Peace prayers in Syro-Malabar churches on July 31

Two attackers on July 26 slit the throat of the 86-year-old priest celebrating Mass in a church in France.

Spiritual head of Syro-Malabar church Cardinal George Alencherry has condemned the murder of a priest in a church in northern France by Islamic State, voicing concern over religious radicalism "misleading and inspiring youth to do anti-national activities in India."

Condemning the terrorist attacks targeting Christians in many parts of the world, Cardinal Alencherry directed that special prayers be held in all Syro-Malabar churches on July 31 in the wake of challenges posed against world peace and Christian faith.

"The brutal killing of Fr Jacques Hamel as he held a church service has sent shock waves throughout the world," the cardinal said yesterday.

Two attackers on July 26 slit the throat of the 86-year-old priest celebrating Mass in a church in France, killing him and gravely injuring one of the worshippers present, before being shot dead by police.

Cardinal Alencherry said the incident occurred as France was already reeling under the killing of 84 people in Nice this month and a string of other deadly attacks which claimed several lives.

The Cardinal also expressed concern over incidents in India wherein people following Christianity were "weaned away" from it to join the extremist ideologies.

"It should be seen seriously that hectic activities are on to wean away people who follow Christian faith, radicalise them and inspire them to join anti-national activities," he said.

His statement assumes significance in view of reports of alleged forcible conversion to Islam at the behest of terror outfit Islamic State.

Some Keralite Christian youths, including a girl Merin Jacob from Kochi, had converted to Islam before they went missing in Middle East.

The senior priest also urged the government to step up efforts to ensure the release of a Keralite priest, Tom Uzhunnalil, from the captivity of extremists in Yemen.

Sushma to lead Indian delegation at Mother Teresa's canonisation

Pope Francis will declare Mother Teresa a saint at the Vatican on September 4.

New Delhi:  External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj will lead the Indian delegation to the canonisation of Mother Teresa at the Vatican in September, it was announced on Thursday.

�‚�€œIn view of the importance we attach to this very significant event, the canonisation of Mother Teresa, let me tell you that the government of India's delegation will be led by honourable External Affairs Minister herself,�‚�€ External Affairs Ministry spokesperson Vikas Swarup said in his weekly media briefing here.

He said that composition of the delegation was still being finalised and will be known a few days later.

Pope Francis will declare Mother Teresa a saint at the Vatican on September 4.

The date was announced on March 15 in what is called an �‚�€œordinary public consistory�‚�€ or a meeting of the Pope, cardinals and promoters of sainthood causes that formally ends the sainthood process.

The day chosen for Mother Teresa's canonisation is the eve of her 19th death anniversary and the date previously established by the Vatican for the conclusion of the Year of Mercy pilgrimage of people like her who are engaged in works of mercy.

Spread message of mercy, delegates at WYD opening told

Starting today we are going to communicate with each other in the language of love and peace, says Krakow cardinal.

Despite the heavy rain, pilgrims from all over the world, gather to sing and dance at the Blonia Meadows in Krakow, on July 26, to celebrate the Opening Mass on the first day of the World Youth Day.

International:  St. John Paul II's former secretary urged young Catholics to share their faith, experiences and hopes and spread a "message of divine mercy" worldwide during World Youth Day.

"We come from every nation under heaven, like those who came in great numbers to Jerusalem on Pentecost Day, but there are incomparably more of us now than 2,000 years ago, because we are accompanied by centuries of preaching the Gospel," Krakow Cardinal Stanislaw Dziwisz said during the July 26 opening Mass.

"We bring experience of various cultures, traditions and languages. But what we also bring are testimonies of faith and holiness of our brothers and sisters, followers of the risen Lord, of past generations as well as the current generation," he said.

The cardinal preached to an estimated 200,000 pilgrims from 187 countries in Krakow's Blonia Park, a day before the scheduled arrival of Pope Francis.

He said that Krakow was the city from where St. John Paul "set off to preach the Gospel," as well as where St. Faustina Kowalska helped spread devotion to Divine Mercy worldwide in the 20th century.

"You have come from all continents and nations, from the East and West, North and South of our globe," said Cardinal Dziwisz, who was personal secretary to St. John Paul for 39 years.

"You bring with you many experiences. You bring many desires. You speak numerous languages. But starting today, we are going to communicate with each other in the language of the Gospel — a language of love, brotherhood, solidarity and peace."

