The Letters is an independently produced feature film based on the real-life letters Mother Teresa wrote to a longtime spiritual director over the years.
Written and directed by William C. Riead, film stars Juliet Stevenson of Bend It Like Beckham fame in the lead role of Mother Teresa.
The other iconic names are Max von Sydow who has shared screen presence with the likes of Ingrid Bergman, and Golden Globe award winner Rutger Hauer.
Another iconic name associated with the film is that of the DOP of the film, Jack Green, who has been Clint Eastwood's longtime cinematographer.
Apparently Mother Teresa used to slip out of her Cloister to help the poor people against the rules.
The film is said to be a labor of love and passion for William who sold his house to make this film.
"Working with William Riead and Jack Greene was an unbelievable experience and of course the hugely talented Juliet Stevenson was just such an honor!" shared Mahabanoo, who portrays the role of Mother General, in between shuttling continents.
She gushes about the professional and easy-going nature of the Hollywood directors vis-a-vis the scene at Bollywood where there's so much of secrecy regarding scripts and non-disclosure issues.
Interestingly her son Kaizaad Kotwal (of Inkaar fame) too has a role in the film.
He plays the Archbishop of Calcutta, Archbishop Perrier.
Sharing about how he landed the role Kaizaad said, "We auditioned in early 2012 and the shooting was done in Goa. William spoke to us over Skype and we were on!"
Among the other prominent names is Kolkata girl Tilottama Shome, who recently grabbed eyeballs with her performance in Q's Tasher Desh, who plays the role of Kavita.
Sharing details about her role Tilottama said, "I play this woman who is antagonistic toward this strange foreign lady and how a very human, intimate contact leads to a change of heart. For me the experience of working in this film goes beyond the filming. Having been a Kolkata girl I have grown up knowing about Mother Teresa.”
“What really made me think in this movie is how we live in our respective factions and groups, suspicious and antagonistic toward the 'other'. I like doing films that make me think. And the best part of working on Letters was its amazing international and Indian cast. Juliet Stevenson was a gift to watch," she added.
The film is shot mostly in Goa and at the Vatican.
Kolkata apparently missed the bus due to its infamous image of being chaotic and having issues over permits.
The outdoor shots of the city were taken and the indoors were replicated in Goa.

Gangte leaders informed that the process is on to enter in the Guinness Book of Record.
Addressing media persons at the Manipur Press Club on Friday, an elated L S Gangte, Chairman of the Gangte Christian Gospel Centenary Committee, Manipur said, “The achievement is significant not only for the Gangte community, but also for the whole state of Manipur.”
He added that it is a moment of joy and happiness for the community “as the record has been achieved on the soil of Manipur."
Determined to set a record, 7047 participants took part in the mass bible reading as part of the Gangte Gospel Centenary celebration on December 16, 2012 at Chiengkonpang in Churachandpur district of Manipur.
Braving the cold wintry breeze, participants read the entire book of Romans from Chapter 01-16, starting at 1:27pm. The reading concluded at 2:53pm, taking a duration of 1.27 hours.
The reading was witnessed by Maniram Sharma, Additional Deputy Commissioner of Churachandpur and L Mangkhogin Haokip, Superintendent of Police for Churachandpur.
A press note informed that it was organized with the aim to involve all participants who took part in the centenary celebration.
“The main aim of the mass Bible Reading was to spread the Gospel throughout the Seven Seas,” Rev K Mawia said.

இந்திய காலைநேர உணவு பழக்கம் குறித்து மும்பை, டில்லி, கோல்கட்டா, சென்னை ஆகிய 4 பெருநகரங்களில் ஆய்வு நடத்தப்பட்டது. 8 முதல் 40 வயது வரையிலான சுமார் 3600 பேரிடம் இந்த ஆய்வு நடத்தப்பட்டு, அவர்களின் உடலில் நிறைந்துள்ள சத்துக்களின் அளவு குறித்து ஆய்வு மேற்கொள்ளப்பட்டுள்ளது.

