 22 November, on the sidelines of the General Audience.

Responding to journalists' questions, Mr. Bruni said: "Pope Francis will meet separately with a group of relatives of Israelis held hostage in Gaza and a group of family members of Palestinians suffering from the conflict in Gaza."

He added that the meetings are "of an exclusively humanitarian nature" and aim to express Pope Francis' "spiritual closeness to the suffering of each individual".

"As he stated at the end of last Sunday's Angelus, 'Every human being, whether Christian, Jewish, Muslim, of any people and religion, every human being is sacred, precious in the eyes of God, and has the right to live in peace," said Mr. Bruni.

Archbishop Mourad: Two-state solution only way to end 'hell' in Holy Land

Archbishop Mourad: Two-state solution only way to end 'hell' in Holy Land

The newly-appointed Archbishop of Homs, Syria, Archbishop Julian Yacoub Mourad, reiterates that the two-state solution for Israel and Palestine is the only way toward a just and sustainable peace in the entire region, decrying the political agendas of international powers.

By Lisa Zengarini

“The evil spirit, at this time, is pushing the world into hell and we really live in hell,” said Archbishop Jacques Mourad of Homs, Syria, in an impassioned plea for a just peace in the Holy Land and all the Middle East.

“If you want to see Hell, you have to come to Lebanon, Syria and now especially to the Holy Land.”

The Syrian-Catholic monk, who was appointed by Pope Francis at the helm of the Archdiocese and was ordained a bishop on 3 March 2023, became internationally known in 2015 when terrorists of the so-called Islamic State kidnapped him from his Mar Elian monastery in Syria and held him hostage for several months.

In a comment sent to Fides agency on the current dramatic events in the region, Archbishop Mourad didn’t mince his words.

Innocent people living hell

“We witness the atrocious death of thousands of innocent people in a few days, the bombing of places of care and suffering, those very places which should be the last strongholds of humanity,” he said. “We see hostages violently abducted from their homes, humanitarian organizations struck in their action to bring relief to bodies and souls hurt by war, and international institutions which can only show their helplessness because no decision really seems to be in their hands.”

In his testimony, the Archbishop of Homs recalled that the humanitarian situation continues to be dire in war- and earthquake-stricken Syria.

“When I travel around my diocese, every day I see elderly people and children, men and women, looking for something to eat in the garbage. When the cold weather begins, none of them will have the means and resources to heat their homes. This is hell,” he said, pointing to the responsibilities of “insatiable powers” pursuing “insatiable interests” in the region.

Evil cannot be eradicated by evil

Regarding the war ravaging the Holy Land, Archbishop Mourad decried the “inhumane” violence perpetrated by both sides.

“It is not humane for Palestinians to kill Israelis in kibbutzim. And it is not humane for Israelis to bomb churches and hospitals,” he lamented. “Evil cannot be eradicated by evil.”

“We were shocked and distressed to see bombs dropped on hospitals in Homs and Aleppo. Today, this is happening again in Gaza.”

“He who wants to eliminate the evil that destroys bodies and souls must first eliminate the evil of hearts, and the purification of hearts always comes after justice, not by force”, the Syrian prelate stressed.

Two-state solution only way toward peace

He insisted on the two-state solution advocated worldwide, including Pope Francis, as both Israelis and Palestinians, he said, have a right to have a State of their own.

“Palestinians have the right to live in freedom in their own land. This land is also theirs. Since 1948, they have lived as refugees in camps scattered across the Middle East, and today, the same is true for millions of Syrians.”

Archbishop Mourad further noted that Palestinians, whose suffering has been ignored “for decades”, are victims of violence “not only from the Israeli army but also from other countries”, including Arab countries, that have their own agendas and reject “the very idea of seeing two peoples living together in two States.”

“If the world tolerates and justifies this, it confirms injustice and takes away hope,” he said, warning that this unresolved question concerns the future of the entire world.

Long-term, worldwide effects of the war

“We are not only responsible for what is happening today in war zones; we will be asked to account for the future at a global level, with all the consequences of war in terms of mass migration, the creation of new refugee camps, and the depletion of vital resources such as water,” he said.

In this regard, Archbishop Mourad welcomed Pope Francis' upcoming visit to Dubai (UAE) for COP-28. "This," he noted, "also shows the Church's concern for the climate and environmental emergency and the life and wellbeing of people and the world."

Archbishop Soueif: risk of mass migration

Archbishop Youssef Soueif of Tripoli, Lebanon, made similar remarks recently to Aid to the Church in Need (ACN).

Speaking during a visit to the international headquarters of the Pontifical Foundation, Archbishop Soueif emphasized the need for a just and lasting solution for both Israel and Palestine, warning that the conflict could drag on and trigger an open war in the region.

Pointing to the fact that Lebanon has more refugees than natives, including 2.5 million Syrians and half a million Palestinians, the Lebanese prelate highlighted the risk of mass emigration, which “could also affect Europe if the crisis is not resolved.”

Pope Francis: War is "mother of all poverty"

And on Friday, Pope Francis again turned his thoughts to the many wars ravaging several parts of the world.