Up to 2 million young people were expected to attend World Youth Day July 26-31. Nearly 50 cardinals, 800 bishops and 20,000 priests from around the world also were to attend.

The opening Mass was partially disrupted by heavy rain, which forced the temporary closure of Krakow's airport. The Mass site featured giant portraits of Sts. John Paul and Faustina by the main altar.

Kerala Latin Church's media conclave starts today

Fr. Paul Thelekkatt will be among the key speakers on the topic on the changes in Kerala society and the interventions made by the media.

Kochi:  A media conclave, organised by the Media Commission of the Kerala Region Latin Catholic Bishops’ Council, will get underway in Kochi on July 28, said a press release.

The two-day conclave at Ashir Bhavan, Kacherippady, will be inaugurated by Finance Minister T. M. Thomas Isaac at 5 p.m. on the opening day, said the press release. Archbishop Francis Kallarakkal of Verapoly, who is also the chairman of the media commission, will preside over the inaugural function. Hibi Eden, MLA, will deliver the keynote address, the press release said.

The conclave will also see the honouring of George Veliparampil, who was the editor of the daily Kerala Times. He is a historian and writer, the press release said.

Father Paul Thelekkatt will be among the key speakers on the topic on the changes in Kerala society and the interventions made by the media. The discussions are scheduled to start at 6.30 p.m., according to the statement.

US documentary festival to screen movie by Indian Catholic

One of the movie is on female genocide.

International:  The United Nations Association Film Festival (UNAFF), one of the oldest solely documentary film festivals in the US, this year will feature a movie on female genocide by a Catholic film maker who grew up in India.

The documentary “Petals in the Dust: The Endangered Indian Girls” by Nyna Pais Caputihas been selected for the19th UNAFF to be held from Oct. 20-30 in Palo Alto, Stanford University, East Palo Alto and San Francisco.

The UNAFF, originally conceived to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the signing of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, provides early outlets for documentaries from all over the world.

“As they are focused primarily on human rights, we believe this is an excellent platform to raise awareness, broaden the reach of the film and shed light on the condition of an endangered people in one of the most populous, culturally and economically vibrant countries in the world, modern India,” said Pais Caputi, who has settled in the San Francisco Bay Area.

Because of a preference for boys, “50 million women were killed in India in the last century, that is more than the number of people killed in World War I and II, more than those who lost their lives in the Holocaust,” said Pais Caputi.

“This is genocide and cannot be ignored any longer. Although India's economy is booming, women in India continue to be victims of extreme violence from the womb to the tomb through sex-selective abortions, infanticide, dowry deaths, trafficking and rape.”

The film profiles the stories of women who survived, and also tells the stories of some of those who did not.

Over the years UNAFF has screened some of the most awarded and talked about documentaries in the industry, including seven that went on to win Academy Awards and twenty-eight that were nominated.

The UNAFF theme this year is “Compass for a Better World” which the festival organizers said on their website “continues the ongoing celebration of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights and focuses on various aspects of the Sustainable Development Goals.” The films to be screened were selected by a 28-member jury committee which reviewed almost 700 submissions for the 60-hour long festival program.

Arvind Kejriwal to attend Mother Teresa's canonisation in Vatican

Earlier in March this year, Pope Francis announced that the Mother would be made a saint on September 4.

New Delhi:  Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal will be travelling to Vatican City in Rome to witness the sainthood ceremony of Mother Teresa. The Roman Catholic nun is to be declared a saint on September 4 by Pope Francis.

Sources in the Delhi chief minister's office confirmed that Kejriwal received and accepted an invitation for the ceremony from the Missionaries of Charity in Kolkata, the organisation founded by Mother Teresa in 1950.

The Delhi chief minister said that he had met Mother Teresa in 1992 and she had asked him to work at Kalighat in Kolkata. Kejriwal worked for Mother Teresa for few months before joining the Indian Revenue Service.

Kejriwal will be joined by West Bengal CM Mamata Banerjee who had earlier accepted the invitation to attend the sainthood ceremony.

Earlier in March this year, Pope Francis announced that the Mother would be made a saint in a canonisation ceremony on September 4, the eve of her 19th death anniversary.

Church leader laments apathy toward unorganized workers

India has an estimated 500 million workers but 94 percent of them, or some 470 millions, are in unorganized sector.

New Delhi:  Archbishop Kuriakose Bharanikulangara of Faridabad has asked Catholics in northern India to take steps to help millions of unorganized workers, calling their general lack of concern for them an injustice.

