Director Darren Aronofsky's biblical epic “Noah” sailed at the
weekend box office as the film opened at No. 1 with an estimated $44
million in ticket sales.
The film, which cost about $130 million to make, solidly met
expectations, according to Paramount Pictures, which had initially
forecast a $30-million opening weekend. "Noah" already has generated
about $95 million overseas.
“It was a fantastic result,” said Megan Colligan, Paramount’s president of domestic marketing and distribution. “I think the movie really surprises people and makes them want to talk about it.”
“Noah” brought in a diverse crowd, Colligan said, a 50-50 split of male and female audience members. The film generated strong turnout among Christians, Catholic Latinos and African Americans, plus “lots of Aronofsky fans in major cities,” Colligan said.
“There was a pretty good balance of age ranges but a little bit of an older crowd, which we expected,” she said.
In Santa Monica, one packed AMC theater gave the film a standing ovation Saturday night.
“At first I thought maybe we walked into the wrong movie -- it was a little cheesy of a start,” said Astacia Christenson, 36. “But it worked out because you got into the characters, there was some good acting and the story picked up and got more interesting. The movie saved itself."

Italian prosecutors on Friday said two former top executives at the Vatican bank will go on trial for money laundering, while the bank's ex-chairman was declared innocent.
Paolo Cipriani, the former director general of the bank formally known as the Institute for Religious Works, and his deputy Massimo Tulli are accused in a case that led to the seizure of 23 million euros ($32 million).
Italian media reported prosecutors as saying that Cipriani and Tulli had signed off on the suspicious payment and former president Ettore Gotti Tedeschi had instead tried to enforce money laundering laws.
The two were forced to resign last year, three days after a senior Vatican accountant -- Monsignor Nunzio Scarano -- who held accounts at the bank was arrested in Italy for suspicious cash transfers.
Tedeschi, who was himself ousted in 2012 in an unusually public showdown with the bank's board, was instead entirely cleared by the investigation and threatened legal action for damage to his reputation.
The banker's lawyers said the accusations against their client had been "unfounded".
Some Italian media have reported that he was dismissed because of a clash with bank insiders who opposed his efforts to bring greater transparency to the institution.
The bank, which handles the accounts of Catholic clerics and congregations around the world, has a murky reputation but the Vatican has vowed to clean it up and bring it in line with international laws.

with treason, a landmark move in a case seen as a test of civilian
authority in a country long dominated by the military.Musharraf pleaded not guilty to each of the five charges handed down by the three-member bench.
Prosecutor Sardar Ismatullah said Musharraf was indicted for imposing emergency rule in 2007 and for subverting the constitution.
“These are baseless charges and I will defend them,” Musharraf told the court, Pakistani media reported.
“I am being called a traitor. I have been chief of army staff for nine years and served this army for 45 years. I have fought two wars and it is treason?" Musharraf asked.
Musharraf's defence team requested a court adjournment for eight weeks to allow them to prepare, and repeated a call for the retired general to be allowed to visit his ailing mother who is in her 90s and living in Dubai.
"He has come voluntarily to the court and he has pleaded not guilty. He will come back voluntarily," lawyer Farogh Naseem said.
The court is likely to respond to this request in its written order later Monday.
Musharraf declared a state of emergency in November 2007, shortly before the Supreme Court was due to rule on the legality of his re-election as president a month earlier while he was also the army chief.
He then arrested and sacked the country's top judges, including the chief justice, who challenged his decision.
Facing impeachment following democratic elections in 2008, Musharraf resigned as president, going into self-imposed exile in Dubai.
He returned to Pakistan in March last year to run in the general election. Almost as soon as he landed he was barred from contesting the vote and hit with a barrage of legal accusations, including his decision to raid a radical mosque in Islamabad, the killing of a rebel leader in Baluchistan and the assassination of ex-prime minister Benazir Bhutto.
The charges against Musharraf mark the first time a former leader or high ranking military official has faced criminal prosecution.
If convicted, he could face either life imprisonment or the death penalty.