மும்பையில் 79 சதவீதம் மக்கள் போதிய சத்துக்கள் அற்ற உணவுகளை சாப்பிடுகின்றனர். டில்லியில் 76 சதவீதம் பேரும், கோல்கட்டாவில் 75 சதவீதம் பேரும் சத்துக்கள் இல்லாத உணவை சாப்பிடுகிறார்கள். சென்னையில் 60 சதவீதம் பேர் மட்டுமே போதிய சத்துக்கள் இல்லாத உணவை சாப்பிடுகிறார்களாம். மற்றவர்களை விட தென்னிந்திய கிராமப்புறங்களில் வாசிப்பவர்களின் உணவில் சத்துக்கள் அதிகமாக உள்ளது. அவர்கள் ராகியை அதிகம் பயன்படுத்துவதால் அதில் வைட்டமின் பி, நார்சத்து, புரோட்டீன், கால்சியம், இரும்புச் சத்து, பாஸ்பரஸ் ஆகிய சத்துக்கள் இருப்பதாக மெட்ராஸ் மருத்துவ கல்லூரியின் உணவு கட்டுப்பாட்டு நிபுணர் மீனாட்சி பஜாஜ் தெரிவித்துள்ளார். பிரபலமான இட்லி, சாம்பார் தான் அனைத்து சத்துக்களையும் உள்ளடக்கிய முழுமையான உணவு எனவும் மீனாட்சி தெரிவித்துள்ளார்.
இட்லியில் உள்ள அரிசி மற்றும் உளுந்தம் பருப்பு உணவில் முழுமையான சத்துக்களை அளிப்பதாக ஆய்வில் தெரிவிக்கப்பட்டுள்ளது. சாம்பாரில் உள்ள காய்கறிகள் மற்றும் பருப்பு சரிவிகித அளவில் சேர்க்கப்படுவதால் சத்துக்கள் அதிகம் கொண்டதாக உள்ளது. இந்தியாவில் நான்கில் ஒரு பங்கு மக்கள் காலை உணவை தவிர்கின்றனர். ஆனால் சென்னையில் காலை உணவை தவிர்ப்பவர்கள் மிகவும் குறைவு. சத்துக்கள் குறைவான உணவை சாப்பிடுபவர்களும் சென்னையில் குறைவு. சென்னையில் 50 சதவீதம் குடும்ப பெண்களும், 30 சதவீதம் வயதானவர்களும், 20 சதவீதம் வேலைக்கு செல்பவர்களும் காலை உணவாக ஆற்றல் தரும் பானங்களை மட்டுமே உட்கொள்கின்றனர்.

குழந்தைகளை பாலியல் பலாத்காரத்திற்கு உட்படுத்தி வந்த நபர் ஒருவரை பெங்களூர் பொலிசார் இன்று கைது செய்தனர். பெங்களூரைச் சேர்ந்த 30 வயது நபர் ஒருவர் 6 முதல் 10 வயது வரை உள்ள சிறுமிகளாக பார்த்து கடத்தி, பாலியல் பலாத்காரம் செய்து வந்தார்.
அவர் தொடர்ந்து பலாத்காரத்தில் ஈடுபட்ட அவர் மீது ஒரு பலாத்கார வழக்கு மட்டுமே பதிவு செய்யப்பட்டிருந்தது. மீதமுள்ளவை கடத்தல் வழக்குகளாக பதிவானது. அந்த நபர் சிறுமிகளை கடத்தி ஆள் நடமாட்டம் இல்லாத இடத்திற்கு கொண்டு சென்று பலாத்காரம் செய்து வந்துள்ளார். அதன் பிறகு சிறுமிகள் எப்படியோ வீட்டுக்கு வந்து சேர்ந்துள்ளனர்.
இந்நிலையில் அந்த நபரை பெங்களூர் பொலிசார் இன்று கைது செய்தனர். பொலிஸ் விசாரணையில் தான் 31 சிறுமிகளை கடத்தியதாக அவர் ஒப்புக் கொண்டுள்ளார். இது தவிர அவர் பைக்குகள், நகை, பணம் உள்ளிட்டவற்றை திருடியது, பலரை ஏமாற்றியது விசாரணையில் தெரியவந்துள்ளது. கடந்த 2 மாதங்களில் மட்டும் 16 சிறுமிகளை கடத்தியதாக அவர் மீது வழக்குப் பதிவு செய்யப்பட்டுள்ளது என்பது குறிப்பிடத்தக்கது.