The Syro-Malabar rite archbishop based in New Delhi was addressing a seminar organized by Catholic Bishops Conference of India’s Office for Labour for the representatives of northern states of Himachal, Haryana, Jammu & Kashmir, Punjab and Delhi.

India has an estimated 500 million workers but 94 percent of them, or some 470 millions, are in unorganized sector. The successive governments have hardly done anything to help them or ensure their basic rights, the prelate said.

The government of a welfare state has duty to ensure basic rights and life necessities of these people, he said adding that it “is an injustice” to enjoy their service neglect their basic rights and duties.

Archbishop Bharanikulangara wanted the Church to take extra steps in this Jubilee Year of Mercy to stand by the unorganized labours, majority of migrants in the cities like Delhi. He asked Church people device programs to help these people who toil under harsh whether in places unfamiliar to them.

Other experts who addressed the seminar include Father Jaison Vadassery, secretary of the bishops’ Office for Labour, Dr. Krishnakumar of Sri Venkatesware College in Delhi, Father Jose Edassery, Vicar General of Faridabad and Sister Rani HCM, Programme Manager of the Office for Labour.

இரண்டரை ஆண்டுகளுக்கு முன்னர், ஏறத்தாழ நான்காயிரம் ஆழ்தியான துறவு இல்லங்களுக்கும் கேள்விகள் அனுப்பப்பட்டு, கிடைத்த பதில்களிலிருந்து இப்புதிய விளக்கம் வெளிவந்துள்ளது என்பதையும் அறிவித்தார் பேராயர் கர்பாலோ.

Film festival to mark Mother Teresa canonization

Most films in the festival are documentaries.

Kolkata:  To mark the canonisation of Mother Teresa this September, a film festival focusing on her life and teachings will be held at over 100 locations in India and around 50 other countries.

Organised by the World Catholic Association for Communication's India chapter, the Mother Teresa International Film Festival (MTIFF) will be kicked off from Kolkata on August 26 after which it will travel all over the world for the next six months.

Festival director Sunil Lucas said they would present the best and the biggest repertoire of films and documentaries made on the Nobel laureate and inspired by her life.

"The objective is to spread the message of Mother Teresa before the world. We want to raise awareness and sensitise the people," he told PTI.

Although the complete list of films to be screened in the festival is yet to be finalised, the organisers are planning around 20 movies out of which two will have world premieres.

In Kolkata, the festival will be held for three days from August 26 at the state-run Nandan multiplex.

Other Indian cities where the film will be showcased include Delhi, Mumbai, Chennai, Bengaluru, Udaipur, Guwahati, Patna, Indore, Ranchi and four cities of Kerala.

Besides, the film festival will also travel to around 50 other countries including the UK, Malaysia, Ireland, Italy, Australia, Thailand, Myanmar, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka and China.

The two films which will have world premiere are "Love till it hurts" by Pauline Sisters and "Memories of Mother", made by a London-based filmmaker.

Most of the films in the carnival are documentaries.

Notable among them are 'Making of a Saint' and 'In the Name of God's Poor', which stars Charlie Chaplin's daughter Geraldine as Mother Teresa.

Another important work is from Emmy Award winning directors Ann and Jeannette Petrie who made "Mother Teresa: The Legacy" which was official film of the occasion of her Beatification in Rome.

Chronicling Teresa's rich legacy, which is carried out through the Missionaries of Charity founded by her in Kolkata, the film also has her interviews and other video footage.

Besides films on the Mother's life, there will be works which take a cue from her teachings like the Bengali film "My Karma".

This is the fourth edition of the festival, which is held only on special occasions associated with the Nobel laureate.

"No saint or blessed in the Catholic Church's history has had an international festival of films dedicated to him/her," said Fr C M Paul, who had led the first and second edition of MTIFF.

The first MTIFF was held in 2003 immediately after her beatification, the second on her 10th death anniversary in 2007 while the third edition, in 2010, marked her birth centenary.

New Delhi domestic workers protest rape

Many are young Christian girls from tribal areas looking to better their lives.

New Delhi:  The rape of a young house maid by her employer in New Delhi has forced 50 domestic servants to gather in protest.

They want stricter laws for their protection and security at work.

The 27-year-old domestic maid was raped last week by a 60-year-old retired merchant navy officer. The wife and daughter of the accused were reportedly in another room in the house when the crime was committed.