The NUCF is a forum of Catholic Bishops’ Conference of India (CBCI), National Council of Churches in India (NCCI) and Evangelical Fellowship of India (EFI).
In a statement, the forum said that anti-conversion laws, enforced in some states, are used to intimidate and harass religious minorities, particularly Christians and there should be religious freedom in the country.
It noted that religious minorities run educational institutions even in the remotest villages as their primary purpose is to educate the poor and the marginalised.
“Minority rights should be upheld in its spirit and the government should continue its support to minority private schools and colleges,” it said.
The forum said that in the process of development and industrialisation, the tribal communities undergo displacement, losing their culture, identity and their livelihood.
It said that policies should be evolved to stop the mass displacement of tribes and protection be given for their livelihoods.
The forum underlined the need to strengthen anti-corruption laws and passage of Prevention of Targeted Communal Violence Bill in the Parliament. It also asked for reservation of 33 per cent seats in Parliament for women.

Dignity of the human person: Every human being is created in the image and likeness of God and therefore has inherent dignity. No human being should have their dignity or freedom compromised. The dignity of every person, independent of ethnicity, creed, gender, sexuality, age or ability, is the foundation of Catholic Social Teaching.
The common good: Every person should have sufficient access to the goods and resources of society so that they can completely and easily live fulfilling lives. The rights of the individual to personal possessions and community resources must be balanced with the needs of the disadvantaged and dispossessed. The common good is reached when we work together to improve the wellbeing of people in our society and the wider world.
Subsidiarity and participation: All people have the right to participate in decisions that affect their lives. Subsidiarity requires that decisions are made by the people closest and most affected by the issues and concerns of the community.
Solidarity: Everyone belongs to one human family, regardless of their national, religious, ethnic, economic, political and ideological differences. Everyone has an obligation to promote the rights and development of all peoples across communities, nations, and the world, irrespective of national boundaries. We are called by the principle of solidarity to take the parable of the Good Samaritan to heart (Luke 10:29-37), and to express this understanding in how we live and interact with others.
Preferential option for the poor: Caring for the poor is everyone’s responsibility. Preferential care should be shown to poor and vulnerable people, whose needs and rights are given special attention in God’s eyes. Jesus taught that God asks each of us what we are doing to help the poor and needy: “Amen, I say to you, whatever you did for one of these least brothers of mine, you did for me” (Matthew 25:40).Economic justice: Economic life is not meant solely for profit, but rather in service of the entire human community. Everyone capable should be involved in economic activity and should be able to draw from work, the means for providing for themselves and their family.
Stewardship of Creation: We must all respect, care for and share the resources of the earth, which are vital for the common good of people. Care for animals and the environment is a common and universal duty, and ecological problems call for a change of mentality and the adoption of new lifestyles.
Promotion of peace: All Peace requires respect for and the development of human life, which in turn involves the safeguarding of the goods, dignity and freedom of people. Peace is the fruit of justice and is dependent upon right order among human beings.