In each case, the media moves into overdrive by capturing every frame and soundbite to maximize the sensational aspects of the crimes. As well, the vocal urban middle class gathers in public squares to express their collective outrage.
But the rapes of poor and lower caste women in remote villages go unreported or get buried in statistical records in the crimes bureau.
Instead of helping to manufacture outrage, the media needs to approach these appalling crimes with greater sensitivity, while focusing on the attackers rather than the victims. This will put more pressure on the legal system to function properly, while ensuring that victims and their families stay out of the public gaze so they can heal.
In the case of the Mumbai photojournalist, the media have targeted the survivor, her family and the families of the accused – thereby compounding their pain.
The photojournalist, who works for an English magazine, was gang raped at an abandoned textile factory in the city, where she had gone on assignment along with a colleague. Police arrested all five alleged attackers in less than a week.
The speed of the arrests is laudable, but the knee-jerk response to the attack by RR Patil, home minister of Maharashtra state, is not.
Patil has offered police protection to all women journalists, a move that implies that women need protection because authorities cannot prevent men from attacking them, or that men lack the capacity to view women as human beings rather than objects to be abused.
The myth that women require protection serves only to restrict their freedom and rob them of their confidence and opportunities.
Authorities have touted the updated Criminal Law (Amendment) Act 2013, but it cannot ensure that police will function efficiently or that the justice system will mete out speedy justice so that survivors of these brutal attacks can move on with their lives. And so, India remains unsafe for all females.
Greater pressure is needed to urge the government to introduce much-needed police reforms that have been in the pipeline for years. Police should not allow politicians to hamper their investigations or divert their attention from preventing crimes.
Various reports have shown that police patrolling is weak in crime-prone areas of Mumbai because nearly 28,000 of the city’s 49,000 police officers have been deployed for the protection of so-called ‘very important persons’, which translates as politicians and bureaucrats.
Also, the government urgently needs to appoint more judges to clear the backlog of cases in the courts and avoid lengthy trials. It is distressing to hear relatives of women who have lost their lives in attacks lament the time it takes to seek justice. They suffer more than the perpetrators, most of whom never get convicted.
The conviction rate countrywide for crimes against women is as low as 24.2 percent. Some 70 percent of rape-accused in jails are repeat offenders. These statistics show that crimes against women are not taken seriously in the country. When this is the message, there is hardly any deterrent for those who commit the crimes.
How can India change a deeply rooted mindset that views women as objects that are free for the taking by men? And given that society generally looks upon rape survivors as “damaged goods,” how do we help these victims overcome the fear or shame of reporting rape, incest and other forms of sexual abuse instead of remaining silent for the sake of family honor?
Men have been brought up to believe that they are a privileged class and therefore above women. Across class and caste, most boys are brought up like little kings surrounded by doting grandmothers, defensive mothers, subservient sisters and submissive wives. This instills in them notions of power, privilege and entitlement they have done nothing to deserve.
Change of the sort needed in India does not happen in a short span of months. Systems and mindsets must be altered. In the meantime, women will be forced to take responsibility for their own safety. They cannot allow the threat of violence to curb their mobility, their studies or their employment opportunities. Women must remain confident but prudent while enjoying their right to freedom.

As UN inspectors investigating Syria’s alleged use of chemical weapons meet with civilians affected by chemical agents during last Wednesday’s toxic gas attacks in the suburbs of the Syrian capital Damascus, Mgr. Audo called for “real dialogue between the parties in conflict” find a solution to this war that is sowing destruction and death.” He also said he hoped for an end to the fighting, so that “people will be free to move around, travel, communicate (and) work."
According to Caritas Syria’s president, everyone is saying the situation is worst in Aleppo. In Damascus it is apparently still possible to travel and use the airport to get to Lebanon, whereas in Aleppo you can’t move. Many have fled to the Syrian coast, where things are generally calmer.

Author Joseph Bottum says that while parts of his controversial article on Catholic responses to “gay marriage” may have been unclear, he did not intend to suggest a divergence from Church teaching.
“I'm not dissenting from Church doctrine here, in any way,” said Bottum, who wrote the essay “The Things We Share” in Commonweal last Friday.
Rather, he told CNA Aug. 26, “I am taking exception to some prudential judgment about the way in which we try and evangelize the world.”
In the more than 9,000 word essay, subtitled “A Catholic's Case for Same-Sex Marriage,” Bottum suggested that federal and state recognition of same-sex “marriage” is already so far advanced that Catholics would do well to not expend energy fighting it in judicial and legal spheres, but rather to evangelize and share the Christian world-view in other ways.
Bottum's essay was popularized by an interview which appeared in the New York Times by Mark Oppenheimer headlined “A Conservative Catholic now backs same-sex marriage.”
This characterization was the first introduction to the article for many, both on the political right and left.
“Much as I was grateful for the publicity” of the Times article, he said, “I think one of the problems with that was our conservative Catholic friends read the New York Times essay first, and then read the Commonweal piece, and it's effect was, 'Catholic deserter comes to our side.'”
“They look at it through the lens of 'Catholic deserter', and the first blog posts about it really blocked me into a position.”
Similarly, he said, that the left's first reaction, “based on the New York Times profile” was “'hooray, hooray, we've got a defector'; and then they actually read the essay, and now they're all out after me.”