Holding placards and shouting slogans, protesters held a march and a demonstration on July 21 near Parliament house. An organization working for the rights of domestic workers, including Chetnalaya, the social service wing of the Delhi archdiocese, organized the protest.

"Domestic workers are in high demand in Delhi," said Anushika Thompson, advocacy and networking officer of the Domestic Workers’ Forum of Chetnalaya. "But they continue to become victims of atrocities of rape, domestic violence, physical and sexual abuse and other types of inhumane exploitations."

She expressed concern that many are suffering in silence. "The absence of a law to secure the rights of domestic workers is what makes their fight for justice difficult. In many cases, perpetrators get off scot-free," she said.

The International Labor Organization (ILO) estimates that there are nearly 4 million domestic workers in India. Even though the Indian government supported ILO’s 2011 convention, Decent Work for Domestic Work, it has not ratified it.

The convention requires each member country to fix a minimum wage for domestic workers, ensure their security and decent living conditions.

Due to lack of legislation and because it is the biggest unorganized sector in the country, domestic workers in India face under or nonpayment of wages, no holidays, termination of employment at the whims and fancies of the employer, and physical, mental or sexual exploitation.

Kamla Devi, a domestic worker who was part of protest, told ucanews.com that "we are working to support our families; not to get exploited at the hands of our employers."

She said that just because "we are poor, these people think they can do anything with us and get away with it."

House maids in the national capital are young girls from tribal areas such as Jharkhand and Bihar. Many of them are Christians looking to better their lives with a city job and to support their impoverished families.

Zakir Naik’s aide arrested for influencing Christian youth to join IS

Jacob alleged that his sister had been influenced to convert to Islam by Yahya and Arshid.

Mumbai:  An employee of the Islamic Research Foundation (IRF) was arrested by a team of Kerala police and the Maharashtra Anti-Terrorist Squad (ATS) in Mumbai on Thursday for allegedly radicalising and recruiting youth to the Islamic State (IS).

Arshid Qureshi, a public relation manager at IRF, was arrested from Nerul in Navi Mumbai under the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act and produced before a local court before being placed in transit remand. He will be taken to Kerala and produced before a court in Kochi.

The arrest is not good news for Dr Zakir Naik, the controversial Islamic preacher who founded the IRF and is also being investigated for links to extremist elements. He came into the spotlight recently when two of the six terrorists who attacked a Dhaka caf� in Bangladesh, claimed they were incited by his sermons. Naik is currently abroad.

The 45-year-old Arshid became a suspect after Palarivottam police station in Kochi registered a complaint against Yahya alias Bestin Vincent, a Christian from Palakkad who converted to Islam and is believed to have joined IS. He went missing from Kochi along with his wife Merin Jacob alias Mariyam. The complaint was registered by Merin’s brother Ebin Jacob.

Jacob alleged that his sister had been influenced to convert to Islam by Yahya and Arshid.

Hailing from a Christian family, Mariyam n�e Merin had met her husband while working in Mumbai in 2015. Though she initially resisted Islam, she was taken to several classes, following which, she had been converted, police sources said.

Ebin said that at one point his sister wished to come back to Kerala, where her family is, but was eventually forced into joining the IS. His brother-in-law also tried to convert him, Ebin added.
His parents alleged that Yahya and Mariyam were radicalised though Dr Naik, who they had met while in Mumbai.

According to police sources, Arshid was the public relation manager responsible when Dr Naik had held a massive public conference in 2009.

Nepalese Christian jailed over religious conversion

Police accuse her of trying to convert Hindu children in orphanage she runs with husband.

Kathmandu:  A Christian social worker who cares for orphans has been jailed in Nepal while waiting to be tried over charges related to human trafficking and controversial religious conversion laws.

Social worker Chinimaya Blown was accused by police of collecting Hindu children from remote areas of the Himalayan nation to put in her children's home and then forcing them to take part in Christian prayer services.

A conviction for evangelizing in Nepal can result in five years jail time and a 50,000-rupee (US$470) fine.

The children's home has 14 children aged between 5-13. Blown previously ran a children's home in Dhankuta, eastern Nepal, but was unable to renew that home's permit so she brought the orphans to a new home in the country's capital.

Blown, who is currently being held in a Kathmandu jail, also faces charges related to human trafficking for placing the children in the home.

"Religion inspires us to provide refuge to the poor and orphans, but injustice has been done to these Christians by our judicial system," said B.P. Khanal, General Secretary of Janajagaran Party Nepal, a Christian political party.