The news that Pope Francis fired — or “accepted the resignation of” —
the German churchman known as “Bishop Bling” because of his
big-spending ways has touched off speculation among Catholics that other
dismissals could be in the offing.
Here’s the answer in four words: Perhaps, but probably not.
Recent history shows why: Bishop Robert Finn of Kansas City, Mo., remains in office 18 months after his conviction – and $1.4 million spent on his defense — for failing to report a priest suspected of abuse. Los Angeles Cardinal Roger Mahony enjoys a high-profile retirement in spite of the disapproval of his own successor over Mahony’s abuse record. Similarly, Cardinal Bernard Law, formerly of Boston, is still living a gilded existence in Rome years after he was plucked from the U.S. amid the clergy abuse scandal.
Not to mention Newark, N.J., Archbishop John Myers, who heads his diocese amid questions about his handling of abuse cases as well as pricey additions to his upscale retirement home.
Financially speaking, “Bishop Bling,” Franz-Peter Tebartz-van Elst of Limburg, Germany, was in a league of his own: He spent some $43 million on a luxurious new residence and office complex while cutting staff.
After news of the expenditures broke last September, Tebartz-van Elst was sent to a monastery and Francis sent an emissary to figure out what was happening. On Wednesday (March 26), Francis formally accepted his resignation, which the Vatican said was offered last October.
So is this the start of something new? Don’t hold your breath, for three reasons:
ONE: ‘Bishop Bling’ was a perfect storm
Not only did Tebartz-van Elst spend a ton of money on all the wrong things, but he did so just after the cardinals elected a pope who is making austerity and humility the hallmarks of a bishop in today’s church. Francis wants prelates to “smell like the sheep,” not pricey cologne, and he doesn’t want them to act with the sort of authoritarian and dismissive manner that Tebartz-van Elst displayed.
In fact, as the resignation of Tebartz-van Elst was being announced on Wednesday, Francis was telling thousands of people in St. Peter’s Square that “a bishop who is not in the service of the community does no good.”
In addition, Tebartz-van Elst last November paid a court-ordered fine of nearly $30,000 to avoid a perjury charge over his false claims that he did not fly first class to India on a charity trip. That’s three strikes.
TWO: There is no process for firing a bishop
It seems odd, but the Vatican just can’t depose or defrock a bishop the way it can — and often does — a priest. The Vatican statement on Tebartz-van Elst justified his departure by saying that his situation “impedes a fruitful exercise of his ministry.”
If that sounds vague, that’s because it is. In recent years, different popes have removed or forced the resignation of numerous bishops, for a host of reasons: financial shenanigans, perceived dissent from church teaching or revelations that they fathered a child or two, as happened with Los Angeles Auxiliary Bishop Gabino Zavala in 2012.
But the real reasons behind the dismissals are usually guesswork since the process is secret, even to the men who are getting the pink slip. Often, there is in fact no real process at all — the Vatican would rather just work behind the scenes to pressure a bishop to resign quietly, and then forget about the whole episode.
“Bishops may be successors of the apostles and Vicars of Christ in their own diocese, but they have fewer rights under Canon Law than parish priests,” the editors of The Tablet, a London-based Catholic weekly, said in a 2013 editorial calling for a transparent and just system for removing bishops.
THREE: Poor management isn’t a firing offense
If it were, you might be hard-pressed to find a bishop in many dioceses. Instead, the church’s code of canon law generally requires that a bishop have done something clearly wrong, such as stealing or committing abuse himself — which can trigger “privation” of his office.
As blogger and canon lawyer Edward Peters has put it, “criminal conduct is not the same thing as ‘mismanagement,’ and it is certainly not the same thing as ‘weak performance.’” Doing a bad job could justify sacking a lower-level official, Peters wrote in connection with the resignation of an African bishop in 2011, but does not constitute grounds for firing a member of the hierarchy.
It’s worth noting that disgraced bishops and cardinals rarely lose their titles or are defrocked. Case in point: Mahony, and Scottish Cardinal Keith O’Brien, who was brought down in a sex scandal just before last year’s conclave. Instead, they are told to stay under the radar or are moved to lower-profile posts.
In fact, Tebartz-van Elst, who was removed despite the support of some powerful allies, remains a bishop, and the Vatican said that “the departing bishop … will be given another job at an opportune time.”

Victims are speaking out in greater numbers, new report suggests

When her husband kicked her in the face after she refused to give him
money, Mariyati (not her real name) – three months pregnant at the time
– had no idea that this was just the start of a cycle of abuse that
would last for more than two decades.
In subsequent years, her husband cut her with a machete and hit her in the face with a hammer, which caused her lip to split and dislodged one of her front teeth – this in response to seeing her speak to a male co-worker.
During 22 years of marriage, Mariyati – a garment worker in Tanjung Priok in North Jakarta – endured numerous attacks of varying degrees of severity, and she chose to endure the beatings and injuries in silence.
“I would suffer more if I screamed, so I chose to keep silent,” she says, adding that her husband did not seem ashamed of his treatment of her, but rather took pride in it.
“One thing that confused me was that he always told me to go out to a nearby market to buy something after he hurt me. I thought he wanted our neighbors to know that I had injuries because I had disrespected him.
Mariyati is one of thousands of women who suffer domestic violence in Indonesia, according to a recent report by the National Commission of Violence against Women (Komnas Perempuan.)
Authorities recorded 11,719 cases of domestic violence in 2013, according to the report issued earlier this month – up from 8,315 in 2012.
Komnas Perempuan, which issues the annual report on violence against women to coincide with International Women’s Day on March 8, says the actual number of cases is likely to be much higher.
“This increase [from 2012] indicates that women are more confident in speaking out,” said Justina Rostiawati, a commissioner with Komnas Perempuan.
“But it doesn’t really mean that the previous year’s cases were actually fewer because there might have been many victims who were unable to speak out.”
There are a number of psychological or economic reasons why some women refuse to report their husbands to the police, says Uli Arta Pangaribuan, a lawyer from the Legal Aid Foundation of the Indonesian Women’s Association for Justice.
“Their husbands get mad if they do that. They also don’t get much support from their families because reporting their cases means giving a bad name to their families.”

