The Shepherd of the Salt and Soil

(In Memoriam: Bishop Jerome Dhas Varuvel, SDB -
by Rev. Robert John Kennedy)

The miter rests. The silver crosier stands

Against the granite of a nascent wall;

The Master Builder leaves to higher lands,

Beyond the reach of any earthly call.

From Loyola’s gates, I watch the evening star

Hang low o’er Kanyakumari’s surging foam,

And trace the path of him who traveled far

To lead a wandering, coastal people home.

He was the Son of Bosco—marked by joy,

The "Preventive" heart that shielded every lad,

Who saw the hidden saint in every boy

In the green silences of Thalavadi.

He knew that grace, like any Roman verse,

Needs structure first to let the spirit sing;

He took a young diocese, as if to nurse

A fledgling bird and teach its soul to wing.

No ivory tower held his quiet mind,

Though Latin rolled like thunder from his tongue;

His was a wisdom of a different kind—

Of nets cast wide and parish hymns well-sung.

And when the "Liturgy of Silence" came,

When Parkinson’s became his heavy cross,

He whispered still the One Essential Name,

Turning to gold the leaden weight of loss.

The "Fiat" spoken at the dawn of light,

The Shepherd’s scent upon his weary fleece;

He walked through shadows, looking for the height,

And found at last the Annunciation’s peace.

Sleep now, Jerome, where salt and incense meet,

Beside the waves that murmur on the shore;

Lay down your sandals at the Master’s feet—

The Architect has passed the Final Door.

The Miter and the Mentor
(A Personal Eulogy for My Father in Christ, Bishop Jerome Dhas - Rev. Robert John Kennedy)

The halls of Loyola taught me how to read
The cadence of a line, the weight of light;
But you, my Bishop, taught me how to bleed
For a fledgling flock in the watch-fires of the night.
I came to you with a scholar’s restless mind,
With Horace and with Hopkins on my tongue;
But in your Salesian heart, I came to find
The sturdier prose to which a priest is hung.

I remember the "Yes" that built the stone—
The birth of Kuzhithurai from the sea.
You did not claim a kingdom or a throne,
But carved a home for men like you and me.
How many times, in the quiet of the room,
Did your "kindness" (that old Salesian art)
Dispel the shadows of a gathering gloom
And stitch the fraying edges of my heart?

You were the architect of more than walls;
You were the architect of us, your sons.
And when the long, slow, silent shadow falls,
The race is finished, and the course is run.
I watched the tremor take the steady hand
That once had laid the chrism on my brow;
I saw the silence sweep across the land,
A Master-work complete, and silent now.

Today, the March winds carry salt and prayer,
From the Citadel down to the southern shore;
The scent of incense lingers in the air,
But your gentle footstep sounds upon the floor
No more. Yet in every verse I write,
And every broken bread I hold on high,
I see your face—a beacon in the night,
A shepherd’s star against a Tamil sky.

Sleep now, my Father.
Let the bells ring out
The Annunciation of your final peace.
Beyond the reach of tremor, pain, or doubt,
The Shepherd rests; the labors find release.

People's Pastor Jerome Dhas:

In Memoriam - A Tribute to Most Rev. Jerome Dhas Varuvel, SDB (1951–2026)

By Rev. Robert John Kennedy

The history of the Catholic Church in Tamil Nadu is written in the lives of its shepherds, but the history of the Diocese of Kuzhithurai will forever be inscribed with a single, foundational name: Bishop Jerome Dhas Varuvel. On March 24, 2026, as the Church prepared for the solemnity of the Annunciation, our first Bishop Emeritus made his final "Fiat" to the Eternal Father. He did not merely leave behind a diocese; he left behind a spiritual family that he birthed through prayer, sweat, and an unwavering Salesian joy.