“War is the ‘mother of all poverty,’ especially affecting civilians and families”, the Pope recalled in a post on X (formerly Twitter), calling for ongoing efforts “so that #Peace may prevail as a gift of God and the result of our commitment to justice and dialogue.”

Pope: Asia Bibi, modern-day martyr

Pope: Asia Bibi, modern-day martyr

Speaking to participants in a conference on sainthood, Pope Francis says that “no period has been devoid of martyrs, including our own day.”

By Joseph Tulloch

“When God calls an individual, it is always for the good of all.”

That’s how Pope Francis started an address on Thursday morning to participants in a Vatican-run conference on ‘The Communal Dimension of Sanctity.’

In his speech, the Pope discussed three important aspects of holiness – its power to unify, its place in the family, and martyrdom.

Asia Bibi, modern-day martyr

Martyrdom, Pope Francis said, is a “powerful model” of saintliness, of which "we have many examples throughout the history of the Church.”

“There is no period which has been devoid of martyrs,” he stressed, “including our own day.”

“We think that these martyrs do not exist, but let us think about a case of Christian life lived in continuous martyrdom, the case of Asia Bibi.”

Bibi, a Pakistani Catholic sentenced to death for blasphemy, was imprisoned for many years, eventually being released and moving to Canada.

“Nearly nine years of Christian witness!” Pope Francis underlined. "There are many, many like her, who testify to faith and charity.”

A unifying force

Holiness, Pope Francis stressed, is a vocation “which is fulfilled first and foremost in charity.” It thus “unites us with our brothers and sisters, and so is not merely a personal event, but a community one.”

“When God calls an individual,” the Pope noted, “it is always for the good of all, as in the case of Abraham and Moses, Peter and Paul.”

The only legitimate response to Jesus’ love, he said, is to immediately desire to share it with others, “like Matthew, who, as soon as Jesus calls him, invites his friends to meet the Messiah”, or Paul, who, “having met the Risen One, becomes the apostle to the nations.”

Familial sanctity

The final subject of Pope Francis’s address was holiness as it occurs in families.

Although this sort of saintliness is “evident above all in the Holy Family of Nazareth”, the Pope said, “the Church offers us many other examples”, in particular “holy couples, in which each of the spouses was an instrument of salvation of the other.”

The holiness of a married couple, Pope Francis stressed, is not simply the sum total of the sanctity of each individual; rather, each one’s holiness contributes to multiplying that of their partner.

As an example of this sort of holiness, Pope Francis presented the Polish couple Josef and Wiktoria Ulma and their seven children. They attempted to save Jewish families from the Nazis by hiding them in their home, but were eventually all murdered by the Nazis.

This Polish family, Pope Francis said, “reminds us that sanctification is a community journey, to be made in pairs, not alone. Always in community.”

Vatican launches sustainable mobility programme 'Ecological Conversion 2023'

The Governorate of Vatican City State announces the launch of a series of energy-saving initiatives and strategies to safeguard the environment in the framework of the Pope's Laudato si' and Laudate Deum, including introducing a state car fleet to reduce CO2 emissions through a partnership with the Volkswagen Group.

By Vatican News

The Vatican City State has been committed for many years to promoting sustainable development through ecological policies to safeguard the environment and provide energy-saving strategies.

Applying the principles of the Encyclical Letter Laudato si' and the Apostolic Exhortation Laudate Deum, it is among the first States in the world to pursue sustainability projects by seeking innovative solutions that will help change the way of working while taking care of the protection of the 'Common Home' by adopting projects that, also through the use of reliable and eco-friendly technologies, will concretely reduce the impact of human activity on the environment.

The ratification of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change and the Paris Agreements are the bridge between environmental policies and the Holy Father's indications and recommendations.

The Governorate is committed to achieving climate neutrality through the responsible use of natural resources, the implementation of energy efficiency projects, the upgrading of its technological assets, sustainable mobility, diversification and sourcing of cleaner or alternative energy products for transport, waste disposal and the development of concrete future reforestation projects.

Electric vehicles in the Vatican car fleet

Achieving neutrality will require investments in technological facilities using renewable energies, offsetting emissions produced in one area and reducing them in another, and above all, promoting electric and hybrid mobility. For this reason, the Governorate has launched a sustainable mobility development programme called 'Ecological Conversion 2030', also designed to reduce the CO2 impact of its vehicle fleet.

To this end, it intends to: gradually replace State-owned cars with electric vehicles; make its car fleet carbon-neutral by 2030; implement its recharging network in the State and extra-territorial areas and extend its use to its employees; and, ensure that its energy needs come exclusively from renewable energy sources.

A strategic partner for sustainable mobility

The Volkswagen Group, which aims to become a carbon-neutral company by 2050 and reduce the carbon footprint of its vehicles by 30% by 2030, is the first strategic partner for the project to renew the State's car fleet with Volkswagen and Škoda brand vehicles through the medium- and long-term rental formula.

Today, a partnership agreement is signed with the Volkswagen Group, as part of the sustainable mobility development programme, which is one of the steps the Governorate has taken to concretely reduce the impact of human activity on the environment.