Mudjiati, a deputy on the women’s protection desk at the Ministry of Women’s Empowerment and Child Protection, said that the rise in the number of domestic violence cases could be linked to a growing understanding of legal mechanisms available to victims.
Indonesia passed the Elimination of Domestic Violence law in 2004, and since that time Mudjiati says that “society understands what domestic violence is … [and] there’s progress in their understanding of human rights”.
But Mudjiati acknowledged that more needed to be done to protect women.
“Society’s awareness needs to be improved. Some people tend to think that domestic violence – when there’s hitting – is just a family affair and must not be reported. In fact, it’s a criminal offense.”
It was just such awareness on the part of Mariyati’s co-workers at the garment factory that convinced her to take action.
“If you died, how could we help you? You have to make a move,” Mariyati, now 45, said, quoting her co-workers.
In June last year, she left her husband and took refuge for three months in the secretariat of the Inter-Factory Labor Federation in North Jakarta.
Mariyati later rented a home for her three children, who now reside with her husband pending divorce proceedings.
“I’m not afraid at all. I’ve already made up my mind. It’s better to speak out than to live in fear.”
In subsequent years, her husband cut her with a machete and hit her in the face with a hammer, which caused her lip to split and dislodged one of her front teeth – this in response to seeing her speak to a male co-worker.
During 22 years of marriage, Mariyati – a garment worker in Tanjung Priok in North Jakarta – endured numerous attacks of varying degrees of severity, and she chose to endure the beatings and injuries in silence.
“I would suffer more if I screamed, so I chose to keep silent,” she says, adding that her husband did not seem ashamed of his treatment of her, but rather took pride in it.
“One thing that confused me was that he always told me to go out to a nearby market to buy something after he hurt me. I thought he wanted our neighbors to know that I had injuries because I had disrespected him.
Mariyati is one of thousands of women who suffer domestic violence in Indonesia, according to a recent report by the National Commission of Violence against Women (Komnas Perempuan.)
Authorities recorded 11,719 cases of domestic violence in 2013, according to the report issued earlier this month – up from 8,315 in 2012.
Komnas Perempuan, which issues the annual report on violence against women to coincide with International Women’s Day on March 8, says the actual number of cases is likely to be much higher.
“This increase [from 2012] indicates that women are more confident in speaking out,” said Justina Rostiawati, a commissioner with Komnas Perempuan.
“But it doesn’t really mean that the previous year’s cases were actually fewer because there might have been many victims who were unable to speak out.”
There are a number of psychological or economic reasons why some women refuse to report their husbands to the police, says Uli Arta Pangaribuan, a lawyer from the Legal Aid Foundation of the Indonesian Women’s Association for Justice.
“Their husbands get mad if they do that. They also don’t get much support from their families because reporting their cases means giving a bad name to their families.”

groups in a strife-hit western state, police said Friday.The girl was shot Thursday at her home near a UN World Food Programme warehouse in the Rakhine state capital Sittwe that was targeted by rioters, Lieutenant Colonel Min Aung said by telephone.
"She was hit when security forces fired warning shots to disperse people at the WFP warehouse," he said. "The situation in Sittwe is calm now after a curfew was imposed."
He said nobody else was wounded in the incident.
The unrest began late Wednesday when hundreds of Buddhists massed around the offices of Germany-based medical aid group Malteser International in Sittwe, accusing an American aid worker of handling a religious flag in a disrespectful manner.
Humanitarian workers in the restive region have come under increasing pressure from Buddhist nationalists who accuse them of bias in favor of local Muslims.
More than 70 aid workers, including about 30 foreigners, were given police protection in the wake of the violence.
The offices of the UN refugee agency were among those attacked, according to state media.
The UN's Resident and Humanitarian Coordinator in Myanmar Toily Kurbanov said he was "deeply concerned" by the violence, adding that the organization was "determined" to continue operating in the region.
The US embassy in Yangon issued a statement condemning the "mob violence" and confirmed that at least three of its citizens were among the aid workers given "emergency relocation".
Long-standing animosity between Buddhists and Muslims in Rakhine erupted into bloodshed in 2012, leaving dozens dead in clashes and around 140,000 people displaced.
Buddhist flags have been hung across the city as part of protests against Muslims in the run-up to a nationwide census that many fear could further inflame the situation in Rakhine. AFP