While it looks less and less likely that China will agree to free elections in one of its territories, the debate in Hong Kong, Asia’s financial hub, has been getting more and more heated by the month. On the occasion of Hong Kong’s handover anniversary last 1 July, 430 thousand people marched through the city’s forest of sky-scrappers, in what was described as the biggest pro-democratic demonstration held in a decade.
But the greatest concern for the Chinese government and its allies in Hong Kong, is Occupy Central, a movement inspired by the Occupy Wall Street protest movement of 2011. Occupy Central was launched by a professor and a Protestant pastor and its aim is to paralyse the financial district in July next year, with a series of peaceful protests and acts of civil disobedience. The government runs the risk of the former colony’s image of stability and safety for business being compromised.
Unlike the rest of China, Hong Kong’s 7 million-strong population enjoys complete freedom of expression and religion and an independent judicial system. But its leaders – starting with the Chief Executive of Hong Kong who governs the former colony – are elected by a select number of voters, in a complex voting system which critics say was deliberately conceived to favour Beijing's allies. The opposition and the Occupy Central movement are asking the government to introduce a clearer voting process and allow universal suffrage so that the next Chief Executive can be elected in a more direct manner.
In a recent interview with Reuters, Cardinal Zen – who recently retired and has always been a critic of Beijing – said he was worried about potential infiltrations by pro-China protesters. Their aim is to provoke clashes, inciting the government to respond with force. "I'm worried we may finish with some violence ... Then they have the pretext to crush everything," the 81-year old prelate said.

Bishops from different dioceses will be celebrating Masses at churches during this period culminating with celebrating the feast on September 8.
The religious program will start with hoisting of the flag followed by novena and Mass. Thereafter, daily novenas and masses will be held at various churches in the city.
A huge pandal accommodating around 5,000 faithful will be erected near the 135-year-old St. Ignatius Church in Khadki for the novena and the feast.
During the novena, Masses will be said for the sick, children, youth, couples, families, senior citizens, teachers, professionals and others on different days.
There would be many stalls of religious books and the Legion of Mary alongside the church.
The church would accept special offerings in cash and kind for the poor. Food grains, oil and pulses can be offered daily during the offertory of the mass.

The registers, which date back to the 1840s, not only have immense archival value but also have sentimental value for the present-day Scots as many of them have their ancestors or close relatives buried there.
“It’s an important restoration work. They carry crucial records on Scots who lived in India but the registers were in a bad shape due to age of the papers,” GM Kapur, convenor of West Bengal and Calcutta regional chapter of Indian National Trust for Art and Cultural Heritage (INTACH), which restored the registers, said.
The registers have detailed records of the number of the grave, date and place of birth of the deceased, date and hour of death, profession and address as well as the cause of death.
There are about 1,800 graves in the cemetery.
The first entry in the oldest register is of Ann Emily Shaw, a 16-month-old baby and resident of Creek Row, who died of cholera on November 8, 1840.
The second entry is of Donald MacLeod, who served as medical inspector general of Her Majesty’s Hospital in India and resided at 22, Theatre Street.
Born in the Isle of Skye in Scotland, MacLeod died in Kolkata on November 12, 1840, at the age of 65.
Established in 1826, the cemetery at Park Circus is the only Scottish cemetery in Kolkata and considered by many Scots as ‘a piece of Scotland in Kolkata’.
Presently, the cemetery is under the maintenance of St. Andrew’s Church, the only Scottish church in the city.
Kolkata Scottish Heritage Trust, a UK-based organization, took up an initiative in 2008 to restore and preserve Scottish heritages in Kolkata.
Located in a congested area south of AJC Bose (Lower Circular) Road at 3 Karaya Road, Kolkata 700014, it covers an area of six acres and contains approximately 1,800 graves.
Their appeal was heard and the Scottish Cemetery was finally opened in 1826 and expanded over the years. It is now full, no longer in use and over the years has fallen into decay.
The Scots had come to Kolkata mainly as administrators in the East India Company but later moved on to running the jute and tea businesses.

Father K. J. Thomas, rector of St. Peter's seminary, died "due to shock and hemorrhage as a result of blunt injuries to the chest" he sustained, said the post mortem report.
The report shows that the priest suffered fracture on ten ribs, five on each side. Both the lungs were punctured and collapsed as a result of the wounds inflicted, the report said.
Other injuries include a fracture of the skull bone, nasal bone, a punctured wound on the right side of the mouth and an inward fracture of the spine at the level of the third vertebra.
"It clearly shows that he was beaten to death with a crude object," a family member said adding that police had recovered a bloodstained iron bar from the place of attack.
Multiple bruises were present on the back of right and left side of the chest. The report also says that there were many open wounds present on the left fore arm, outer aspect of right thigh and back of the left knee.
There was evidence of lacerations on forehead, left eye, nose, right side of upper lip, inner aspect of lower lip and scalp.
Four months after the incident, the police are yet to make any arrest in connection with the incident. The priest's body was found in a pool of blood just out side his bedroom on April 1.
The police have some clues. "A lot of clues in fact, but we cannot build up a story on them, unless we have solid proof which will stand in a court of law," a senior police official told ucanews.com Aug. 27.
The police could not establish the motive behind the murder. In July they subjected a priest, who lived next door to the victim, to a nacro test-- a form of questioning where the subject is placed into a chemically induced hypnotic state.
"It is a highly complicated case…we cannot establish a motive behind it. I have never come across such a case in my professional life," said an officer investigating the case.