"The sad thing is, the authorities have not been able to see the good deeds of Chinimaya Blown," said Khanal.

Hari Tamang, who is a pastor of the Jerusalem Antioch Church has also been charged but freed on bail after spending 25 days in police custody. Both were arrested on June 24.

Pastor Tanka Subedi, co-chairperson of the Nepal Christian Society, said that all orphanages run by Christians provide children with Bibles and teach them how to say prayers.

"This has nothing to do with conversion. Children do not become Christian or baptized until they are fully adult. By that time they will decide which religion to follow," Subedi said.

These social workers are just trying to help the needy, he added.

Meanwhile in a separate case, Bharatpur police have arrested another Christian couple for running children's home without proper documents and for distributing Bibles to the children.

The family was providing food, accommodation and education to eight poor children. During a search of the home, police found a copy of the Bible that belonged to the husband, Pratik Sunar, say sources. Sunar's wife was freed after objections from locals but he remains in police custody.

Hindu-majority Nepal released its new constitution in September. The constitution declares that Nepal is a secular state. However, lawmakers are debating a contentious bill — yet to be made law — proposing five years of imprisonment and a penalty of 50,000 rupees for anyone found guilty of converting a person from one religion to another.

'False' report could enrage extremists, Christians claim

U.S. article claims more than 9,0000 Muslims have converted to Christianity in Bangladesh.

Dhaka:  Catholic and Protestant Church leaders have denounced a U.S. Christian news report that claimed 91,000 Muslims across Bangladesh have converted to Christianity.

The July 20 report from The Christian Post claims the surge happened over the last six years. "Even though persecution against Christians in Bangladesh is on the rise, so is the number of Muslims converting to Christianity," the report reads.

The report references a U.S.-based Christian human rights organization, Christian Freedom International as its primary source of information. It goes on to estimate that there are 1.6 million Christians in Bangladesh, accounting for 1 percent of country’s 160 million people, 90 percent of whom are Sunni Muslim.

But, according to data from the Catholic Church and a major Protestant church forum, there are only 600,000 Christians making up less than a half percent of country’s population.

Church leaders termed the report "baseless" and warned that it poses a "great danger" to Bangladeshi Christians who are already reeling from recent attacks.

"This is a totally false and fabricated report, there is no credible information that the number of Christians is rising in Bangladesh let alone through conversion of Muslims," Father Albert Thomas Rozario, convener of the Justice and Peace Commission in Dhaka Archdiocese told ucanews.com.

"Religious minorities including Christians are being targeted by militants, and these kinds of "fake reports" might enrage Islamic radicals and invite more attacks," the priest said.

A senior pastor from the Bangladesh Baptist Church, the largest Protestant church, also denounced the report as "false" and "disappointing."

"Based on experience and information, the reported increase is baseless. It will make Islamic extremists angry and provoke abuse and persecution," said the 65-year-old pastor, who requested not to be named.

The pastor noted that some fake churches who proselytize among poor people in order to collect foreign donations might account for the mistake.

"I suspect those fake churches provide cooked up information to donors for their own vested interests," said the pastor. "It might bring them money but it puts the whole Christian community at risk. Christian leaders need to stand up against those false churches."

Though Islam is officially the state religion, Bangladesh's constitution established the country as a secular state. The charter also protects the right to profess, practice and propagate any religion freely, but bans proselytizing.

Indonesian hospitals under fire over fake vaccines

Jakarta:  A number of parents have called on the Indonesian government as well as several hospitals to take the responsibility for administering fake vaccines, saying they might have dangerous side effects.

Many children have fallen sick after receiving them, authorities said.

"The government and hospitals must not close their eyes," said Alexander Anjas Nugroho, a father of a son who was vaccinated in the Catholic-run Elizabeth Hospital in West Java Province.

He said his son received 12 vaccinations including hepatitis B and polio in 2013 shortly after his birth. "I need to know if the fake vaccines have serious side effects," he said, adding that his son had a fever following the vaccinations.

He also urged the hospital to immediately offer a free medical check-up to other children who received fake vaccines. "The hospital's response so far isn't satisfactory," he said.

Leny Puspita, whose son was vaccinated three years ago in Harapan Bunda Hospital in East Jakarta, asserted that the issue wasn't about money."This is about our children's health," she said during a parent protest on July 20 outside the hospital.