The Son of Don Bosco

To understand Bishop Jerome was to understand the heart of St. John Bosco. His journey was never about the miter or the crosier; it was about the Oratory. Whether he was guiding young novices at Idaya Deepam in the Yelagiri Hills or serving as a Provincial Counselor, his philosophy remained constant: “Education is a matter of the heart.” He brought this "Pedagogy of Presence" to the rugged terrains of Thalavadi and later to the coastal reaches of Kanyakumari. He believed that the Church’s greatest asset was not its land or its gold, but its youth. Within the Tamil Nadu Bishops' Council (TNBC), he was the architect of a modernized youth ministry, insisting that our young people be "honest citizens and good Christians" in an increasingly digital world.

Building a House on Rock

In 2014, when the Diocese of Kuzhithurai was carved out of the venerable Diocese of Kottar, the task ahead was Herculean. Bishop Jerome was handed a mandate with no central office, no established curia, and the immense pressure of rising expectations.

Yet, he moved with the quiet confidence of a master builder. His administration was a masterclass in Synodality long before the term became a global priority. He didn't just appoint officials; he empowered the laity. He established the commissions—not as bureaucratic hurdles, but as lifelines for the fisherfolk, the marginalized, and the struggling students of our soil. He was a Bishop of the peripheries, preferring the humble parish feast in a remote village over the grand stage of the city.

The Liturgy of Silence

Perhaps his most profound homily was preached during his final years (2020–2026). As Parkinson’s disease and the weight of physical infirmity began to claim his voice and his mobility, Bishop Jerome entered into a "Liturgy of Silence." In the quiet rooms of St. Bede’s and the Salesian Citadel, he became the "Confessor Bishop." Even when he could no longer stand to celebrate the Mass with his former vigor, he sat for hours in the confessional, dispensing the mercy of God. He taught us that a priest’s ministry does not end when his strength fades; it simply transforms into a more perfect sacrifice. His suffering was his final gift to the Diocese of Kuzhithurai—a silent prayer for the priests and people he loved so dearly.

A Lasting Legacy

As we bid farewell to our pioneer shepherd, we do not say goodbye to his vision. We see his legacy in every rural school he strengthened, in every youth group he inspired, and in the very structural integrity of the Kuzhithurai Diocese. He was a man of the soil who reached for the stars, a scholar who spoke the language of the simple, and a Salesian who lived the "Joy of the Gospel" until his last breath.

Eternal rest grant unto him, O Lord, and let perpetual light shine upon him.

Bishop Jerome Dhas: The Gentle Architect of Souls - memorial honoring the late Bishop

"The Gentle Architect of Souls"

Theme: I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race, I have kept the faith. (2 Timothy 4:7)

I. Introduction: The Setting of a Cornerstone

  • The Personal Connection: Begin by acknowledging the collective grief of the Diocese of Kuzhithurai and the Salesian family. Note that while we mourn a father, we celebrate a "Master Builder" who was called home to the Eternal Tabernacle on the vigil of the Annunciation.

  • The Historical Moment: Reflect on the year 2014—the birth of a diocese. Remind the faithful that a new diocese is like a ship without a map, and Bishop Jerome was the steady hand at the helm who navigated the transition from Kottar to Kuzhithurai with grace, not grievance.

II. The Salesian Heart: Education as Evangelization

  • Don Bosco’s Son: Highlight his roots. He didn't lead as a monarch but as a Rector. His administrative skills were secondary to his "Preventive System"—the belief that through Reason, Religion, and Loving-Kindness, any soul could be saved.

  • The Ministry of the Novitiate: Share a brief reflection on his time as a Novice Master. He understood that the future of the Church depends on the quality of the heart, not just the quantity of the priests. He sought "Holy Priests" for Kuzhithurai, not just functional ones.

III. The Shepherd of the Peripheries (TNBC & Thalavadi)

  • Beyond the Cathedral: Speak of his love for the "Dusty Road." Mention his tireless work in the Tamil Nadu Bishops' Council (TNBC) for youth and his years in Thalavadi.

  • A Voice for the Coastal and Tribal: He was a man of the soil and the sea. His vision for Kuzhithurai was never about grand buildings, but about the "Living Stones"—the fisherfolk, the farmers, and the youth who found dignity through the schools and commissions he established.