Rights groups and government supporters both claim moral victory

The United Nations Human Rights Council has voted in favor of
conducting an international investigation into alleged war crimes
committed by both the Sri Lankan government and the Liberation Tigers of
Tamil Eelam (LTTE) during the final stages of the country’s decades
long civil war.
The US-backed resolution passed on Thursday with 23 votes in favor and 12 against. Neighboring India was among the 12 countries who abstained from voting.
The Sri Lankan government remains strongly opposed to an international investigation, while local and international rights groups welcomed the announcement that the resolution had passed.
"The UNHRC resolution offers hope to hundreds of victims who continuously demand truth and justice," said Father Emmanuel Sebamalai, a prominent Tamil Catholic activist who advocates for families of people who were forcibly disappeared during the war.
"Victims want to know what happened to their relatives, whether they are alive or not,” said Father Sebamalai. “Domestic probes failed to carry out credible investigations.”
The UN and US have also called on the Council to investigate more recent attacks on journalists, human rights defenders and religious minorities.
Earlier this month rights activist Balendran Jeyakumari and her 13-year-old daughter Balendran Vibooshika were arrested in Kilinochchi. Three days later, Ruki Fernando of the Inform Human Rights Documentation Center and Oblate Father Praveen Mahesan, director of the Center for Peace and Reconciliation, were also arrested in Kilinochchi when they visited to look into Jeyakumari’s case. After a wave of condemnation from foreign governments and rights groups, Fernando and Fr Mahesan were later released.
"In the last two weeks we have seen a severe crackdown on all forms of dissent,” Edward Mortimer, chair of the Sri Lanka Campaign for Peace and Justice, said in a statement. “Balendran Jeyakumari, and at least 10 others, remain in detention without access to their lawyers, and no evidence has been produced against them. Meanwhile Ruki Fernando and Fr Praveen Mahesan, the activists who were released last week, are still subjected to a gagging order and other forms of judicial harassment.
"It has been obvious for at least three years that only an independent international investigation can establish the truth about what happened in Sri Lanka in the last months of the civil war,” said Mortimer. "It is terrifying to think how much further the Sri Lankan authorities will go if the international community's attention moves on. They need to be told firmly that there will be real consequences if the crackdown continues."
The Sri Lankan government has repeatedly rejected calls for an independent, international investigation. Both the government and LTTE stand accused of a range of human rights violations committed during the war, which claimed the lives of at least 40,000 civilians in its final days alone, according to the United Nations.
Sri Lanka’s own probe – the Lessons Learnt and Reconciliation Commission – has cleared the military of all violations against civilians, saying that abuses by soldiers only occurred on an individual basis.
In Colombo, thousands of pro-government supporters, including Cabinet ministers and lawmakers, staged marches this week to protest against a possible UN resolution. Their argument appears to be that the resolution could somehow allow the now-defunct LTTE to reorganize their movement, despite the fact that their leadership was wiped out during the last days of the conflict.
"We were in darkness during the last three decades and we are now living a peaceful life and there are no sounds of bomb blasts in the cities," said Sujith Manawadu, a Sinhala businessman who helped organize the march.
"If the UN had allowed the LTTE to reorganize, there would have been another war soon," he said.
Sri Lanka External Affairs Minister GL Peiris said that in his interpretation, the outcome of the UN vote showed that many countries were against the resolution.
"The US has not gained the support of the Asian region, so the result doesn’t reflect the opinion of the entire world," he said in a press conference.
"We oppose [the] UN Human Rights Commissioner being given powers to conduct an investigation since she has no mandate," he said, referring to Navi Pillay, the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights.
"The adoption of the resolution against Sri Lanka could have far reaching effects,” said Chandrapala Kumarage, Human Rights Committee Chairman of the Bar Association of Sri Lanka.
Thematic working groups and special rapporteurs will need to visit the country to carry out “fact finding work” regarding enforced disappearances, extra judicial killing, independence of the judiciary, torture and more, said Kumarage.
"If the government does not cooperate in holding an international inquiry on matters contained in the resolution the Council will hold such an inquiry outside Sri Lanka," said Kumarage.
Keith Best director of UK-based human rights organization Freedom from Torture said the resolution “marks a crucial first step in holding the Sri Lankan authorities to account for the horrendous abuses that occurred in the final stages of the civil war.”
“It is imperative that the Sri Lankan government’s lack of political will to end impunity for both past and ongoing human rights violations is challenged by this investigation, and that they fully cooperate with it.”