"We want the hospital to be open about this," said Dian Eko Prasilowaty, whose three children were also vaccinated at Harapan Bunda Hospital. "What's in these fake vaccines?"

The Health Ministry cited both Elizabeth and Harapan Bunda Hospitals on July 14 for administering fake vaccines.

Azas Tigor Nainggolan, a spokesman for Elizabeth Hospital, admitted that the hospital administered fake vaccines to patients from Nov. 2 last year until June 25 this year.

"Our distributor had no more supplies, but the hospital had to continue its service," he explained. "On Nov. 2, a supplier called CV Azka Medika offered us [replacement] vaccines."

He said the hospital only found out they were fake on June 29. "[We] immediately withdrew the fake vaccines and replaced them … [The hospital] is ready to take further steps in accordance with the government's guidance."

President Joko Widodo called the scandal "an extraordinary crime" and urged all related parties to take the case seriously.

"We have already set up a team to investigate," Penny Kusumastuti Lukito, newly appointed head of the Food and Drug Monitoring Agency, told the Jakarta Post.

The government has begun a re-vaccination program for children affected by the scam.



Side effects

According to Hindra Irawan, secretary of Indonesia's Immunization Task Force, the side effects include muscle pain and reddish skin.

However, "the great loss is that [children] aren't immune and are prone to diseases," he told BBC Indonesia.

The exact number of children affected by these fake vaccines is not yet known, said Puri Kencana Putri from the Commission for the Disappeared and Victims of Violence, which is supporting the protesting parents.

At least 500 children received the fake vaccines, the commission said.

Agung Setya, director of Special Economic Crimes at the National Police, said the case came to light after many children fell sick after being vaccinated.

Setya said his bureau is investigating and that 15 suspects had been detained in connection with the distribution of fake vaccines so far.

World Youth Day a mission to fulfill for Filipino youth

Some 1,500 young people from the Philippines are attending this year's event in Krakow.

Manila:  Attending World Youth Day celebrations has been on Ina Baylon's wish list since she was 16-years-old.

Now at 20, Ina is traveling to Krakow, Poland, not to realize a dream but to fulfill a mission.

"I look at this experience as my road to holiness," says Ina. "I look forward to having a deeper understanding of the Catholic faith, of prayer, and of God's power in this world."

Ina, a student at the pontifical University of Santo Tomas in Manila is one of 1,500 Filipinos attending this year's youth celebration in the childhood home of Saint Pope John Paul II.

With 29 of the Filipino delegates coming from Ina's diocese in Paranaque, she is hopeful of coming back with lessons to share with her community.

"My local church has become my home," says Ina. "I have become a servant and a leader through my ten years of participation in our church," she adds.

"When I come home, I want to give back and echo what I've heard and learned to my fellow youth," she says. "I want to give them a bigger perspective on faith and how this faith moves people."

"Blessed are the merciful for they will receive mercy" is the theme of this year's World Youth Day celebrations from July 25-31.

In a video message, Pope Francis said he wished participants to be "inspired by mercy during this Jubilee Year."

He also expressed his excitement at the prospect of meeting "a mosaic of different faces, from many races, languages, peoples and cultures, but all united in the name of Jesus, who is the face of mercy."

With an age limit of 16-39 years old, the week-long festival and celebration of faith is expected to be attended by some 2.5 million "millennials."

Ina hopes the large number will serve as a reminder that the youth can also lead in their own ways.

"I hope that we break the notion that the young are irresponsible," says Ina. "I want to show the world that we are also faithful and committed, and we are part of the church."

This year's gathering in Krakow is expected to be the most international event since its inception in 1986. With a total of 187 participating countries, this year's celebrations will showcase a wide array of songs and dances from different delegations.

"I look forward to meeting people from all parts of the world who share the same faith," says Ina. "I want to see how they practice their faith, and how God's love moves among the people."

Behind her enthusiasm Ina also worries about being away from her comfort zone. With recent attacks around the world, she admits to getting anxious from time to time.

"When I think about it, I would always pray," she says. "I know that this is a test of faith, and to get through this is to become a warrior," adds the young girl.

Saint Pope John Paul II, who was from Poland, established World Youth Day in 1985. The first event was held in Rome in 1986. Since then it has been staged in various cities throughout the world, typically every three years.

This year, the World Youth Day officially kicks off July 25, with Pope Francis arriving on July 27. It will be Pope Francis' second World Youth Day during his pontificate.