IV. The Liturgy of Suffering: The Final Years

  • The Silent Sermon: Address his final years (2020–2026). As Parkinson's and illness took his voice, his life became his most powerful homily. He taught us how to carry the Cross with "Salesian Cheerfulness."

  • The Confessional as a Throne: Even when his body failed, his spirit remained available. Remind the congregation of his hours spent in the confessional at the Citadel and St. Bede’s—reminding us that a Bishop's greatest power is the power to absolve and to heal.

V. Conclusion: Entrusting the Shepherd to the Good Shepherd

  • The Marian Finish: As a devotee of Mary Help of Christians, it is fitting he returned to God during this season of the Annunciation. He said "Yes" to a new diocese, "Yes" to the poor, and finally, "Yes" to the Father's call.

  • The Call to Action: We honor him best not by building monuments, but by continuing his vision: a Church of communion, a Church of the young, and a Church that serves the smallest among us.

It is with a heavy heart, yet one filled with profound gratitude, that I reflect on the life of Bishop Jerome Dhas Varuvel, SDB, particularly as we receive the news of his passing just yesterday, March 24, 2026.

His transition from this world to the Father’s house marks the end of a physical journey that was entirely "given to God and the young." Here is a deeper look into the specific pillars of his legacy.

1. The Salesian Identity: Formator of Souls

Before he was a Bishop, Jerome Dhas was a Master of Novices. This role is crucial to understanding his "Bishop’s heart."

  • A Paternal Formator: At Idaya Deepam in Yelagiri Hills, he was known not for rigid discipline, but for "Affirmative Accompaniment." He believed that a vocation is nurtured through kindness. His monthly dialogues with novices were legendary for their patience—he sought the "goodness" in every individual, a trait he carried into his governance of the Kuzhithurai Diocese.

  • The Pedagogy of Presence: His Licentiate in Pedagogy from Rome wasn't just a degree; it was his methodology. Whether as Rector in Tirupattur or Director in the tribal belts of Thalavadi, he practiced the Salesian "Preventive System"—reason, religion, and loving-kindness.

2. The TNBC and Regional Leadership

Within the Tamil Nadu Bishops' Council (TNBC), Bishop Jerome was a voice for structural reform and youth animation.

  • The Youth Commission: He was instrumental in aligning the TNBC’s youth outreach with the global Salesian Youth Ministry Framework. He pushed for "Life Skills" and "Ecological Responsibility" to be part of parish-level youth formation.

  • Linguistic and Liturgical Contribution: Gifted in music, he composed numerous hymns that are still sung across Tamil Nadu. He understood that in the Tamil culture, faith is expressed through song, and he used his musicality as a pastoral tool for evangelization.

3. A Vision of the "Peripheries"

Long before he became Bishop Emeritus, Jerome Dhas focused on the marginalized and tribal populations.

  • The Thalavadi Mission: His years (2003–2010) in the Erode district among the poor and tribal communities defined his episcopal motto. He didn't just build chapels; he built "Kalvi Solai" (Centres for Education and Culture).

  • The "Silent" Administrator: In Kuzhithurai, his administration was quiet but firm. He inherited a new diocese with no infrastructure and, within five years, established a functional Curia while remaining personally detached from material wealth. He was often seen as a "Confessor Bishop"—even in his final years at St. Bede’s and The Citadel, he spent hours in the confessional, offering mercy to all who came.

4. Personal Beliefs: The Theology of Suffering

In his final years (2020–2026), Bishop Jerome faced the "dark night" of Parkinson’s and dementia with extraordinary serenity.

  • The Cross as Ministry: He viewed his illness not as a retirement from work, but as a new form of ministry—a silent testimony of faith.

  • Marian Devotion: His life was bookended by the Salesian devotion to Mary Help of Christians. He believed that she "did everything" in his life, from his ordination by St. John Paul II to the founding of the Kuzhithurai Diocese.

A Final Prayer

As the Diocese of Kuzhithurai prepares for his funeral today, March 25, we remember a man who was a "Master Builder" of both structures and spirits. He was a shepherd who knew his sheep by name and a Salesian who lived the joy of the Gospel until his very last breath.

May his soul rest in peace.

The Shepherd of the South: The Life and Episcopacy of Bishop Jerome Dhas

The Shepherd of the South: The Life and Episcopacy of Bishop Jerome Dhas Varuvel

The history of the Diocese of Kuzhithurai is inextricably linked with the vision and tireless labor of its first Ordinary, Bishop Jerome Dhas Varuvel, S.D.B. To understand the diocese today is to look back at the foundation laid by a man whose life was defined by Salesian joy, academic rigor, and a profound paternal love for the people of Kanyakumari.

Early Life and Salesian Roots

Born in 1951 in Paduoornagar, Bishop Jerome Dhas was formed in the crucible of the Salesians of Don Bosco (SDB). This charismatic foundation was the North Star of his ministry. Ordained a priest in 1985, his early years were marked by a commitment to the "Oratory" spirit—focusing on the holistic development of youth.

His academic background in economics and philosophy provided him with a sharp analytical mind, but it was his formation in Rome that tempered this intellect with a universal view of the Church. Before his episcopal appointment, his leadership as a novice master and provincial counselor showcased a man who prioritized the internal formation of the soul as much as the external growth of the institution.

The Dawn of a New Diocese: Administration in Kuzhithurai

When Pope Francis erected the Diocese of Kuzhithurai in 2014, carving it out from the historic Diocese of Kottar, he chose a son of the soil to lead it. Bishop Jerome Dhas faced the daunting task of "creating something from nothing."

His administrative style was characterized by:

  • Structural Integrity: He established the curia, the presbyteral council, and various commissions with a focus on transparency and Canon Law.

  • The Multiplier Effect: Rather than centralized power, he empowered the laity and the religious, recognizing that a young diocese survives on the active participation of all its members.

  • Infrastructure for the Poor: He focused on building not just a cathedral, but schools and community centers that served as "lighthouses" for the marginalized.

Pastoral Priorities and Ministry

Bishop Jerome’s heart beat for the peripheries. His pastoral priorities were never abstract; they were rooted in the daily struggles of the fisherfolk, the farmers, and the daily laborers of Tamil Nadu.

  1. Youth Empowerment: True to his Salesian heritage, he viewed youth not as the future of the Church, but as the now of the Church. He initiated programs that combined spiritual growth with vocational training.

  2. Social Justice: He was a vocal advocate for the rights of the coastal communities. His ministry was one of presence—he was often found in the small coastal parishes, listening more than he spoke.

  3. Educational Reform: He believed that education was the only permanent ladder out of poverty. Under his watch, the diocese's educational institutions were urged to provide quality instruction regardless of a student's economic background.

Vision, Skills, and Beliefs

The "Dhas Vision" was centered on the concept of Communion. He envisioned a Church that was a "Family of Families."

  • Skills: He was a gifted linguist and a persuasive communicator. His ability to bridge the gap between complex theological concepts and the simple faith of the rural poor was his greatest pedagogical skill.

  • Beliefs: His theology was deeply Christocentric and Marian. He moved with a quiet confidence that "God provides," a belief that allowed him to take bold risks in the early days of the diocese. He believed in a "Synodal" way of being long before it became a global Catholic buzzword—consulting, listening, and then acting with decisiveness.

Conclusion: A Lasting Legacy

Bishop Jerome Dhas Varuvel did not merely occupy an office; he birthed a community. His resignation in 2020 did not end his influence; it solidified it. He remains the Pater Familias of Kuzhithurai—a shepherd who smelled of his sheep and a leader who built a house on the solid rock of faith, education, and social equity. For those of us in the ministry, his life serves as a blueprint for how to lead with the heart of a father and the mind of a master builder.
